Split up the Bible?
editI am proposing to split up the Bible article, maybe with a separate article for each major book, so we could end up with 30 or so. Maybe I should just be bold and do it, but I thought I ought to sound out people first.--Cato 20:18, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
- I apologize for being slow to respond. I'm not sure what to do about The Bible. It presents a unique challenge in that many different versions are extremely popular, and none of it was originally English. Furthermore, like with William Shakespeare, there are many who would love to include long passages, many of which have been memorized by millions. One could create an entire wiki just for Bible quotes.
- Because of this, I've been reluctant to engage in any recommendations of how to attack this problem. It seems likely that we would need to split up the books at some point, but I don't know if we've reached that point, nor am I inclined to study the article to see where we should go with it. I'm sorry that I'm not of any help, but we all must be selective about what we work on here, and I've counted on the likelihood that many others would be more interested in this one than I am. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 01:40, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

- Welcome aboard, Cato. Might I make a suggestion on deletions? I find it a good idea to include a prefix in the edit summary for a short-hand justification of the deletion; e.g., "VFD:", "SD: nonsense", or at least "SD: G1" (per Wikiquote:Speedy deletions#The cases). It's especially important for speedy deletions, since they have no other documentation. Thanks for listening. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:13, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Humor pieces
editThe purpose of a humor piece is to get a laugh, and you don't have to be accurate for that. Never mind the dubiousness of Gates talking about 32-bit operating systems and IBM while unveiling an 8-bit system that IBM wasn't involved with. w:User:Gazpacho 00:04, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
The Oxford sources might be unreliable, I'm not familiar with them. Do they make a representation that their content is researched and accurate? Humor pieces don't generally do this, because that isn't the point.
Why would Bill Gates talk about 32-bit operating systems and IBM in the context of MSX? There was, of course, a period when Microsoft had a tacit agreement with IBM not to produce a 32-bit system, but that was in the late 80s, well past the attributed timeframe. The attribution just doesn't make sense. w:User:Gazpacho 17:14, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Steward elections
editHi Cato - I spotted you question on the stewards elections (for Lar). Looks like it has been answered by Lar (& Cary). Has that covered it for you now? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:45, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hey - no stress I merely saw your vote, saw it had been answered (I thought reasonably) and as I "knew" you thought I would ask. I had no idea I assure you that you had other messages, no I've not contacted anyone else, it was merely that I knew you and considered that your point was valid and appeared to have been answered. That really is all and I'm sorry to have bothered you --Herby talk thyme 08:48, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
VP
editHi Cato, I'm afraid your saying "May I warn people not to try to oppose Lar" on VP sounds sarcastic. I don't figure out what you intended with that, but assume sarcasm wouldn't. Re-wording may be helpful for the community - at least me as its part. Thanks :)
Sondheim
editYou have a point. I got so excited about the Sondheim page that I added the quotes first, and checked the existence of the show pages as an afterthought. As it is, there is no page for Follies, so I would leave those two with the Sondheim page. But do you want to be that strict about it? Isn't there room for a really good quote in more than one place? If not, let me know and I'll move the other quotes to their respective pages. --Ubiquity 00:10, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- No, you're right, I'll move the ones that have shows of their own. I just don't like the format of those other pages. But what's right is right. --Ubiquity 00:42, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
Hammerstein Jewish?
editWe've had this discussion before, and I bet we have it again, but do you really want to categorize Hammerstein as Jewish? His mom was Scottish and he and his sibs were raised to be Christians. He did not identify Jewish, although he admitted that most of his best friends were Jewish. I'm willing to concede in the Disraeli case, because he probably maintained his Christianity for political reasons, but that's obviously not the case with Hammerstein. Where do you draw the line? If a Jewish ancestor makes you Jewish, cat+ Elvis.
Personally, as a big musical comedy fan, I'd love to claim Hammerstein along with Sondheim, Bernstein, The Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Arlen and Harburg, Berlin, Ebb, Ashman and Menken -- hell, I'd claim Cohan and Porter if I thought I could get away with it. ;-) So I'll leave it alone unless I've convinced you. But I would like to understand your criteria. --Ubiquity 01:01, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that I have too much of a tendency to do original research. But what do you do when reliable sources disagree? American Heritage and Stephen Whitfield's In Search of American Jewish Culture are also reliable sources, and give many more convincing details than Stanford's Sanford. --Ubiquity 21:54, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
Sorry to keep going on about this, but I think I you haven't addressed my main issue. Hammerstein was baptized a Christian, not because of coercion, and never claimed to be Jewish. Can we call him Jewish in spite of that? I am inclined to dismiss the texts that refer to him as Jewish that don't mention this, simply because there is such a widespread notion that he was Jewish. --Ubiquity 18:59, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
New Year's resolution
editHappy New Year! One of my New Year's resolutions is to finish Wikiquote:Bartlett's 1919 Index - but I can't do it alone. There are 234 red links for which articles need to be created, and 275 blue links for which articles need to be checked. Although I've been trying to get one done each day, lately I have not had time to do even that! Please consider making a commitment to help me keep my resolution by creating or checking one entry on this page per week. Help public domain quotes find their home in 2008! Cheers! VfD on Free Willzyx
editJeff: can we move that VfD out of Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/Log/Pending action yet?--Cato 22:43, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in responding, Cato. I wanted to review the state before replying, but I'm so preoccupied in meatspace right now that I'm unfairly holding things up by my attempt at preparation. If you feel the merge issues have been dealt with, by all means place it into the regular archive. If not, I'll try to look it over sometime soon (I hope) to see if I can do something about it. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 00:02, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your comment on the above new article. There are new articles started by British Columbia persons, and the article about British Columbia now has quotes which mention BC or placenames of BC as per conversation at the AFD. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 03:45, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Have you had a look at the Judaism page lately? It is almost solely composed of anti-Jewish quotes. Some of these probably belong on Jews, but that page almost has the same problem. I am going to try to prune some of them down (for instance, tonight I moved the John Chrysostom quotes to his page, though I'm sure Écrasez l'infâme (talk · contributions) will revert me). But I thought you might be able to help me come up with some positive quotes about Judaism to balance the page. --Ubiquity 00:50, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Presumptions...
editHi... Thanks for your kind words in Poetlister's candidacy. But I want to point out that "knows more than almost anyone here about how to run a medium-sized wiki" might be a fair bit of an overstatement! And further, I'd never presume to claim to know more about how to run any particular wiki than the denizens of that particular wiki do... the most I would ever do is say "well I have learned that X works in place A and Y works in place B, and did you think of Z?" because to do any more would be presumptuous of me compared to the good hardworking volunteers who know their home wiki best, certainly better than any steward could. But yes, I do think that 2 'crats is fairly low for wikis of this approximate size. Cheers and all the best. ++Lar: t/c 22:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
My Reasoning
editIf I am speaking to Cato, please listen to me. I am not sure where to put this since there is no respond option, but the reason I have removed so many quotes from the Naruto section of wikiquote is because they are from characters that are not in the series and random quotes from REAL vandals. For example, "Sai" is in there. Sai is from "Naruto Shippuuden", which there is a seperate section for. Another example from the quotes was in Kakashi Hatake's section, in which one childish vandal wrote "don't fart in my face". One more example was in Kidomaru's section, in which somebody wrote three phrases:
1) I'm not sick! 2) I'm not terminally ill! 3) I don't have tuberculosis!
Kidomaru never said any of those. In fact, the vandal was so stupid that they put those quotes which implied illness in the wrong character's data... Even the character they meant to place them in never said any of those quotes. I was simply removing what did not belong. If that qualifies ME as a vandal, I apologize because I guess I'm a bad person for doing such an act. I am the kind of person who does not stand for when my show is mocked... I would never vandalize something for my shows or someone else's work. So there you have it; My reasoning for deleting from wikiquote.
Bible/book in {{Bible contents}}
editThe Bible contents template has no bugs. It is just that all the books are in the Bible/book name
format. If you hover your mouse pointer over the links in the template, then you will see.
I was thinking of renaming the page names to Bible/Genesis and so forth. For now, I have redirected Bible/Psalms to Psalms.
Feel free to tweak the template and do whatever you please.--Inesculent 03:37, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
I reverted your edit to Eleanor Farjeon - the newer image is of entrance to King's Cross St. Pancras tube station serving both railway stations, and both are in the district of Kings Cross, and I find the older image of a building there in Farjeon's time preferable. Others I had considered were Image:Clock in Kings Cross.jpg and Image:九又四分之三站台.jpg. ~ Kalki 20:49, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Proposed deletion
editHi Cato. You recently told McNoddy (talk · contributions) that he shouldn't have removed the {{prod}} on Liza Tarbuck, but I fear you're in error. According to Wikiquote:Proposed deletion, anyone may remove a {{prod}}. Furthermore:
If anyone, including the article's creator, removes Template:Prod from an article for any reason, do not put it back, except if the removal was clearly not an objection to deletion (such as blanking the entire article, or removing the tag along with inserting blatant nonsense); however, if the edit is not obviously vandalism, do not restore it, even if the tag was apparently removed in bad faith.
I didn't tell McNoddy this yet, in case there's another policy I don't understand that contradicts this, but I'm pretty sure I'm right. If you disagree, let me know. If you agree, please let McNoddy know. --Ubiquity 12:40, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think the idea is the {{prod}} is only for totally non-controversial deletions. If anyone disagrees, there is sufficient controversy to either let the page stand or go to VFD. Deleting the {{prod}} is a pretty good way to demonstrate disagreement. ;-) --Ubiquity 20:14, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Invitation
editWould it interest you to become a Wikiquote administrator? You've contributed so much to this site. If it isn't, however, something that would appeal to you, I hope that you will pardon this intrusion. - InvisibleSun 20:07, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- I'm happy to second the invitation.--Cato 20:11, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Goodness, this is certainly an unexpected honour! I'm very pleased to have been asked, but it wouldn't be a good idea for me to accept. You see, I'm the sort of man who can only concentrate on the things he shouldn't really be doing. I can be very industrious at idling, such as I do here, but making me an admin would be the first step towards making it a chore for me to log on to Wikiquote, and that would be the end of it. Much better that I should carry on creating pages, and doing the odd bit of maintenance on the side. But thanks again for the vote of confidence. Cheers! Antiquary 20:31, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Checkuser congrats
editCongratulations on becoming our newest checkuser, Cato! I'm afraid I was so tired after all the offline emailing and little wind-up tasks that I neglected to publicly welcome you to the ranks of community-approved snoops. ☺ I know you're already familiar with CU work from your own wiki, but I highly recommend reviewing m:CheckUser policy if you haven't recently, and signing up for checkuser-l access when you get a chance. The policy page also talks about an IRC channel for CU stuff, although I haven't used it to date. (Aphaia, who is everywhere, may be more familiar with its activities.)

Removal of Unsourced Limbaugh Quotes
editThe quotes that I removed from the Rush Limbaugh are unsourced. They are mentioned in precisely one book, and that book does not cite a source for the quotes. In particular, the quote about James Earl Ray (where Limbaugh mentions that Martin Luther King Jr.’s killer should received a posthumous Medal of Honor) has not been referenced anywhere else. It has not been mentioned by the press, and it has not been cited by Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the NAACP, or any other notable leaders of the African-American community. If he really made this statement, then it would have been mentioned somewhere else. It has not. The quote remains unsourced, and should be removed. 17.224.39.215 23:49, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- I made the following reply on the IP talk page: "The general principle is that to call a quote "sourced", we need a reliable source. A published book is prima facie a reliable source. We do not normally demand multiple sources, and we certainly do not require reliable sources to cite their own sources or you get into an infinite regression. However, I think that it would be quite in order to put a brief note of your concerns under the relevant quotes, possibly linking to a longer discussion on the talk page. If you think there is a wider concern that the whole of Wikiquote should discuss, please post to WQ:VP. I very much welcome your constructive criticism here, but please let's discuss things rather than taking precipitate action."--Cato 06:26, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- He should gain consensus for the "brief note" before he places it on the page. The place he should do that is WQ:VP. This IP has been campaigning to remove every quote that doesn't paint Limbaugh in a beatific light. Wikiquote's sourcing policy is clear; this user/vandal doesn't get to overrule it by disruption. --69.86.228.70 02:43, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- I made the following reply on the IP talk page: "I take your point about Rush Limbaugh, but I don't believe that one line commenting on the source (assuming that the information in tha tline is correct) is unreasonable. Of course, you are at liberty to post on WQ:VP if you think it would be helpful."--Cato 20:02, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Removal of checkuser access
editHello Cato. Your checkuser access has been temporarily removed in accordance with a request made by FT2, pending review by Cary Bass and the Wikiquote community. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you would like to comment, please do so on the request page.
For archival purposes, the full text of the request follows.
Removal of checkuser from Cato@en.wikiquote
Due to circumstances that Jimmy Wales and Cary and at least one other enquote checkuser are aware of, and events in the last couple of hours, please de-checkuser Cato on English Wikiquote.
I emphasize that this is a temporary action only to protect that project until its own users are in possession of the relevant information to decide what they wish, and in no way intended to impinge upon the sovreignty of that project. Unfortunately I cannot find anyone else better able to make that decision in light of events that are rapidly unfolding.
I will post a fuller explanation of this to Cary and Aphaia immediately, and to the wikiquote community hopefully tomorrow.
FT2 (Talk | email) 03:14, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- Removed until this can be reviewed by Cary and the Wikiquote community, given the serious issues posed by checkuser abuse. —{admin} Pathoschild 03:18:03, 06 September 2008 (UTC)
