Pages without quotations

Why are you creating Wikiquote pages that don't have any quotes? Unless these pages include notable quotations, they will end up getting deleted. - InvisibleSun 23:18, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

In fact, I've just nominated Ghost in the shell SAC, Adventures of Chico & Guapo, The, Wonder Showzen, Kyle XY and Kappa Mikey for deletion at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion because they contain no quotes. If you (or someone else) do not add quotes to those pages, it is very likely they will be deleted. —LrdChaos 23:41, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Now that you have added some quotes, these pages will likely survive the vfd process, but until a vote has ended, the vfd tag must remain on the page. I've restored the tags to these pages. Again, I don't expect that these pages will end up being deleted, due to the addition of quotes, but plese let the voting process complete. One not, the quotes you've added help, but the formatting of them is a bit off. I've corrected the formatting on Ghost in the shell SAC, as well as moving it to its full title. The best way to avoid having articles nominated for deletion because of no quotes is, of course, to compile some quotes before you create the article. Empty articles usually get deleted, so their creators get no credit in the edit history for having created them. (Furthermore, there is a stigma attached to those users who create quoteless articles that is easily avoided by doing even a little homework before starting a page.) You get a better reputation as a Wikimedia editor by making an article substantive than you do by creating a stub article. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 15:03, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Just Added Quotes

Hey i just added quotes to Kappa Mikey, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Wonder Showzen, Adventures Of Chico and Guapo, and Kyle XY. They were left with no quotes because i was trying to find them. Wait a little while before you add something to deletion. In the future, you should probably hold off on creating a page until you have at least one quote to put on it. Since this is Wikiquote, the whole point of this wiki is quotes, and a page without quotes is useless. I nominated all of those pages for deletion since we're not in the business of duplicating info found in Wikipedia (the intro) without adding something of our own (the quotes). —LrdChaos 21:41, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Request for adminship

Paranoid1, I see that you have requested adminship at Wikiquote. I'm afraid I don't understand why you are requesting this. I notice that you have a chronologically long history with Wikiquote, although you have yet to achieve 500 edits. (At the moment, I see 355 edits, and many of those appear to be minor edits to correct problems that you didn't appear to notice before saving your edits. Do you use "Show Preview" to check the results of your edits before committing them to the database?)

I'm encouraged to see that your activity is on an upward trend. However, I think it is a bit premature to be requesting adminship. Besides your relatively low edit count and less-than-optimal editing practices, you don't seem to exhibit any of the characteristics that I, at least, look for in a sysop:

• Awareness of Wikiquote policies and practices, especially style practices in the genres you contribute most to.
• Participation in a wide variety of articles, not just a few articles in a single genre.
• Participation in Wikiquote community and policy discussions (not just asking questions, but providing answers, too).
• General unprivileged administrative tasks like recent-change monitoring, vandalism reversion, new-user welcoming, general article cleanup (like adding intros, IMDb links, categories), etc.

Although admin privileges are "no big deal", they do put a responsibility on the holder of those privileges. Also, they are not usually given unless the editor wishes to do something that they can't already do without them. I'm not sure what you expect to be able to do as an admin that you can't already do. Oh ok nah it's cool. I was just suggesting it, in case you guys need any help. I really love the site so I like to help as much as possible but yeah I was just merely throwing it out there. I know I'm not the best choice for it and was just wondering if you need any help. Thanks for the answer back. I'll get back to adding some more quotes now hehe. We can always use help. But you don't need to be an admin to help out. Almost none of the maintenance, assistance, and community participation activities require admin privileges. Some examples of what all editors can do to help out:

• Click on "Random page" (in the left-margin "navigation" box) and consider improving the article by adding missing items like proper introductory paragraphs, Wikipedia links, or categories; checking an existing source to verify the information; doing a Google or other search on an unsourced quote to find a reliable source for it; and/or reformat the article to meet the style guidelines listed at Wikiquote:Templates and its genre subpages. Besides helping out, it can be entertaining just reading random pages.

• Click on "Recent changes" (also in the "navigation" box), then click on the "diff" links to see what edits people have made. Most will have some kind of sense to them, but some of them will be accidents or experiments, and some of them will be prank edits or even vandalism. You can revert the mistakes and pranks by editing the older version of the article and saving it over top of the newer version. (Be sure to put something like "reverted to previous version" in the edit summary if you do this. And always try to assume good faith; i.e., try not to accuse others of bad-faith editing without substantial evidence.)

• Nominate articles for deletion if they don't seem to be about famous people or works. Likewise, you can vote for or against such nominations that others make. (It's good to read Wikiquote:Wikiquote, WQ:NOT, and the top of Wikiquote:Votes for deletion before doing this, though.)

• Join in discussions on article talk pages or community pages like Wikiquote:Village pump and Wikiquote:Reference desk. There are no foolish questions, and you never know when you might raise an issue that no one has seriously considered before.

These are just a few things that not only help the community, but also provide opportunities to get comfortable with Wikiquote practices and policies and get to know your fellow Wikiquotians. And anyone can do them, at any time. Moreover, you can do that at your own pace, as much or as little as you wish. (Believe me, not being an admin makes this much easier, at least if you're as responsibility-obsessed as I am. ☺) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:07, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Simple links

I've responded to your excellent village pump question about recovering old information, but I also noticed that the article link you used was more complex than necessary:

[[The_Boondocks_%28TV_series%29]] → The_Boondocks_(TV_series)

I assume you got this by copying part of the URL of the page. Might I suggest a simpler form that makes such links much more readable to editors?

[[The Boondocks (TV series)]] → The Boondocks (TV series)

Notice that this version uses the punctuation and spaces of the actual article title. (It also works for section headings.) Both versions work, but the latter is much easier to understand and less likely to incur an editing error that breaks it. There are occasions where the %nn and underscore encoding is needed, but they are rare, and should only be used when the standard links don't work. (One should always test links in any text one writes, either for articles or discussion pages, before saving, by using the "Show preview" feature of the edit window. I apologize if you already do this, but unfortunately, it is all too common, even among experienced wikians, to forget this essential editing step.)

The "how to edit a page" link mentioned in the welcome message above gives quite a bit of details and examples of some of these useful editing tricks. I highly recommend reading it and then experimenting with edits (using Wikiquote:Sandbox) to get a feel for some of these cool wiki capabilities. (I still remember how excited I got about the possibilites while reading this material when I first was learning about Wikipedia, but then I'm an incurable computer nerd. ☺) Anyway, I hope you find this info helpful. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 17:44, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
