Myst

edit

Hi, I saw that you flagged Myst for a review of its copyright status. I edited it down to seven quotes. Is this sufficient to remove the copyright tag? – 193.157.200.9 11:37, 14 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Massive Edit

edit

I have a spell checked and reorganized version of the Lil Wayne article ready to replace the old, unorganized, vandalized version. Is there any way I can make sure it is not put back to the older version? Thank you,Deezy D 16:53, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

If there is a problem with ongoing vandalism in progress then the page can be protected temporarily. We do not generally lock down a preferred version of an article, because someone may come along and make it even better. The best thing to do with vandalism is to fix it and forget about it. If it keeps happening then drop a note at WQ:VIP. ~ Ningauble 17:43, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

How do I temporarily protect the article?Deezy D 18:06, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Only an administrator can do that for you. You can drop a note at WQ:VIP if it keeps happening. ~ Ningauble 20:55, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I know I have been a trouble maker in the past but if you look at all my edits so far you will notice most of them are actually really good like how I did a massive remodel on the Lil Wayne article or the articles I've created and updated constantly such as Pimp C,Bun B,Ludacris,Anthony Hamilton,Eazy E,Bushwick Bill,Willie D,Z-Ro, and T-Pain. So I was hoping you would support my effort to become one of few teenage Administrators. Thanks a million Deezy D 17:13, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello

edit

Hello, my name is David as you could guess from my user name I was told by my friend I go to school with that to get a good reputation on here as a person who does not vandalize and do useless edits to become friends or at least get to know and become friendly with the adminstrators. I have hope to become an adminstrator one day to so it couldn't hurt to try to become friends now. David.Green 15:28, 9 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

He's been demanding me to accept his apology, but all he's doing is harrassing me, and he even tried to attack another user (who was trying to protect me) with severe language. Can't something be done to stop him? WikiLubber 19:20, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re: Deletion summaries

edit

As I cannot edit the reason of deletion, I just temporarily undeleted Category:Disney animated films and Category:DreamWorks Animation films and re-deleted them with the reason as Wikiquote:Votes_for_deletion/Animation_films_by_studio_categories per your suggestion on 8 February 2012. Thanks.--Jusjih 11:12, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest just moving those VfD tips to the project page containing VfD instructions. BD2412 T 17:30, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Jusjih. I did the same sort of thing a while back to clean up old summaries.[1]
@ BD2412: I think it is too long to include at WQ:VFD, but I will add a link there. The "essay" would probably need more work to be suitable for project space because, as indicated in the lede, there is more than one way to handle special cases. (Oddly, the "Requesting deletions" section of WQ:VFD is still a userspace transclusion!) ~ Ningauble (talk) 16:47, 16 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Meta-wiki RfC/Us

edit

I've read your comment there. You're not the only one to desire that. But I could not think of a simple, practical test to distinguish between small wikis with working vs. broken dispute resolution. I had a brief dialogue with an admin on another small wiki about that, with some past RfC examples considered, starting at timestamp 05:36, 11 February 2012 (UTC) in the RfC. There was also a discussion about issues with nationalistic POV in some wikis on m:Talk:Request for comment and now there's more discussion about the scoping and associated process of RfCs in general over there. Eusebius

edit

Hi, thanks for sorting out the formatting - I'm a newb here and have a lot to learn. About the Gilbert quote, I'd rather integrate it into the page when I've worked out where in Eusebius' works it comes from, to improve the organization of the page, but what do you think's best ? I can always leave it in for the moment. Thanks. --He to Hecuba (talk) 16:24, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Finding the original source is a worthy goal. Until then, I think a good tertiary source is good enough. (See my essay on Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources.) Gilbert's compendium (later editions are titled Three Thousand Selected Quotations From Brilliant Writers) has been in circulation, and reprinted, for more than 100 years, so it seems safe to say that, even though it is known to contain some errors, it is a quoteworthy source of attribution. ~ Ningauble (talk) 18:55, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks, I'll bear that in mind in the future. --He to Hecuba (talk) 14:44, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

This is a school

edit

It's not a single user who's been vandalising, but quite a few. This is a school, and that's why there's been such a high incidence of vandalism. Just a heads up.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 195.246.108.11 (talk) 12:20, 6 March 2012‎

Good luck with your education. Remember that it's up to you to do the learning, regardless of whatever else may be going on at the school. ~ Ningauble (talk) 12:48, 6 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

A couple message changes

edit

Hello, could you please remove the space after REDIRECT (or escape it) so that clicking it actually works and adds also the brackets? Also, I've placed a request on MediaWiki talk:Sitenotice. Thanks, Nemo 15:19, 14 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I assume your first point refers to the edit tools at MediaWiki:Wikimedia-editpage-tos-summary. I have escaped the space character that charinsert treats as a delimiter. Thanks for suggesting the fix.
Regarding the sitenotice, I am hesitant to remove it without community discussion. Feel free to propose a replacement notice at the Village pump. ~ Ningauble (talk) 13:28, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for fixing it. For the second, I have already linked to that request from the village pump, the comment you see is the only received one. --Nemo 14:26, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Question about long intros

edit

Hi there Ningauble, I hope you're doing well! ;) I've got a question about long intros. You generally seem to prefer shorter ones, allowing a linkback to en.wikipedia for more info. With that in mind, what do you think about these two different before/after intro versions, regarding the length? Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 18:25, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

The present version seems a little wordy, but I approve adding information identifying primary reasons the subject is notable. It isn't so long that I would spend time rewording it myself. ~ Ningauble (talk) 13:34, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay thank you. -- Cirt (talk) 16:17, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Misquoting another user

edit

Ningauble, you've gotten quite upset in the past about what you felt to be misquoting statements from you. Please note, it is incorrect to refer to "Cirt's point", here, as it is not mine, but that of BD2412 (talk · contributions), see diff. Please take care to remember this in future discussions on this particular issue. Thank you, -- Cirt (talk) 17:18, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I believe it was a point you put forth for policy consideration as point #4, and restated for discussion as discussion as point #3. I realize you adapted it from a remark by BD in a discussion elsewhere, which did not appear to be a policy proposal per se. I thought it was convenient to refer to it thusly, but I will revise my post to give attribution for the original idea. Henceforth, I shall try to refrain from referring to anything you say that does not appear to be original. ~ Ningauble (talk) 17:53, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for your understanding! I really appreciate it! Thanks again, -- Cirt (talk) 17:59, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Can I recreate the page Anubhav Srivastava which was earlier deleted

edit

Dear Administrator, I wish to re-create the page and add some really good, motivating quotes from the maker of an upcoming film called Carve your Destiny by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anubhav_Srivastava and the reason for adding this to WIKIQUOTE is ONLY GOOD QUOTATIONS submitted online by Anubhav on facebook and elsewhere. Here once again I mention I bear NO affiliation to the project whatsoever. My sole purpose is providing inspiring and motivational quotes for the readers of wikiquote. You may have a look at some of the quotations here: http://www.facebook.com/NeverGivingUp

Thanks. —This unsigned comment is by Srivaas22 (talkcontribs) 20:08, 5 April 2012‎.

It is only appropriate to restart an article after a vote for deletion if the original reason for deletion does not apply to the new information and content. Given that the stated purpose of the facebook page is promotional ("This page has been set up to promote the mission of changing the world through the message from the film Carve Your Destiny.") and given that quoting from promotional materials was the principal reason for deleting the original article, I seriously doubt that the community would accept a new article based on that type of material. ~ Ningauble (talk) 14:47, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply, as I said before I am not here to promote any upcoming venture but it was just my opinion to add a few quotes that's it but if isn't as per wiki policy, let me withdraw my request but just a word on that quoting from promotional material thing, in your view its promotional but it is also the original source of the quotes. Anyways thanks again. ~ Srivaas22 (talk)

Do you Know Saadi

edit

Hi dear. I saw in one of your comments that you have written about Saadi. I want to add some of saadi's quotes here. would you help me in translation problem? Soroush90gh (talk) 18:57, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I do not know where to find good translations of Saadi. (Translating poetry is a very difficult art, and ought not be attempted by amateurs like us.) ~ Ningauble (talk) 19:06, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikiquote in the news

edit

Lovely! Thank you for sharing these three mentions. What do you think to create a page in Wikiquote namespace? I'm not sure if it is still so, but years before even the EnWP stocked such references to the project in major media outlet. Also, a link to a talk or comment page would be useful I guess. Without knowing it was actually your talk subpage, I edited that page directly to leave a thank you note. --Aphaia (talk) 23:12, 24 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

The Avengers (2012 film)

edit

As I saw that you were recently online, I thought I might ask you to perhaps intervene on this page. I'd like to recuse myself as it gives the appearance of an edit war and I do not wish to act in a punitive or antagonistic manner with this user. Can you take a look? Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 13:52, 7 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I will keep an eye on it. No surprise when this happens to an article on a newly released film that is heavily marketed to 12 year olds. The notion that "less is more" must seem alien to the audience of a genre where mere heroes are not enough, they must be super. ~ Ningauble (talk) 14:34, 7 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ujjwal patni

edit

Dear Contributor,

Greetings

I have created the Ujjwal patni page. Being new to Wikiquote, probably i was not able to create it in the best possible way. I am reading his book since years. I also heard him on different TV shows and I feel that he impacted and transformed my life in a very positive way so i decided to create this page. There is no reason or intention to indulge in any form of shameless promotion or marketing as subject himself is too ethical and propagator of principles. I would personally look into it that this page never becomes a platform for such activities. If this page gives an impression that it is promotional, then its my inability to create. Need your help on this.

Thanks

QOTD for 10, 11 & 12 June 2012

edit

The quotes at Wikiquote talk:Quote of the day/June 11, 2012 & Wikiquote talk:Quote of the day/June 12, 2012 need to be placed on the project pages at Wikiquote:Quote of the day/June 11, 2012 & Wikiquote:Quote of the day/June 12, 2012 pages by an administrator. I confirmed the accuracy of the Thelonious Monk quote which was selected yesterday for the QOTD of Wikiquote:Quote of the day/June 10, 2012, but have not yet been able to properly format it, though doing that is of lesser priority now, and could wait until tomorrow, when the rolling protection of pages should release it to editing. I had lost track of not having kept up with a few things here, and noticed someone had made the selection yesterday, had time to look up the quote as accurate, but was not able to edit that page or the 2 others at that point, and only made the further selections later. I expect to have time to attend to further selections today. ~ Kalki·· 13:51, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pufferfish

edit

Hey there, I'm Megan from the WMF fundraising team. I came across your idea of the appeal from the pufferfish and am testing it right now! Really great idea, thanks for posting it. I'll let you know how it does. Thanks! Meganhernandez (talk) 17:08, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Although I endorsed testing it,[2] it was not my idea. Credit goes to Meta user Mbz1.[3][4]

I don't know whether Jimbo or the Charismatic megafauna will go extinct first, but please keep testing new ideas. I expect Wikimedia to be around for a very, very long time if it can find effective fundraising appeals that do not depend on mortal attractions. ~ Ningauble (talk) 18:22, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your prompt response to the situation. Concerning range blocks, it seems from the relevant mediawiki page that there's no difference in the procedure now IPv6 has come in, unless you're blocking an IPv6 range. Again, thanks. --User:Tryst (talk to me!) 18:31, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
