Confirmed Board Election Candidates edit

Hi everyone,

The 2021 Board of Trustees election opens 4 August 2021. Candidates from the community were asked to submit their candidacy. After a three week long call for candidates, there are 20 candidates for the 2021 election.

The Wikimedia movement has the opportunity to vote for the selection of community-and-affiliate trustees. The Board is expected to select the four most voted candidates to serve as trustees. Voting closes 17 August 2021.

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees oversees the Wikimedia Foundation's operations. The Board wants to improve their competences and diversity as a team. They have shared the areas of expertise that they are currently missing and hope to cover with new trustees.

Pages with template loops edit

The problem appears to have been vandalism to the underlying {{Str ≤ len}} template, which was been reverted and protected. Although {{Italic title}} now appears to work correctly, it will take a while for the maintenance category to refresh. ~ Ningauble (talk) 23:29, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This time it was vandalism to the underlying {{Str len/core}} template, which was been reverted (same vandal) and protected. Hint: When inexplicable template failures occur, check recent changes in the Template namespace for changes to related templates. Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee edit

Movement Strategy announces the Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee. The Call opens August 2, 2021 and closes September 1, 2021.

This Committee will have around 15 members. It is expected to represent diversity in the Movement. Diversity includes gender, language, geography, and experience. This comprises participation in projects, affiliates, and the Wikimedia Foundation. You can read the full announcement here.

Board Elections Postponed Until August 18th edit

Hello, all.

As you know, the Board election was due to open on August 4th. Due to some technical issues with SecurePoll, the election must be delayed by two weeks. This means we plan to launch the election on August 18th, which is the day after Wikimania concludes.

Universal Code of Conduct - Enforcement draft guidelines review edit

The Universal Code of Conduct Phase 2 drafting committee would like comments about the enforcement draft guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period is planned for 17 August 2021 through 17 October 2021.

These guidelines are not final but you can help move the progress forward. The committee will revise the guidelines based upon community input.

Comments can be shared in any language on the draft review talk page and multiple other venues. Community members are encouraged to organize conversations in their communities.

Template:Citation - disrupted? edit

Hi, I was looking for citation templates to use within Wikiquote, and I came across this: Template:Citation. This page is confusing -- the content does not seem to match the title. The lemma looks italicized mistakenly, a certain article is shown but oddly its article name isn't detected through search. Weird. Can anyone have a clue? Japanese poets or Risto hot sir created articles edit

Hello, I'd like to ask you guys opinions how to deal with those articles in Japanese poets created by Risto hot sir who is now globally banned as cross wiki abuser. After giving a look to one third of those articles, I think I've got clues enough share with other editors for further considerations. Hope the below works food of thought of you.

At this moment my overview is "some should survive and be expanded, if they are no copyright infringement. The other might not be hoaxed but too obscure for us to expand and thus it is dubious if we would like them to keep as quotable quotes". Let me explain my concerns further:

Sorry for first, my response has come very late, which was raised in 2018 on my talk, as copied as below 

Risto hot sir has requested that I ask the community about what should be done regarding the numerous articles listed under Category:Japanese poets. You will know what I mean after you read a few and start to see the trend. They are all a possible copyright violation, they are all of non-notable people who don't even have a Wikipedia article, they are all from one source and they all clog up this category. Scanning about ten of them, I tend to agree with JARNY but there are some differences between us, let us follow his standpoints,

  • "They are all a possible copyright violation": they could be so, specially "quotes about THE AUTHOR" smell not nicely.
  • "they are all of non-notable people who don't even have a Wikipedia article": we say happily no. Not only some of them are notable, but also some of them have their own Wikipedia articles, not only on Japanese Wikipedia, but also on English Wikipedia (e.g. Fukuda Chiyo-ni, she is actually a notable female poet, whose article had been on ENWP before the ENWQ article was created).
  • "they are all from one source": It is a concern indeed, specially in the circumstance we don't know how much amount of the original the cited quotes are taken. I am personally optimistic, but having no copy of the cited book, we cannot determine they are permissible as fair use.
  • "and they all clog up this category.": again a contend based concern, not legal one. We could relax here ... and here I strongly concur with JARNY. Even at this moment, with ten reviewed articles, I found only one genuine poets (whose main notability stands on their poetry), Fukuda Chiyo-ni among their creations. Others are, even if they are somehow notable, known as of their different occupations, and might recite poems occasionally. We have no clues if those lines are just a part of their enormous poetical works or one and all known their poetry in their entire lives. Since death poems were a century-long tradition in Japan, reciting a notable death poem doesn't mean they were known as poets. For example, imagine a a WW2 field general left a death poem and these verse has been notable, but it isn't same he regularly made poetry, nor he has been considered as a poet and military personnel, not mere a serviceman.

I tend to like keep some "notable" authors' articles though, still copyvio possibilities are concerns. Also on some minor authors. Some of those Japanese haven't been found in reliable sources like Japan National Diet Library Database, "Web authorities", which means they might have left no writings in Japanese. They seems not to be hoaxes, as cited quotes, but I think we should take this possibility into account: creating a hoax mixed with real genuine material is a well known modus operandi, and I have known some young and immature editors had done so even from their good will across Wikimedia project.

Risto hot sir's creation is not limited to Japanese poets, and I hope we will be able to build a paradigm, or if the community has known such already, please let me share :) Cheers, --Aphaia (talk) 08:40, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The 2022 Community Wishlist Survey will happen in January edit

Hello everyone,

We hope all of you are as well and safe as possible during these trying times! We wanted to share some news about a change to the Community Wishlist Survey 2022. We would like to hear your opinions as well.

Summary:

We will be running the Community Wishlist Survey 2022 in January 2022. We need more time to work on the 2021 wishes. We also need time to prepare some changes to the Wishlist 2022. In the meantime, you can use a dedicated sandbox to leave early ideas for the 2022 wishes.

Proposing and wish-fulfillment will happen during the same year edit

In the past, the Community Tech team has run the Community Wishlist Survey for the following year in November of the prior year. For example, we ran the Wishlist for 2021 in November 2020. That worked well a few years ago. At that time, we used to start working on the Wishlist soon after the results of the voting were published.

However, in 2021, there was a delay between the voting and the time when we could start working on the new wishes. Until July 2021, we were working on wishes from the Wishlist for 2020.

We hope having the Wishlist 2022 in January 2022 will be more intuitive. This will also give us time to fulfill more wishes from the 2021 Wishlist.

Encouraging wider participation from historically excluded communities edit

We are thinking how to make the Wishlist easier to participate in. We want to support more translations, and encourage under-resourced communities to be more active. We would like to have some time to make these changes.

A new space to talk to us about priorities and wishes not granted yet edit

We will have gone 365 days without a Wishlist. We encourage you to approach us. We hope to hear from you in the talk page, but we also hope to see you at our bi-monthly Talk to Us meetings! These will be hosted at two different times friendly to time zones around the globe.

We will begin our first meeting September 15th at 23:00 UTC. More details about the agenda and format coming soon!

Brainstorm and draft proposals before the proposal phase edit

If you have early ideas for wishes, you can use the new Community Wishlist Survey sandbox. This way, you will not forget about these before January 2022. You will be able to come back and refine your ideas. Remember, edits in the sandbox don't count as wishes!

I would say the first thing that needs to change is WMF must start to listening to the feedback it gets from audiences in those "excluded communities". This posting is a perfect example: I have been trying to engage in conversation about the wishlist here at the wikiquote village pump for a long time (you'll have to check the view history link), but it seems that WMF employees do not participate in discussion here. Re: Encouraging wider participation from historically excluded communities:
Wikiquote is one of those "historically excluded communities" where the wishlist survey is concerned. I will venture a guess that the majority of users who participate in building quote articles on WQ have never even heard the term wishlist survey, and if they did they don't know anything about it: what is its purpose, how does it work or whether they truly have a say in any of the hundreds of proposals it handles.
In my opinion, if the WMF was truly interested in feedback from "excluded communities" they would provide a better feedback link than the one offered currently which shoots users into a VERY poorly attended talkpage on META, where the participants are obviously already familiar with the topic and are merely busy offering tweaks to an old established project. How about providing a page for wikiquote users to discuss the ideas they have for possible improvements to the wmf-software? Preferably a talkpage that is newbie-friendly.   2. "If the WMF was truly interested in feedback..." - I understand the problem you raise. Please bear in mind that you're talking to one team out of many in the WMF. So given our capacities, we are only able to organize a centralized Community Wishlist Survey and watch selected pages. It's impossible for us to commit to participation in concurrent discussions on many pages on many wikis. This is why we're inviting volunteers to promote the Community Wishlist Survey in their communities wherever they deem appropriate. Also, setting up a page here with basic information about the CWS and redirecting to Meta is an option. What do you think?

2021 Wikimedia Board of Trustees Election Result edit

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2021 Board election. The Elections Committee has reviewed the votes of the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election, organized to select four new trustees. A record 6,873 people from across 214 projects cast their valid votes. The following four candidates received the most support:

While these candidates have been ranked through the community vote, they are not yet appointed to the Board of Trustees. They still need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. The Board has set a tentative date to appoint new trustees at the end of this month.

I have a question in regards to Archive:Board of Trustees/Restructure Announcement Q&A (a link I followed from the bottom of the section Current members on the Meta page you provided): I was not aware until today that the board of trustees was restructured in 2008. Is there a page somewhere on a wmf-wiki or an independent news-article that explains why and how the board was restructured in 2008? Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee ending 14 September 2021 edit

Movement Strategy announces the Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee. The Call opens August 2, 2021 and closes September 14, 2021.

The Committee is expected to represent diversity in the Movement. Diversity includes gender, language, geography, and experience. This comprises participation in projects, affiliates, and the Wikimedia Foundation.

English fluency is not required to become a member. If needed, translation and interpretation support is provided. Members will receive an allowance to offset participation costs. It is US$100 every two months.

We are looking for people who have some of the following skills:

  • Know how to write collaboratively. (demonstrated experience is a plus)
  • Are ready to find compromises.
  • Focus on inclusion and diversity.
  • Have knowledge of community consultations.
  • Have intercultural communication experience.
  • Have governance or organization experience in non-profits or communities.
  • Have experience negotiating with different parties.

The Committee is expected to start with 15 people. If there are 20 or more candidates, a mixed election and selection process will happen. If there are 19 or fewer candidates, then the process of selection without election takes place.

Server switch edit

The Wikimedia Foundation tests the switch between its first and secondary data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology department needs to do a planned test. This test will show if they can reliably switch from one data centre to the other. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.

They will switch all traffic back to the primary data center on Tuesday, 14 September 2021.

Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.

You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.

  • You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Tuesday, 14 September 2021. The test will start at 14:00 UTC (07:00 PDT, 10:00 EDT, 15:00 WEST/BST, 16:00 CEST, 19:30 IST, 23:00 JST, and in New Zealand at 02:00 NZST on Wednesday, 15 September).
  • If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.

Other effects:

  • Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
  • We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.
This project may be postponed if necessary. You can read the schedule at wikitech.wikimedia.org. Any changes will be announced in the schedule. There will be more notifications about this. A banner will be displayed on all wikis 30 minutes before this operation happens. Please share this information with your community.

Announcement of Major Resource for Quotation-Checking edit

I hope I will be forgiven a "shameless plug" that should be significantly helpful to Wikiquote participants. My book, The New Yale Book of Quotations, has just been published by Yale University Press. This is, at the least, a quotation resource on a par with the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations and Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, and it arguably surpasses those books in accuracy and thoroughness. Extensive dialogue from television series edit

I'm not sure if Jonas (TV series) fits the requirements for Wikiquote, it seems to me unlikely that this amount of dialogue is "quotable" in the usual sense, though doubtless there exist fans who can recite the entire series by heart. Movement Charter Drafting Committee - Community Elections to take place October 11 - 24 edit

This is a short message with an update from the Movement Charter process. The call for candidates for the Drafting Committee closed September 14, and we got a diverse range of candidates. The committee will consist of 15 members, and those will be (s)elected via three different ways.

The 15 member committee will be selected with a 3-step process:

  • Election process for project communities to elect 7 members of the committee.
  • Selection process for affiliates to select 6 members of the committee.
  • Wikimedia Foundation process to appoint 2 members of the committee.

The community elections will take place between October 11 and October 24. The other process will take place in parallel, so that all processes will be concluded by November 1.

We are very happy about the wide range of diverse Wikimedians that are running for the election and selection processes for the drafting committee of the Movement Charter! As the number of candidates is quite large and thus informing yourself about them might be a bit more complicated, we want to try something different this time: We want to organize a so-called “Voting Advice Application (or “Election Compass) with statements related to the Movement Charter. All candidates can propose their statements here.

Thanks for bringing it up. Recognized prod contested, so it failed. On the other hand, on your concerns on self-promotion it falls on our speedy deletion categories (WQ:SD#Articles 4. "Unremarkable subject"). So I'm about to speedy it. I really know nothing of Wikiquote policies, but this page seems off to me. I came here looking for a range of views on the existence of extra-terrestrial life. Even amongst Scientists there is no agreement so I was expecting differing views. I was also expecting some fringe views, but I feel that they have disproportionate representation on this page. Appendices? edit

I was just wondering if WQ has an appendix namespace/feature like Wiktionary does? I just started the passport page, and one of the versions of the US passport has a quote per page on most of the pages. It doesn't really fit in that theme article since the quotes aren't about passports, merely contained in one; but it feels like they should be collected in one place (even if they are also osmoted to relevant theme and author pages where appropriate). I thought they were of interest to the project for two reasons: they are in an official government document, and those usually tend to not be so literary-minded; and some of them are abbreviated in a way that changes their context and therefore meaning. We are free to give a fuller context here (I'll note that some are from PD sources due to age, and others copyrighted ones, but none need be so long that we would be leaning on the limits of fair use as are commonly observed in the project). A few years ago I started a count of how many quotes the passport had at User:Arlo Barnes/Passport, but the edit that added sourcing was lost and would need to be redone in preparation for making the page -- if there is indeed a place for it. As a federal document, it should be PD; so scanning it, redacting the parts I wouldn't want known to the world (:P) and uploading to Commons, then starting a transcription project at en-WS seems like a good idea; but that still leaves listing the 'expanded' quotes somewhere. Alleged quotation by Philippe_Pétain edit

There's a bit of a mystery surrounding this alleged quotation by Philippe Pétain, former WWI hero and leader of Vichy France, while in enforced exile at Sigmaringen:

I am and remain morally your leader.
    Je suis et demeure moralement votre chef.

This quotation is not currently in Wikiquote, which is probably for the best (but could start out in a 'possibly misattributed' section).

Four articles at en-wiki (and a few at fr-wiki) contain this alleged quotation by Pétain. It has been present at fr-wiki since an IP added it without a source in 2006; since then, it spread to four articles at en-wiki (by me; self-reverted for lack of verifiability). Three published books in French contain the quotation; none came out before 2018, and some have language very close to the 2006 fr-wiki article. If authentic, this would be a striking quotation by Pétain that should be added to Wikiquote, but I'm still searching for a solid citation to it. Regarding the vast length of discussion pages edit

While looking at a Wikiquote discussion page for the first time (for I didn't use it prior) I found that discussion pages are long. Very long. The page in question had 90 different sections and was much too long to read, and the same issue has appeared on many other discussion pages. Are you suggesting that old discussions should be removed and forgotten? The problem as I see it with the current archiving mechanism for wiki-text talkpages is that once a topic is archived few are aware of it, and newcomers keep re-inventing the same wheel over and over.

Closing the comment period for the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Draft Guidelines edit

Thank you for your continued comments and ideas on the Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines. Your responses have helped to build a stronger Universal Code of Conduct.

If you have not already provided your comments, now is the time as the drafting committee has been meeting to update the enforcement guidelines. The drafting committee wants to consider all comments as they make their updates. Please submit any comments by the end of November. The Committee hopes to finish its revisions before the end of the year, and the revised guidelines will be published as soon as they have been completed.

The next steps for the Universal Code of Conduct include conversations about ratification of the enforcement guidelines. There will be a conversation about ratification on Nov 29.

The Wikimedia Foundation will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees about the ratification of the guidelines in December. The recommendations will inform the next steps in the Universal Code of Conduct process.

Hey, my apologies, I'm answering a bit later than originally planned. I've been busy preparing for the Community Wishlist Survey. There's a lot to do before the holidays. I'm pretty sure I've put such info on wiki and wanted to copy and paste it but unfortunately, I don't see that edit anywhere in my global contributions :/ So again:
  1. One person asked if it was possible to extend the timeline to 4-6 weeks per phase. The team decided not to make such a huge change this year but we will continue improving our communication during the Survey.
  2. One person asked if it was possible for our team to grow and do more. Well, it's not up to us to make such a decision. Also, some projects that are originally submitted as wishes end up on other teams' plates.
  3. One person asked if we could prioritize projects aligned with the Wikimedia 2030 strategy explicitly. We answered that the Survey is part of the medium-term plan, and plans of a large scale may be explicitly aligned with the movement strategy. The Survey is aligned implicitly.
  4. We asked if we should make two leaderboards, one for projects within the scope of the Community Tech team, and one for project out of the scope. We wanted not to mark good proposals, which could be worked on by other teams, as "declined". The attendees were not quite convinced. After the meeting, the team decided to look for a middle ground.
  5. The attendees were also asking if the senior staff (leaders) are aware of/inspired by the results of the Survey. We answered that yes, we inform them about the results.

Unsourced articles in other languages edit

Wikiquote is a tremendous resource well above others, not only because it is community-based, but because it is sourced.

To my surprise this does not seem to apply to Wikiquote in other languages. By spot checks some languages like Swedish and Spanish seem mostly sourced, while e.g. Chinese seems largely unsourced.

Shouldn't there be a drive to raise the quality level of all language versions of Wikiquote?

Why the SheSaid campaign edit

To balance the representation of gender in the entries of Wikiquote.
To illustrate the situation, here are a few interesting figures

  • On the English Wikiquote main page on 6th of Oct 2020, in the Selected people section... 29 men are featured and only 4 women (check out the screenshot on the right...)
  • There are 233 women who have a featured article on either French or English Wikipedias... with no entry on the French Wikiquote check it out
  • There are 141 women featured article on the English Wikipedia with no wikiquote entry check it
  • There are 519 women listed on the French wikiquote check it and 3117 men listed check it out

I happened to notice that one of the WQuotians who is a wikignome on this project has been globally blocked by a Steward (I think?). User: Kotkan lusija has provided tremendous help durig the campaign that added hundreds of articles about women to Wikiquote.

Article deleted (I think), and I can't find any information why. edit

I stumbled upon this when I was bored and reading a piece by the Washington Post. The Wikipedia article was deleted, supposedly because Wikiquote already had an article duplicating the content, so a redirect was set up. When the redirect was set up, I clearly remember the Wikiquote article existing (and the redirect redirecting to the article), and I think it probably would've been deleted by the person who helped me with it if the Wikiquote article didn't exist. Later, I wanted to check it out, and I couldn't find any proof of the Wikiquote page's existence; there was nothing on the talk page, the article didn't exist and I couldn't find anything on archive.org.

Sorry if I sound insane/strange; I'm just kind of annoyed at either my memory or whatever caused the page to be deleted without any logs and without any other clearly visible traces. I clearly remember the page existing, and there's an English Wikipedia redirect edited by an experienced user that I assume would've deleted it if it were broken.

So what happened to that page? Or is it just my memory?

Dividing pages for vital articles into as many other smaller more specialized pages as possible. edit

Most of the pages for wars use both idiosyncratic and chronological sections, which makes them resemble chapters of a history textbook more than they do any of the other Wikiquote pages, with the exceptions of Christianity and Covid-19. Would it be appropriate to add cleanup tags to that many vital articles, and if so, given how large and emotionally charged these topics all are, shouldn't we form some kind of task force to deal with this in a timely manner that avoids bias?
I'm also concerned that if the pages become too specific we will end up with a hundred pages for X historical event in Y country, but with a bunch of empty container pages for the actual historical events, which is not how any other collection of quotations is organized. Has anyone ever actually seen another collection of quotations with a section specifically for the Race and appearance of Jesus, or Racial policy of Nazi Germany, because if not, than maybe there's a reason they don't break down all their topics into particles. Upcoming Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections edit

The Wikimedia Board of Trustees is preparing a call for feedback about the upcoming Board Elections, from January 7 - February 10, 2022.

While details will be finalized the week before the call, we have confirmed at least two questions that will be asked during this call for feedback:

  • What is the best way to ensure fair representation of emerging communities among the Board?
  • What involvement should candidates have during the election?

While additional questions may be added, the Movement Strategy and Governance team wants to provide time for community members and affiliates to consider and prepare ideas on the above confirmed questions before the call opens. How are disagreement about content handled on WQ? edit

Earlier today I undid an edit by another Wikiquotian on an established content page and, as is my habit, I used an edit summary to try and explain why. On enwiki editors are encouraged to take disagreements to the article's talkpage, but I guess on WQ such discussions are handled on user talkpages, I think? Is this the most optimal way of resolving disagreements? I personally would rather not clutter my user talkpage with long content discussions for several reasons.

My thoughts on this are first that such discussion can certainly take place on the article's talkpage - so that others that look at that page can follow (or add to) the discussion. That being said, I also do not find an issue with having it at the user talkpage either - sometimes the other party wants to ensure that their comments won't be missed and prefers to address the other directly. In the end, I do not endorse any hard or fast rule about this. I would also comment that the original edit could have also been handled through the article talkpage - rather than simply remove the links as you did, perhaps you could have asked the question on the talkpage first and asked for some reasoning for their inclusion in the first place. One route which takes me to a variety of Wikis, including "foreign" ones, is:
(1) When I click on a photo on a Wiki page, there's a blue "More Details" button at the bottom of the photo page;
(2) Clicking that blue button leads me to (amid other information) a section "File usage on other wikis" showing where else on Wikis the photo has already been used;
(3) Sometimes I click onto links for some/all the "other wikis" listed there, to see how a photo has been used in a Wiki. This takes me into a random "foreign Wiki" of some type.
I suggest, someone needs to identify how character sets are being changed across Wikis, and whether the root cause is due to a formatting glitch or actual vandalism. Can this be brought to the attention of a relevant administrative body dealing with Wikis generally? (I suspect they may already be aware of the problem.)
