Luca (2021 film)

Luca is a 2021 American computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios, for distribution by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film stars the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, Emma J. Berman, and Saverio Raimondo. It was released on Disney+ and in certain theaters on June 18, 2021 and then DVD and Blu-ray Disc on August 3, 2021. Luca was later re-released in theaters on March 22, 2024, paired with a short film, For the Birds which was first shown in 2001 alongside Monsters, Inc..

Dialogue

Daniela: Luca! Where have you been?

Luca: Uh…. [thinking] Don’t say surface. Don’t say surface. Surface. [covers his mouth with his hands]

Daniela: What did you just say?!

Lorenzo: What's wrong with your foot?

[Luca looks down, one of his feet is still human and screams in horror]

Daniela : Luca. [Luca stops his nightmare] Gonna tell us where you were?

Luca: Uh….

Grandma: It’s my fault. I sent him to look for sea cucumbers.

Luca: Right. Sorry, Grandma, I couldn’t find them.

Daniela Paguro: Mom, his life is maybe a little more important than your snacks.

[Gramdma shrugs]

Luca: Thank you.

[The scene transitions. Luca with Alberto watches into a wall.]

Alberto: This will be a breeze. Just don’t get wet. [He starts to his march past]

Luca: Uh…

[Luca strides to follow him he stares at two fishermen were walking]

Luca: Actually, this town seems a little crowded.

Alberto: Hey! Silenzio, Bruno. What’s wrong with you, stupido?

Fisherman #1: Huh?

Fisherman #2: [scoffs]

Luca: Huh! It worked.

Alberto: See? You just gotta follow my lead. [As he marches again]

Alberto: [over his growing jealousy of Luca spending more time with Giulia and Luca possibly going to school with her] Uh, Giulia, your school, does it take all kinds of people? I mean, what if some of them were not human?

Luca: Alberto…

Alberto: What if some were-- Oh, I don’t know, sea monsters?

Giulia: Sea monsters?

Alberto: I doubt your school would even accept sea monsters, right?

Luca: [laughs nervously] Ah, that’s a weird joke, [angrily] Alberto.

Alberto: Yeah, I know. It’s kinda hard to imagine. So, let me just show you! [dives in the water]

Luca: No!

Giulia: [to Alberto] Come on.

Luca: Giulia, wait!

Giulia: We don’t have time to goof around. Huh? AAAAHH! [Alberto, now in sea monster form, rises out of the water, looking silhouetted with the sunset in a crouched, intimidating position; whimpers in fear] Help! D-Don’t hurt us!

Alberto: See? I knew this would...

Luca: [pointing at Alberto] SEA MONSTER! [Alberto gasps with a heartbroken and betrayed expression]

Luca: [at the island; asks what the markings on the wall mean] Alberto? What are those marks on the wall? Tell me what they mean.

Alberto: [sighs] I started when my dad left.

Luca: You were living here alone for that many days?

Alberto: [sniffles] I just stopped counting after a while. He said I was old enough to be on my own. I just thought that… [sighs] …maybe he’d change his mind. Honestly, though, I get it. He’s better off without me. You are, too.

Luca: That’s not true.

Alberto: Yes, it is. You’re not like me. You’re the good kid. [in tears] And I’m just the kid that ruins everything.

Luca: Silenzio, Bruno. That’s just the dumb voice in your head. You taught me that. And getting a Vespa? Seeing the world…

Alberto: JUST LET IT GO! OKAY?! Look, you and I should have never been friends in the first place!

Luca: Don’t say that. Alberto?

Alberto: GET OUTTA HERE! I’M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU AGAIN!

Luca: Okay, I’ll go. I’ll go win the race.

Alberto: What?

Luca: Yeah. Yeah! And then the Vespa will be ours! And we’ll ride away together!

Alberto: Luca, that’s crazy.

Luca: Well, maybe I’m crazy. TAKE ME GRAVITY!!!! [jumps off the tower]

Alberto: Luca! What are you doing?!

Luca: I’m okay. I’ll be back tomorrow. I’m gonna fix this!

Luca: I can't do it without you.

Alberto: But you're never without me. The next time that you jump off the cliff, or tell bruno to quit bothering you, that's me.

Luca: But how am I going to know you're okay?

Alberto: [hugs him] You got me off the island, Luca. I'm okay.

[in a post-credit scene, a ball of light from a figure's head floats through darkness. The light shines brighter on the figure. It is Uncle Ugo, swimming backwards]

Ugo: [closing lines] Some people think I'm mad to live in the deep. I think they're the ones, who are mad, not me, the one who's mad, it's them. It's a nice life. A simple life. It's away from the hustle and bustle, and all the stuff that you don't want. [eats a bit of food] Mmm! Whale carcass. Anyway, you're gonna have fun. You get to hear me talk. I can talk without stopping, sometimes for, maybe, 12 hours, and you get to listen, so you're lucky. [One of Luca's fish faces him] Well done.

[The fish swims away sideways]
