Gabe newell speedy edit

Hi Aphaia. Why do you think Gabe newell deserves speedy? I agree with you that the article isn't up to much, but Newell is reasonably notable, and there is a quote, so I don't see which speedy criterion applies. If I'm wrong, let me know. Otherwise we can change the speedy proposal to a prod. --Ubiquity 13:28, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Anyway, I cleaned it up and moved it to Gabe Newell. See if you still think it needs to die. --Ubiquity 13:41, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your note, Ubiquity. I was not sure if it deserves to speedy or keep, as well as I was not sure if the comment really should go to him (out of context, the quotation doesn't seem to fall on any quotability). So I would have liked to take others' attention. Thanks for your time, again.
I am okay with your merger, unless someone claims it shouldn't be attributed to this guy. Until then, let us see. --Aphaia 14:03, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

I seems to have gotten the congratulatory logo working. I saw what you were trying to do, and you had it almost right both times. I used the first URL syntax (from "upload.wikimedia.org") with the second target ("Image:Wikiquote-logo-15000.png"), then purged the cache and forced a reload, and voilà! it worked. I'm glad, too, because I couldn't for the life of me remember what the syntax was, nor where or when Cbrown1023 (who's on a wikibreak) told me how to find images for use in MediaWiki functions. Thanks for doing all the work, and sorry to take the final credit for the change. <sheepish grin> ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:52, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Aphaia-san,

Hello, Aphaia Could you please consider the request here?--BrettR 09:46, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

WQ:RFA scheme edit

Do you really think we should have a "scheme" like Wikipedia often uses to organize the support/oppose/neutral votes? I've never seen a WQ RFA that couldn't be tallied (purely on the position labels) in seconds even without such a scheme. On the other hand, I think it subtly discourages people from posting anywhere but in the "Support" section, which our supportive community hardly needs. Furthermore, in the infrequent times when we have complex discussions, the positions are more nuanced than mere "support", "oppose", or "neutral", implicitly labelling some editors' positions with stronger terms than they intend.

Given these issues, and the fact that we already tend to ratify nearly every admin candidate with strong community support, this just strikes me as a bad idea to import from Wikipedia. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 16:00, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Honestly I am not sure and personally rather against that. However when people put # at the head of their comment, it is pointless to mix supportive votes and no such. I won't mind if you turn that into a plain list without such scheme. --Aphaia 17:31, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
D'oh! I hadn't even noticed the automatic numbering. There is obvious logic to that. But I still think that taking advantage of this neat MediaWiki feature, as many do, isn't worth losing the more free-form discussion that uncategorized posts provide. I think I will change it, and perhaps then we'll see if anyone else has any opinions on this. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:19, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rename a user edit

Hello Aphaia,

Is it possible to rename Special:Contributions/Yann (2 contributions) to something else so that I can get this account? Thanks, m:User:Yann 88.160.188.126 23:08, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, since the edits came from this user:Yann seems a meaningful goodfaithed edit, I am hesitate to let you usurp that account immediately. He must give a chance to challenge your request at least, I think. Could you please give a look to WQ:AN where you find a similar request and how we have handled it? Also I recommend you to submit your request to WQ:AN, instead of asking several b'crat personally, regarding it may not be necessarily an impostor. --Aphaia 00:11, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Protection of high visibility templates edit

Following our completely futile discussion on IRC, I'll request your assistance with the matter here on-wiki too, can you please have a look around and protect those templates which are transcluded into the main namespace, in order to better protect casual readers from having to suffer offensive imagery being transcluded into articles. I've also made a request at WQ:VP, just so you're aware. This is something that could do with being dealt with sooner rather than later, if possible. If you want me to compile a list of all templates transcluded into the main namespace, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll try and have a comprehensive list drawn up as quickly as possible. usurpation request — Jack Merridew edit

Hi,

I see there are just three 'crats here and thought I'd would just ask directly. I've primarily been active on en:wp - and I'll answer any questions about that if you like. I've been harassed by en:wp's w:User:Grawp vandal and one form that's taken has been his creation of accounts on other wiki's using my preferred user name 'Jack Merridew'.

I've just been through this process at wikt:Wiktionary:Changing username#User:JackMerridew TEMP → User:Jack Merridew and that's done. I also see that you just dealt with a similar situation for User:PatríciaR; I know her on commons and if you have any concerns feel free to touch base with her.

nb: I'm having trouble confirming email; I entered it, but keep getting the message 'Invalid confirmation code. The code may have expired.' I've tried twice after requesting a new code be sent to me.

Cheers, JackMerridew TEMP 11:34, 20 April 2008 (UTC) a.k.a. DavidReply

Thanks for heading up. I'll correct it (we handle with no usurpation request in that way; simple renaming could be).--Aphaia 12:29, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
For the record: the page pointed out has been no policy page. It was posted by an user on his discretion, just copying the other project policy and the things may happen in the way it says or not. I haven't known that page until today ... Rather things may happen on each b'crats' discretion and community convention. Thanks for your understanding. Cheers, --Aphaia 13:01, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I didn't realize the history of the page - or the newness. I believe I found it just by assuming the usual shortcut worked here with a 'Q' dropped in. Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. David 15:11, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Edit Conflicts...? edit

"your edits overwhelmed RC (without minor edit sign) and hinders the other editors do RC patrol"

I had no idea that having edits up on the Recent Changes was something offensive or whether it caused problems...but if it's necessary that I add "minor edit" to all the vote edits, then I'll do that. Thanks for letting me know. Bare in mind that I never even heard of overwhelming the RC before...this is something I just learned. - Zarbon 19:04, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Setting the minor-edit flag for adding votes to Quote of the Day is not appropriate. These represent standard, meaningful edits, not typo fixes. I must respectfully disagree with Aphaia's assessment of Zarbon's editing here. Although I can assure Zarbon that his efforts to get our community to feature quotes from Nazis will not be successful at this time, and are therefore pointless, I don't agree that his increasing participation in QotD should be treated as problematic to the project. As a regular, registered editor, he is entitled to his opinion. As far as the substantial additions to QotD pages in a short time, I myself have done this when the mood struck me. Yes, it can be inconvenient to RC patrollers, but it's not uncommon for good-faith editors to do this, even without bots (again, see some of my non-minor maintenance edits back in 2006), and is therefore just part of the work. Let's try to back down from this confrontation, folks. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 20:33, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alright, so should I or shouldn't I add a "minor edit" tag per edit? I'm confused and I want to know what to do in order to avoid being temp banned or something else that may be regarded as not following criteria. - Zarbon 21:33, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I respectfully disagree with Jeff, but I'd like to offer my apology to force you to pick one way which could be controversial. So although I don't withdraw my standpoints (votes are minors in my opinion; anyway managerial things are overhead and not primary concern of this website), I don't mind you to keep your votes as "major edits". Personally you'll be appreciate to pace yourself down at your voting, if you keep them as major edits. Further discussion may be preferable in a public discussion place, like WQ:VP. --Aphaia 21:38, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

You know that I myself am apologetic when need be. I'm sorry myself if I may have given you the wrong idea Aphaia. I hope that we can all contribute and that all our perspectives can be heard and rightly so. Thanks for letting me know about my pace, I know I can be rather fast but rest assured, I don't vote without putting in thought first. - Zarbon 22:42, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Crum375 edit

There is evidence that this was created by the same person behind the Cato, Yehudi and Poetlister accounts (and a great deal of the "community" support for allowing him to keep the username came from Yehudi and Poetlister in any case) - it may make sense to re-examine this decision in light of this. Random832 12:58, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

We have made no decision yet. There was no request for usurpation in the legitimate course about the Crum375. I only handle requests which come through the right process. Thanks. --Aphaia 14:09, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's patently absurd. Crum375 refused to post here precisely because he was afraid some unscrupulous Wikiquote CU would CU him. And, of course, his concerns turned out to be completely justified. Anyone, here's a suggestion; rather than insisting that "the right process" must be followed, why not instead do "the right thing"? That would be ever-so-much more sensible. Jayjg 05:29, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Replied on your talk. --Aphaia 06:08, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've put in the request as a third party. Poetlister was acting maliciously when "she" refused the request; what's your excuse? Random832 12:47, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

BLP edit

Err, yeah, so I see. Well, the lack of any such policy, or the existence of a weak draft policy, certainly won't do much to protect the Foundation when some wealthy individual decides to sue. In any event, with or without such a policy, material that is unsourced, poorly sourced, or sourced to primary sources, should not be used on Wikiquote, if for no other reason than common sense. It's no wonder people are agitating to disband the project altogether. Jayjg 05:27, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikiquote is a small project that can learn from the painful experience of larger and older projects. So far it seems remarkably resistant to doing so. Showing that Wikiquote can learn, including learning some common sense (e.g. doing the right thing is more important than following the right process), and in a big hurry, would go some way towards convincing others that the project doesn't need to be disbanded. The Crum375 and Poetlister/Cato/Yehudi fiascos were huge black marks against Wikiquote; don't compound that by being defensive and making excuses. Fix the problems, it's quite obvious what they are; I suggest you start by renaming the impostor/harasser Crum375 account. Jayjg 05:53, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

And if you think my deletion is abuse, I disagree. There is no community agreement to employ that template and there were abuses of that templates we don't want to see. For what it's worth, I think {{test2a}} is a little harsh for a first warning to a newcomer. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a level 1 template appropriate for talk page conduct. Maybe we need one? ~ Ningauble 18:28, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Point taken. We have only one template message for blanking right now. If you make a variety, it'll be great. --Aphaia 19:48, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stop being so aggresive.

  • " Please don't alter the article without telling me first"
  • "I did this, permission blah blah blah"
  • "Hope we can collaborate in future"

Absolutely trivial. Wikipedia discourages trivia. Irrelevant articles are removed, the talk was irrelevant so I removed it. YOU are welcome to WP:Assume good faith. Now stop annoying me. The warning template says may contain, blah blah blah, because it says may and not does or does not leaving it out is as good as leaving it in. Sioraf 14:07, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Various Japanese Wikimedia sites edit

As you are the only Japanese that I know very well at Wikimedia sites, I would like to ask a few questions:

  1. Per wmf:Licensing policy, I suppose that all Japanese wikis follow Japanese Copyright Law. Correct?
  2. Would you please help translate oldwikisource:Template:PD-US-1923-abroad/JA into Japanese or write a Japanese statement that pre-1923 works still copyrighted in Japan should not be transferred to Japanese Wikisource?
  3. Have you seen s:ja:Wikisource:削除依頼 about The Internationale in Japanese (s:ja:インターナショナル)? After I voted to delete the Japanese version still copyrighted in Japan, I have undeleted oldwikisource:インターナショナル with 1922 lyric by 小牧近江 who died in 1978. Multilingual Wikisource no longer has very active Japanese users as I know.
  4. Have you seen w:ja:インターナショナル_(歌)? It says that Japanese lyrics are left out due to copyright restrictions. Japanese Copyright Law forbids copying the entire lyric to claim fair use. Correct? If so, your fellow Japanese cannot freely sing The Internationale in Japanese. Conversely, we Chinese can freely sing The Internationale in Chinese by Qu Qiubai who was executed in 1935.

Thanks, --Jusjih 02:34, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

1 Right. All Wikimedia project in Japanese language follow both US Law and Japanese law.
2, 3: I'll have jawikisource people to give a look, they may be much familiar with issue. But in general if a person died 1974, his works are copyrighted until 2024, the 50 year later of his death. So oldwikisource:インターナショナル is also not in PD.
4: I've given it a look. It reads the copyright status of the Japanese lyrics is unclear so having the lyrics on the page may violate their copyright. For singing, if you sing it privately, it falls within the "private usage" which is a sort of fair use under Japanese Copyright Law, so you may safely sing it. In public space or for further publification you need to get permission instead.
Hope that helps. Btw I have recently put an import request on WQ:AN. Could you please to give a look? Thanks :) --Aphaia 02:42, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

For you might Wrestling not good enough to be listed on Wikiquote. I don't think, that a Wikiquote User can decide by himself what is memorable for all people and what's not. Then you HAVE to delete all this stupid TV Series Quotes too! What is so interesting on a Quote of a 40 years old TV Series that Wikiquote list this?

You accused wrongly as if it was my personal decision. It was requested for deletion in the process of the community and thus deleted. For details see WQ:PROD. It was not me as individual but the community as corporated into the process. Thanks! --Aphaia 18:58, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Recent Vandalism... again... edit

This appears to be another apparent sockpuppet of the slew of vandalism connected to the user name... User:MuchoSemen13. The same person keeps creating incessant vandalism, following around contributions and either reverting them at random or just plain vandalizing with different user names. I've found another recent sockpuppet vandalizing the same articles. Please check Black Frieza. All the same exact edits as the person pointed above, all the same places, same reverting vandalism. Please look at how the same person is reverting all the same material using different usernames, causing vandalism on the same places. Please look after these specific articles for me and if necessary, protect them from recently joined users in order to avoid vandalism; please help me maintain and sustain resourceful articles while avoiding vandalism from this same person. - Zarbon 01:19, 25 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

And now there's yet another slew of obvious sockpuppets for the same user... User:Meester Seester and TheClownPrinceofCrime. Please help me stop this vandalism, it's really getting out of hand again. - Zarbon 05:38, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Changing username edit

Aphaia, OK I'm still trying to learn about this topic. I performed a name change and did the recommended protection of the old username and talk page. But I'm stuck on the step of recreating and blocking the old name. When I try to recreate it, do I need to create a new password too? Thanks. ~ UDScott 20:26, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

:Hi UDScott, thank you for taking the task. I haven't give a thought if we could create an account without a new password. I suppose we needn't keep it because we would cast the recreated one away, so I usually give a random word as a new password. Hope it helps, cheers. --Aphaia 06:23, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

User Merge edit

Hi there! I have been using Wikipedia since about 2006. I forgot my old username until very recently (As in 2 days ago, when a friend pointed out a page I had started.) I made this newer account, [Fumitol] in July, since I really didn't like editing without an account. Is there a way to have my old account [duckyproductions] merged with my newer account [Fumitol] so as to reflect the period of time that I have been wikipedia-ing? I have no idea what the policy is on things like this. Thank You! --Fumitol 08:52, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, sorry to say but there is no way to merge multiple accounts. You are welcome to file a bug to bugzilla for request a new feature. Cheers, --Aphaia 14:12, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank You for the quick response! Have a great day :)!--Fumitol 17:22, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cannot register for USURP account edit

Thanks for doing this. Wondering if you can help me further. The user page says account not registered, but when I go to register for the name I get the message "Cannot create account: the requested username is already taken in the unified login system." Looking at the SUL list that does not seem to be the case. Any idea what is going on? Thanks, Rambo's Revenge 21:49, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Weird. Another weird thing is none of your accounts are SULed despite of the message. I'm not sure if it works, How do you think to SUL your accounts first and then to visit this wiki again? --Aphaia 02:47, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Assuming I understand you correctly, it won't let me set up a unified login. It gives a page saying

The unified account named "Rambo" includes the following accounts: (no list follows, and another box says)

Confirm account
This account has not yet been migrated to the unified account. If the global account is yours too, you can merge this account if you type the global account password:

Question edit

I must confess I still feel pretty ignorant about the tasks of name changing and usurpation. I would have liked to help with the recent one you did (for Droll2), but wasn't quite sure how to proceed. I think I understand how to do name changes, but not usurpations. I've tried to watch what you do, but in this case, there are not many clues. Can you help guide me little more. Thanks. ~ UDScott 20:33, 23 July 2010 (UTC) :Hi, thanks for raising this topic, you reminded me I forgot one step as finishing :)Reply

Usurpation is not so much different from name changes, though we need to be more careful not to usurp an account inappropriately.
In general my procedure is as follows:
  1. validate the requests: usurping user's identification, being usurped user's reaction (or non-reaction)
  2. rename the being usurped account, e.g. on Special:Renameuser User:JohnDoe to User:JohnDoe (usurped)
  3. rename the usurping user account to the being usurped account, e.g. again on [Special:Renameuser]] User:JohnDoe2 to User:JohnDoe
  4. re-create the original account of usurping user to avoid future confusion, if possible, and block it.
If you have a question, feel free to drop it here. Cheers, --Aphaia 21:48, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikiquote interlanguage communication edit

Hi, I'm Nemo from the Italian language Wikiquote and I'm writing you (via a bot) because you're an administrator of Wikiquote in this language; please excuse me if you've received this message more than once.
The simple thing that I want you to know is that Wikiquote has an official mailing list, Wikiquote-l, which can be used to communicate and discuss matters which interest all Wikiquotes. This mailing list was last "advertised" about three or four years ago, before many of us joined Wikiquote, and is currently almost not participated at all by Wikiquote users and very low-traffic. I ask you to subscribe, to participate in discussions and to write about your Wikiquote.
I love Wikiquote, as you probably do, and I think that we should be proud of what we do here, share our experiences and good practices to make Wikiquote better and raise awareness of it.
I remind you that Meta-Wiki is the best place for Wikimedia projects coordination, and it contains several pages about Wikiquote, and specifically this talk page which can be used to discuss about Wikiquote if you don't like mailing lists.
I hope that this message has been useful for you. Cheers, Nemo (write me) 10:10, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Renaming, கலை to Kalaiarasy edit

Mainly, I'm a Tamil wiki contributor and I created the account with a username in Tamil. I had problem in using the Soxred tool 'cos of this Tamil name. Besides, I felt that it would be nice to have my username in English (that everyone can read), and thus asked for renaming in ta.wiki. My username was then changed from my old username கலை to my new username Kalaiarasy (that is my first name) in ta.wiki.
Even after the renaming, I faced a few problems and have been advised to change the name in all wikis which I'm linked to. So, I made a request in Wikimedia, Meta-wiki at Steward requests page. They helped me changing my name in wikis which don't have the local bureaucrats and asked me get the renaming locally in wikis which have the local bureaucrats. So, I'm making the requests in those wikis and the local bureaucrats complete the renaming procedure. Can you please do my renaming in en.wikiquote too?. Thanks in advance.--கலை 23:47, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Time to close Request for Checkuser after over one month? edit

Regarding Wikiquote:Requests for checkuser/BD2412 (posting notice to all bureaucrats except for the candidate in question):

  1. Most Requests for Adminship run for one week.
  2. Most Requests for Bureaucrat run for two weeks.
  3. Wikiquote:Requests for checkuser/BD2412 = has been open for over one month, diff.
  4. The Request for Checkuser Wikiquote:Requests for checkuser/BD2412 has failed to meet Wikimedia Checkuser Policy requirements. It does not have at least 25-30 support. It does not have 70%-80% consensus to promote.
  5. Can the request be closed at this time as unsuccessful?

Bot flag request edit

I have made a bot flag request some time ago for user:CarsracBot. Could you please tell me how long I have to wait until the discussion is closed. My bot is blocked until the discussion is closed and I guess that giving a botflag to a blocked user is not what you or some else does. I normally wait until the block ends, because I think that is very rude to ask for extra right for an account when it is blocked. Carsrac (talk) 02:18, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

CU question edit

Now that you're backish, are you going to try to get your CU flag back? I'd prefer it if we could local checks performed. EVula // talk // // 15:31, 22 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for late reply ... I'm not uncertain it is realistic for us at the English Wikiquote to keep local checkuser capacity at this moment in view of both community size and checking action necessity. But if it is the community consensus for the latter part at least, I'm ready to offer the service, while I've never been so active as in those days. --Aphaia (talk) 10:31, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

An important message about renaming users edit

Dear Aphaia,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
