Create new Categories if existing ones get too large

Hi UDScott/2021 I wonder when a category is large enough to create subcategories? Whats the local custom? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 04:51, 21 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

There really is no hard and fast rule. My personal view is that I do not usually create subcategories until there are more than 5-10 pages within a category. ~ UDScott (talk) 14:25, 21 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Just to let you know I am suggesting a dozen at #shesaid. Ottawahitech (talk) 18:03, 5 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the suggestion

Thanks for the great suggestion at: Wikiquote_talk:SheSaid#Questions_about_images_on_WQ, and sorry for messing up the indents which was probably very confusing. Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 18:00, 5 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

category: Photo required

Hi UDScott/2021, I am coming across lots of people who do not have a photo on their WQ page. I was wondering if we already have a category category: Photo required and if not should one be created? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 18:08, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure I understand the rationale behind the question - why do you feel that a photo is required in the first place? This kind of requirement has never been in place as far as I know. Users are free to do so, but I don't think we want to mandate it. ~ UDScott (talk) 18:25, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
There are lots of reasons to include a person's photo with a page about them. One of the reasons is that it would help those users who are adding women to category:Women quickly determine if the page subject is a man or a woman. This is not always as easy as one would think because someone's name may not be enough. For example even when it is a familiar language, there are people who have a name such as Valerie which can be man's or a woman's name. sorry for the messy reply. Ottawahitech (talk) 20:38, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, but there may be many users who do not wish to have their photo online or to reveal their gender (or anything else about themselves). And as it is not a requirement of this project, I fail to see how it could be enforced (nor why it should be). I get why it might be helpful in some small way, but not why it is something that we would want to make mandatory. ~ UDScott (talk) 20:46, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Creating a category aking for a photo is hardly mandating adding a photo. Usually unless the photo exists on Commons it would not be added, I think? But I see your point and have to think about it some more. Ottawahitech (talk) 21:16, 27 January 2021 (UTC) BTW enwiki has/(had?) this cat. Ottawahitech (talk) 21:17, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ah, yes I was thinking you meant a user photo. But as to having a photo of a notable figure, that's fine. But again, not everyone wants to have an image on their page - but in the end, I'm neutral on it. ~ UDScott (talk) 21:35, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Edit war over the “Revenge of the Sith” page

This user, Christian M. (2016), is currently engaged in an edit war with another user, Eaglestorm, over the Revenge of the Sith page. Here is the history of how the war started:

https://en.wikiquote.org/w/index.php?title=Star_Wars:_Episode_III_–_Revenge_of_the_Sith&action=history

This time, Christian M. (2016) has gone too far with this war. So could you please banish him from Wikiquote as soon as possible and the war can finally come to an end? AdamDeanHall (talk) 03:21, 28 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Could you please take a look at Talk:Saṃyutta Nikāya, please? Thanks in advance. --Wiki13 (talk) 12:52, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm looking for a deletion and a protection from non-autoconfirmed users being able to create it. There is a LTA targeting the page, unfortunately. --Wiki13 (talk) 13:05, 2 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, got it. Keeping an eye on it (including other pages being recreated with the same content). ~ UDScott (talk) 13:09, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Merging into Impeachment of Donald Trump

Regarding the {mergeto|Impeachment of Donald Trump} tag at the top of the page of Second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, I can understand your desire to provoke discussion, but are Wikiquote articles presented for editors or for the reading public? I'm sure this is the wrong forum for this discussion, and since I am not disposed to debate, my complaint will surely be overruled, but I can only assume that editors could easily [control-end key] to the bottom of a page, search the "Category:Articles to be merged," or read the article, in their search to find problems that they can work to resolve; as opposed to placing hideous, repulsive, unattractive, uncomely, and unsightly warning images at the top of the screen, which no ordinary reader (customer) would desire, as a distraction from the article itself. ELApro (talk) 21:27, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

While I understand that you object to the appearance such a tag provides to a given page, convention has always placed these and other tags (stub tags for example) at the top of the page so as to make them more visible to users (and to spur some action or discussion, as I suggested in this case). This is even mentioned in the guideline regarding stubs (Wikiquote:Stub). I get that it may not be seen as the most attractive way to present a page by some, including you, but I would also maintain that the nature of a wiki is not to present a polished finished product, but rather to encourage participation by its community in maintaining the quality of what is presented. As such, I consider it important to highlight when there are discussions or work needed on a given page (and might I add, we have a strong need for more participation by users to address the many problematic pages or join ongoing discussions we have here). If you still disagree, feel free to raise the concern to the larger community or start a discussion on how the placement of tags might be improved. I, for one, do not find them as objectionable as you and believe their placement at the top of a page serves a purpose. Cheers. ~ UDScott (talk) 21:42, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Race

Hi, I stumbled across Race which seems to have changed meaning on WQ around 2015-2016 from race (biology) to race (competition). Unfortunately it appears that something got muddled somehow according to an edit I saw in Fascism that changed Race to Race. Do you know anything about the history of this article on WQ? do we still have the old version of Race somewhere. I am trying to disambiguate this and having trouble.

No hurry whenever you have the time. Thanks, Ottawahitech (talk) 01:13, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

No, I was not aware of this change, which appears to have been made here: [1]. The earlier versions are there in the history of the page and can be used to adjust the page as needed. ~ UDScott (talk) 13:33, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

George Orwell 1984 misquotes

I made edits to the 1984 misquotes and drew directly from his text to correct the misquotations. I answered each misquote in a line-by-line fashion and the quotes I drew were accurate to the word. I observed you reverted the changes I made to the misquoted version. Those quotes in the reverted version are not from the original text and do not belong in an official citing of George Orwell's 1984. - —This unsigned comment is by Johnwinstondarby (talkcontribs) .

The problem is that the edits you made were to the page for the film, not the book. As such, any quotes taken from the text are not appropriate for that page. While the film is based on the novel, it is certainly possible that its writer altered some of the quotes. If you feel the quotes on the page for the book are incorrect, it should be addressed on that page, rather than the film's page. ~ UDScott (talk) 13:53, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

General UDScott/2021:

Years ago (2008), you served my father the Post-Cyberpunk fiction genre by administering an Orderly Partition of the bloated Neal Stephenson page, creating separate homes for several of the Bald Bard's novels, now we beg you to advise us in our struggle against the Empire bloat of William Gibson quotes, which I admittedly set into motion. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, General Scott; you’re my only hope. Bridgman (talk) 15:25, 23 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

In plain language: do you think parts of William Gibson should be spun off, possibly with each trilogy of his novels getting a separate page, or is it still a manageable size? (Sprawl trilogy, Bridge trilogy, Blue Ant trilogy, Jackpot trilogy.) Bridgman (talk) 15:25, 23 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, the main Neal Stephenson WQ page, has grown larger over the years, but not nearly as large as it was when it included quotes from Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon and the The Baroque Cycle. If it has become too large again, I would be glad to assist in transferring quotes to any new pages set up for novels published since our last correspondence, which include Anathem, Reamde [not a typo], Seveneves, The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., and Fall; or, Dodge in Hell. Bridgman (talk) 15:25, 23 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I would agree that both of these pages have grown quite long - and appear to be ripe for splitting out some of the quotes for individual works. I just did similar for a few works from Cormac McCarthy just yesterday. Feel free to make similar changes to these pages and pull out quotes into new pages for the individual works. ~ UDScott (talk) 15:57, 23 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
UPDATE: I ran word-counts on the various Neal Stephenson quote pages: The Baroque Cycle 12,170; Cryptonomicon 6,006; The Diamond Age 4,231; Snow Crash 3,625; and everything else 13,970. The word counts within the "everything else" books range from 1,359 (Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.) to 2,454 (Anathem). Bridgman (talk) 18:27, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I'm in the process of "hiving" the William Gibson page now. So far, I've created a page for the Sprawl trilogy. Once I've copied the content of the other 3 trilogies into their respective pages, I will remove the original instances of the quotes I'm copying. That will leave the William Gibson WQ page lean and mean, but there's still a lot of material to mine from more of his short stories and all of his magazine articles. Bridgman (talk) 23:41, 23 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Searches for "Count Zero" and "Neuromancer" redirect to "William Gibson." None of the other WG novels have those redirects and none of the trilogy titles for that matter...I'm a little rusty on adjusting redirects. Bridgman (talk) 21:17, 24 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
No problem - I've adjusted (and added new) redirects to point to the appropriate trilogy page. ~ UDScott (talk) 12:51, 25 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Adding information on Numberphile

Dear UD Scott, I just created the page Numberphile. I've just added two quotes of James Grime on the video that is listed in the article. My task for you is to find more Numberphile videos and paraphrase their sayings onto the article. Please make a new section under the Quotes section of the page when you a=start a new video. Then you find words in the video and paraphrase them under the L3 section under the Quotes section. Rockstar Arianagrande (talk) 18:45, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please delete the page Category:YouTube channels because it is empty. The page Numberphile got removed from that category. Rockstar Arianagrande (talk) 18:51, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
No, I added that cat back to the page. And I've added an intro and some formatting to the page - but I doubt I'll be able to watch it and cull more quotes from it. Good luck with the page though. ~ UDScott (talk) 18:54, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
When will you find more videos on this channel add more quotes to the page Numberphile? Rockstar Arianagrande (talk) 18:57, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
As I said, I likely will not be able to watch the channel and find additional quotes. My limited time on the site is usually spent on many other pages and issues and unfortunately I cannot commit to working on this page. But again, good luck with it. ~ UDScott (talk) 19:10, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Please check my Numberphile article again to see what I have done and you can ask someone else to add more quotes. Rockstar Arianagrande (talk) 23:34, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

How I can delete by mysellf in this site?

I want to send me a template which is related to article deletion. Regards. --General electric p30ch (talk) 16:13, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

If a page qualifies for speedy deletion, you can post {{db}} at the top of the page, and an administrator will review it for that purpose in fairly short order. BD2412 T 16:15, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, can you please lock and protect the page Total Drama Action because anonymous users has been posting vandalism on the page. Persistent vandalism ([Edit=Allow only autoconfirmed users] (indefinite) [Move=Allow only autoconfirmed users] (indefinite))

Hi and... not sure why my edits were reverted

Hi UDScott. As an editor of long-standing and an admin at Wikiquote, you obviously have a better picture of what’s acceptable here than I do, but I can see no obvious reason for you to revert my edits at Mulan (1998 film). Since you left no edit summary am not sure whether it was for perceived vandalism or simply because you are fine with the page as it stands. Either way, I’m puzzled and would appreciate some sort of feedback so as to avoid having my future edits reverted. --Technopat (talk) 16:26, 25 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

I reverted them because I was not sure why the cast was removed - this is a standard part of our templates for films and TV shows. Second, I'm not sure why you had a warning about citing references. This kind of warning is used if TV show quotes do not source them to an episode of the show, but for a film it is not usually appropriate. The source is the film itself (except for any quotes about the film, which as usual require external sources). Hope this helps. ~ UDScott (talk) 12:29, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Quote Origin Help

Hello! I wanted to reach out and ask you something since I’m not sure who else can help me. I saw you created the Led Zeppelin wikiquote page, and I saw that initially there was some quotes on there that are now labelled as unsourced. I know it’s been over a decade since you first made that page so this is a long shot, but where did you find them in the first place? I’m primarily interested in the Robert Plant ones to narrow it down for you (and to narrow it down more, I’m interested in the one that says “No, I've never thought that I was gay. And that's not something you think. It's something you know“). I’ve spent several days trying to find the source for it, and that search took me here. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, I really appreciate it. Crashingzeppelin (talk) 17:46, 5 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I really have no recollection about those quotes - I'm thinking that perhaps at one time someone had created pages for the individual members of the band, on which these quotes were placed. But I cannot seem to reconstruct that trail either. I'm afraid I'm not really much help in finding any sources for these. I was more focused on getting the song lyrics onto the page. ~ UDScott (talk) 12:38, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

That’s alright! Thank you. Crashingzeppelin (talk) 15:26, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey, thanks for editing Zhiar Ali. Do you have any tips on how I can improve the format of the sources? I thought it's the same as enwiki. I did look at the citation page but did not really understand much.--Épine (talk) 15:09, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, what I meant by that is that we generally do not use a references section. We either place the source beneath each quote or if there are a few quotes from one source, we make a subsection and place that source at the top of the subsection (with an abbreviated title for the subsection and the link for the source just below the title). Also, since this is English Wikiquote, it is helpful (if possible) if sources in English are provided so that the quotes can be verified. Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 15:11, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the tips, I will try to add more English sources shortly. Do you have any reference pages I can look at regarding the sources?--Épine (talk) 15:19, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

What do you think should be the max LOQ for the show? they run between 40 minutes to an hour (first and finale). --Eaglestorm (talk) 17:38, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

To me, I would treat every episode differently based on its length - meaning that more quotes are permissible for the hour-long episodes. Usually when this occurs, you can add a note just below the episode title that explains its longer running time. ~ UDScott (talk) 14:37, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, can you take action against the users FunhausFrank's tr011, Geraldo Perez 2.0.5 and Bfdighsgduofisdf. They have been reportedly engaging in vandalistic behaviour towards my talk page and Korean Air Lines Flight 007. I tried to revert FunhausFrank's tr011's vandalistic edits, but he has not stopping and reverting my edits. Geraldo Perez 2.0.5, who is falsely masquerading as a Wikiquote administartor, is adding message to my talk page saying that I have been blocked with racist messages added on the reasons for being blocked, which is clearly an evidence of rogue user engaging in behaviour of vandalism. Six months by islands... and countries

Dear UDScott, you marked with the template «It is proposed that this article be deleted» a page that I worked hard and took the time to create: each quote was carefully checked in translation from Russian into English. The template contains the words «please edit this page». What exactly should I correct? Виктор Пинчук (talk) 05:26, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

I proposed it for deletion because it does not appear that the author or the work are notable enough to warrant having a page here. It's not that there are issues to correct on the page, but rather that it does not appear that this is a well-enough known topic (especially for English Wikiquote). ~ UDScott (talk) 12:38, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
The book written in Russian can’t be well-known in the English-speaking part of the world. I consider the topic “reasoning about meaning of life through the prism of long travels” to be significant regardless of the language section. If you have no complaints about the content of the text, then deleting the page due to the lack of widespread popularity of the work is not entirely right.Виктор Пинчук (talk) 19:31, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
But that is precisely why it should not have a page here. Please refer to Wikiquote:Quotability for more on when quotes should be included here. Also, in Wikiquote:Wikiquote, you will see (within the section What is Wikiquote?) the following: We limit ourselves to quotations which are notable. A quotation can be notable because it has achieved fame due to its enduring relevance to many people, or because it is attributed to a notable individual, or appeared in a notable work. This does not meet this criteria for English Wikiquote since, as you say, its source is not well known in the English-speaking part of the world. ~ UDScott (talk) 00:14, 20 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure to what you are referring - can you elaborate? I thought all of this vandalism was now reverted (and all offensive comments hidden). ~ UDScott (talk) 13:19, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I'm just not seeing anything more that needs to be done. All the problematic edits listed there have been reverted and all the three users have been blocked. ~ UDScott (talk) 13:28, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
A lot of reverted edits still need to be deleted. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 13:31, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Not trying to be difficult, but I do not agree - I only delete (or more properly, hide visibility of) edits when there is something profane or offensive in the edit or the edit summary. I do not as a matter of course remove all edits resulting from vandalism if they do not include this. I see no further action that needs to be taken here. ~ UDScott (talk) 14:26, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Has been oversighted now, but you had only deleted one of three identical revisions. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 18:49, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

SheSaid

Hello; I just saw you are admin and I have noted you follow carefully my SheSaid babies. Can I orient them to you whenever they need help ? Such as review, advice, deletion ? Anthere (talk) 14:38, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes in general - I try to look at all new pages to ensure they are properly formatted, etc. I cannot guarantee I will see every new page, as there may be periods of time when I am away from the site due to real world issues. But I am happy to review things you alert me to. ~ UDScott (talk) 14:46, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

I would like to ask if there is a way I can compile stats of local Wikiquote contributions for different local languages for newly created Wikiquote articles and improved ones in the past 30 days especially getting the stats for women wikiquote. Please kindly help.Shoodho

Hi @Shoodho: (apologies to UDScott/2021 for butting into this private discussion)
It is not clear to me what of statistics you are looking for:
  • number of edits by WQ-page
  • number of edits by user-ID
  • What do you mean by "stats for women wikiquote"
  • pageviews
  • etc
Is your request connected to Wikiquote:SheSaid#Articles_created_or_improved_during_SheSaid_in_2021 in any way? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 19:36, 2 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Deleted talkpages on WQ (Facebook)

Hi UDScott/2021,

I was going to start a discussion on Talk:Facebook , but I hesitate because this page had already been deleted 3 times on WQ. I don't like creating pages that are likely to be deleted in the future. I often check something I wrote years ago and like to retain access to those pages. Historical access is one of the main reasons I enjoy participating on wmf-wikis.

BTW I don't normally tend to burden one admin with such a heavy topic, but since the WQ Village pump seems to have a limit on the length of time long-simmering discussions are allowed to continue, I trust I will not have the same problem on your usertalk.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance Ottawahitech (talk) 16:53, 2 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

I would encourage you to go ahead and create the page. The past iterations of it were filled with either nonsense or span. But if you're creating it with a legitimate purpose of discussion, there should not be any issues. Any problems in the future would likely be stripped off, but the page would not be deleted. Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 17:03, 2 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Potential good contributor no longer available on WQ?

Hi again,

I have been researching the contribution history at Women and happened to see this reverted diff. So I went off to google translate and got this interesting translaton from Japanese:

辮 誹 ー 辮 誹 ー (talk | contribs) (* English "Mr.", Italian "Signor", Chinese "teacher" can only be used by men. English "Ms.", Italian "Signora", "Signorina", Chinese "Taita" and "Small" can only be used by women. There are cases where both men and women have "san" as in Japanese, and "○○ -kun / ○○ -san" can distinguish between men and women. I hate it! That's why Japan is lagging behind women's social advancement, and women's discriminatory remarks occur one after another! ** [https://blog.goo.ne.jp/u- ...

However the editor that contributed this does not (no longer?) have a user&usertalk here, so I am unable to try and clarify their attempted edit source etc. Is there a way to revive it?

Sorry again for intruding on your time. Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 19:01, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I'm not quite clear on what you are asking - is it because the full site is cut off in the above? If so, the full address is available in the diff that you shared. Or is there something else you need? ~ UDScott (talk) 20:44, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Category redirects

Hi UDScott! What happens with category redirects here? Do they get deleted or templated with something like {{category redirect}}? On my home wiki it just depends on the situation, so I thought I'd ask you.--Ferien (talk) 20:43, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, when categories are moved, we use the category redirect (see Category:Minnesotans for example). ~ UDScott (talk) 14:08, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll fix the categories I moved now. --Ferien (talk) 15:55, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your edits please advise on how to correct a title name spelling.

Request:

Can you please protect my user talk page for about 2 weeks? I'm asking mainly because I have became a recent target of this guy creating multi-sockpuppets used to harass me nonstop to no end. DarkMatterMan4500 (talk) 20:20, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

I soft-protected it for two weeks - if this is not enough let me know. ~ UDScott (talk) 20:31, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Temporary page protection

Is it possible to protect the page for Ghostbusters: Afterlife for a short period so only registered users can edit it? There's a couple of unregistered users who have been altering the page with incorrect quotes. Giftheck (talk) 11:21, 4 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
