Hostility to images edit

I was just about to leave from my current location, but checking in here, I noted your removal of an image from the section for Spain (1937) on the W. H. Auden page, with the comment "No dove, no papa, no engineer in illustration linked to quotation; please do not trivialize this page." I thus decided to make at least a few comments before I go.

I would much prefer people to not trivialize attempts at other's artistic or poetic presentations, but I accept that as one of the consequences of actually attempting them. I have noted your quite apparent hostility to the use of images for some years now, from a stance which commonly seems haughty and contemptuous, and I will confess that I too can manifest such attitudes at times, but usually only towards those who I perceive to seem most prone to manifest them unjustly or smugly. It is certainly your right to express your opinions and I encourage honest expressions of opinions as necessary to proper resolutions of conflicts. I have also conceded some of the images I could find in relation to quotes for that particular work about the Spanish Civil War were among the least satisfying matches I could make, but I still feel the use of them in drawing attention to some of the expressions of Auden and the facts or themes he refers to is better than to have no such images at all. I have asserted that there are probably better ones that might be found, and do not seek to discourage others from doing so. There will always be contentions about how quotes and other expressions should be presented, but I do believe most people do appreciate such efforts as people make to select and emphasize some of the best in ways that present more than a blank page to minds that often remain blank of many forms of knowledge or imagination about what a person speaks. I believe that Images generally make a page MORE interesting and informative to most people, and I continue to encourage their use, in opposition to those few who I perceive more inclined to promote rather passionless, uniform and dull monotony, for what can be a number or reasons I do not necessarily attempt to probe, nor pretend to fully fathom.

The image you removed is not one I will presently restore, because I concede the quote and potential associations that can be made with it are somewhat weak or obscure — but I actually do believe that image is entirely appropriate for the poem, and might search for a better quote from it to link to it, within a week or so. I remain too busy with many other things to spend much time on it presently. To the extent you have not engaged in simply removing images, I actually do appreciate some of the quotes you have added, and hope you will add more, perhaps to poets pages beyond those of Auden. Blessings. ~ Kalki·· 17:05, 16 March 2012 (UTC) + tweaksReply

Thank you very much edit

Thanks ever so much for your helpful participation at Wikiquote:Village_pump#Is_there_a_consensus_on_an_image_question.3F and at Wikiquote_talk:Image_use_policy#General_policy_considerations. Much appreciated! ;) Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 18:51, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

re About images... edit

Strongly agree. The main problem now is, we mostly seem to be in agreement in the community, we just need to resolve this. :) -- Cirt (talk) 21:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Next step edit

I'd like your advice, what do you think is the next step to take to help move things along at Wikiquote talk:Image use policy? -- Cirt (talk) 17:22, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

re "Dunces and dullards"? edit

Completely inappropriate language. But it's on his own user talk page, so that's given a little leeway, sometimes. You might want to consult with BD2412 (talk · contributions) if you want more input about that type of inappropriate behavior from that user, as he had blocked that user in the past. -- Cirt (talk) 14:30, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hope it turns out with a constructive result for you. -- Cirt (talk) 17:56, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, consensus is pretty clear by the numbers per support of moving forward definitively on this issue of the images policy. Specific language would be nice, so long as it results in, well, ... a result! -- Cirt (talk) 18:31, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Carl Sagan edit

I've just entered a comment on Talk:Carl_Sagan#Removal_of_images on which I am sure you would like to comment. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to reverse the policy that was fully discussed - I'm just not sure of the application of it. Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 13:56, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Antony and Cleopatra edit

I just reverted your removal of the 19th century paintings showing characters in the play, because the image use policy is not so restrictive as to forbid them. The page could certainly be better illustrated, but I would prefer that it had some (mediocre) illustrations rather than none. --User:Tryst (talk to me!) 20:43, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Any choice of image creates an interpretation. Whether to use 19th century depictions is really a matter of taste, so please replace any such images you remove with other suitable illustrations. You're doing excellent work (i.e. Samuel Taylor Coleridge), so don't let my comments deter you. --User:Tryst (talk to me!) 12:53, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Comment brackets edit

I have corrected your edit to the Jorge Luis Borges article.[1] Please be careful with <!--  --> brackets. If the closing delimiter is missing or incorrect then everything up to the next closing delimiter or the end of the article will be removed! ~ Ningauble (talk) 16:38, 23 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Will triple- or quadruple-check this in the future! - Macspaunday (talk) 18:33, 23 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

E. M. Forster edit

It is clear that you are working hard in this project but please be careful when removing images. That was such a messy edit. Regards. --Omnipaedista (talk) 15:53, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sock puppet of Kalki edit

Hi,

on 22 August 2012, at 12:07 you expressed at my talk page concern that my account may be a sock puppet of Kalki. This is not the case, but what led you to this assumption? Thanks in advance. --P3Y229 (talk) 12:50, 22 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

re Quote of the day edit

Have you noticed that your comment on this subject seems to have had an effect? In recent days, the quote of the day has been illustrated mostly by pictures of the authors, instead of Hoag's Object, lights seen through fog, hands reaching to the sky, etc. And the quotations themselves seem to be designed to make clear to benighted people of limited imagination that they need to learn about idealism and justice and freedom before they can understand that galaxies, rainbows, and heart-shaped stones are (to the properly instructed mind) sources of wisdom and enlightenment. - Macspaunday (talk) 19:14, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, Macspaunday, I was noticing clear consensus from the community at the Village Pump discussions in multiple threads over time on this, so I was removing some superfluous images. For example, here, making the pages much more focused on quotes, instead of images which seem to be the artistic expression of the quote page layout individual, and not necessarily directly relevant to the quotes. -- Cirt (talk) 19:37, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Please edit

Please see User talk:Cirt, and Wikiquote:Administrators'_noticeboard#Image_discussion_.28aka_Cirt_vs._Kalki.29.

I specifically went to Village Pump, first, with this.

At Village Pump, it appears the community consensus does not support misusing the Main Page in this manner by one user.

I was previously unaware that one user gets to decide the Wikiquote Quote of the Day layout and dictate it to the rest of the community without any correction whatsoever.

It is frustrating that Wikiquote:Image use policy and Wikiquote:NPOV are being flagrantly violated on the Main Page.

What are your thoughts about Wikiquote:Administrators'_noticeboard#Image_discussion_.28aka_Cirt_vs._Kalki.29?

Thank you for your time,

-- Cirt (talk) 03:05, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much edit

Thank you for your kind comments.

I'm taking a break from participating in these sorts of discussions or indeed major activity on Wikiquote, in favor of other quality improvement projects for the time being.

I'll check in every so often at my user talk page.

Thanks again,

-- Cirt (talk) 15:53, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
