Archiving
editWhat do you think about archiving the VP? I feel a 336,504 byte page is somehow intimidating. What if we archived all the materials until this August except related ones to the ongoing discussion? I mean Image usage related discussions but if you think of some other ones, please point them out. Thought? --Aphaia (talk) 11:52, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Aphaia: Agreed. This is browser-breaking length. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 13:07, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- I see a potential problem if this means empowering one individual (or a BOT) to make all archiving decisions, without allowing any feedback from the community about things like how often content is archived, or how large the page is allowed to grow before it is archived. - The community is definitely allowed and encouraged to give feedback on when/how to archive threads. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:49, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- I have not seen an invitation to give feedback on when/how to archive threads. How long has the BOT been archiving threads here? Ottawahitech (talk) 21:59, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- There was a bot doing it in 2012: Wikiquote:Village_pump_archive_38#Archive_bot_working. It stopped working by 2018: Wikiquote:Village_pump_archive_53#Archive_bot? (in the interim, I created most of the archives by hand--see revision histories if you need confirmation). —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 22:03, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, I know that there was/is a problem with archiving in general at enwq, and I know that admins here have been trying valiantly to plug the dikes with their own fingers. Why not let the community help you? You may be surprised by how much crowdsourcing can achieve, if it is gently and constructively channeled.

- I think it's fine to make a proposal. If you want to post on the content page here and suggest that we change to archiving every 90 days or whatever, that's fine. Please make a proposal. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 14:32, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Searching for quotes and phrases
editOne should be able to type in a specific quote or phrase and then view all instances of these appearing on Wikiquote. Instead you get instances of every word in the quote or phrase, which results in a largely useless mess of links. Enclosing a quote or phrase in parentheses doesn't work. Can anything be done about this? It seems to me to be a fundamentally useful/important feature of a quote archive. 174.24.241.20 19:23, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Where can I find this?

Star Trek on war/X lengthy work of fiction on Y subject.
editif a particular work of fiction has a plethora of particularly "relevant" quotes pertaining to a particular subject, would it be permissible to give it a subsection? CensoredScribe (talk) 00:18, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

- Perhaps it best I erred and not waste any one's time with this trivial matter anyways, my apologies. CensoredScribe (talk) 00:59, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
Confusing category: Village Pump Archive?
editHello, I suggest that the category Village Pump Archive be removed from this page because it’s confusing: this isn’t an archive at all. @GreenMeansGo: What’s your opinion? ~ Josephina • Talk 2 Me 23:44, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Makes sense. GMGtalk 00:30, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
When will the pump be archived again?
editI noticed that archive 52 extends from 21 January 2018 to January 20, 2019, is the pump now only archived on a yearly basis? 84 current topics is quite a few to move through, and may intimidate people from using the pump and prevent cluttering it with even more, just looking at the archived pages for 2014-2016 it can be seen that the pump used to be archived about three times a year and the number of topics was always below 50. I don't know if a formal vote is required, but I think a return to form would be an improvement and we've "let ourselves go" a bit, since the last half of 2017. - It appears that archiving of this page is done manually. If so, why? Ottawahitech (talk) 14:31, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
