Talk:Freedom
The quotes about Freedom are also about Liberty, and the quotes about liberty are also about freedom. I think these articles should be merged. Binky The WonderSkull 18:44, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- "Свобода или смрт (freedom or death)" — is bulgarian revolutionary cry, not macedonian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayna_Popgeorgieva
- The terms for Liberty and Freedom (political) or Freedom (philosophy) have often been used and abused in various ways. There are usually distinctions that are made between Freedom and Liberty, though often the meanings of different words and the differing ideas represented merge and mingle. The pages should probably remain separate for convenience in looking up words, as pointed out in Talk:Liberty. I will remove the merge tags and do a bit of cleanup on the articles. ~ V for Victory 04:44, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Free speech
editI propose that quotes about free speech (freedom of expression) should be separated from the main article. Quite often when people speak of freedom this is the freedom that is implied, and it would be good to separate the two. Alternatively there can be made a subsection of this existing article for such quotes. Beta M 18:52, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Incorrect attributed quote
editFreedom is another word for having nothing else to lose. Clint Eastwood
I do not doubt that Clint Eastwood said this, but he was definitely quoting someone else (maybe unconsciously). I know this quote from the Janis Joplin song 'Me and my Bobby McGee' which Mr Eastwood definitely knows. Probably the quotation is not originally Janis Joplin's either. I guess this is much older.
- Corrected attribution; earliest I could find was the songwriter. BD2412 T 17:07, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Oh, my nerves are bad tonight, yes, bad. I fear freedom. I, above all, fear the freedom that is above all feardom.
- Giannina Braschi, United States of Banana (2011)
- As long as man is a slave to another power, he is not free to serve God with mature responsibility. He is not free to become what he is—human.
- James Cone, Black Theology and Black Power (1969), p. 39
- Excepting those who see only a boisterous celebration, this macabre work [El entierro de la sardina] makes people uncomfortable. Malraux comments that the figures are not men and women in fancy dress, they are butterflies hatched for one brief moment from a larvel world, the revelation of freedom. Goya's picture therefore symbolizes not a dream fulfilled so much as a desire to be free.
You might think ironsmiths, bricklayers, stable hands, knife grinders, peasants, chambermaids, and others with little to lose would protest the heavy hand of El Deseado. Wrong. Spaniards trapped at birth at the bottom of the heap were fiercely conservative. As Klingender explains, the more these people suffered, "the more fanatical did they become in their loyalty to Church and crown, which they associated with their memories of a better life in the past." They saw in Ferdinand the restoration of Spanish values.- Evan S. Connell, Francisco Goya (2005) p. 194
