Jeremy Clarkson

I was baffled to see that you have deleted this article as "not sufficiently notable". Mr Clarkson is one of Britain's best-known television personalities and motoring journalists. I see from the logs that he has had articles deleted before from lack of sources, but notability should not be an issue. Would you support me if I created a new article, every quote being sourced from the website of the BBC or a major newspaper?--Ole.Holm 17:14, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes, you are correct - I accidentally selected the wrong reason. But the deletion was made because the only content on the page was "Geez, why can't I access history of deleted page? That's so lame." Hello, great UDScott! I'm new here and before I just "jump into things" I wanted to ask a few questions. I'm asking you because I was told you are a great leader here at Wikiquote. Here's the Q's dog:

1.) Are there any special rules or traditions I should know of?

2.) Is there a type of hierarchy here I should know of?

3.) Any ideas of where I should start?

UDScott can you show me the light?

HI UDScott, I am in the process of transcibing the audio from The 99p Challenge (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/The_99p_Challenge) gameshow, I saw that you had put the stub label on it & thought best to contact you as a WikiQuote Guru. Have you ever heard the show or have any experience with quoting Gameshows. I need some guidance on how best to approach this. Looking at the page now each episode is a section & a whoever entered that stuff has put a page break for each 'round' and selected 1 or more quotes.

I would suggest that you continue with the episode approach - but you should base the number of quotes on the limits set at WQ:LOQ - which would translate to 2 quotes per episode for a half-hour show and 5 per episode for an hour show. So that would mean that the first episode needs to be trimmed already. Hope that helps. ~ UDScott 01:16, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Not a problem - I didn't get any sense of notability from the intro that was there - and at that time I didn't have a chance to look into it. That's what is nice about the prod - it gives some time to correct or research a page before it is subject to deletion. Just to let you know I can't trim the page because if I remove the memorable quotes by mistake the page might be nominated on a VFD or it might contain a prod that has the reason called unmomorable quotes. I rather let you trim the articles because you're the admin around here and you and your fellow Admins are the ones that know which quote is unmemorable and memorable.(StarWarsFanBoy 05:43, 14 February 2010 (UTC))

Look, all I am saying is not to dump a bunch of quotes that are not properly formatted and forcing me or others to do the work for you. If you are unwilling to do that, then your additions will simply be reverted. ~ UDScott 18:33, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Thats why we discuss on the talkpage of the Article you just reverted and on that talkpage I made a list of quotes to see if you can tell which quotes are very notable from that quote list I add to the talkpage. Why don't you just pick two of them, properly format them, and add them to the page. The point is not that admins are the only ones who can choose quotes. It's just that every couple of weeks, you've been dumping a bunch of unformatted quotes on the page, expecting someone to fix them for you. While the story is certainly in the news, Joe Stack himself is not someone who is notable enough to have a page here. And even if the community decides that he is, the entire "manifesto" should not be reproduced here. Having a list of references (in Spanish no less) does not provide sources for the quotes - specific citations are need so that people can verify the accuracy of the provided quotes - this is especially true for a living person. Joe Strummer

I was about to start a Strummer page, but hesitated because you deleted it twice.

I recently saw the Strummer biographical documentary The Future is Unwritten, and heard him say "it only makes sense in the moment." While I have never been a Clash or Strummer fan, I perceived his organizational abilities to be phenomenal, and this insight by him resonated with my attempts to organize information, particularly my Spiritual Darwinism.

I also heard a telling yet less admirable quote by him that went something like "I would never steal a friend's money, but I would steal his girl."

IP block

Well, I did intentionally make that block - this was during the nearly constant reappearances of the same user or users and I had been performing such a block on each. If you disagree, I am fine with it - I didn't even think about it being an IP address rather than a user name, but I assumed it was the same individual based on the content added. ~ UDScott 15:24, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm new to Wikiquote. I'm not sure exactly how the policies and guidelines differ from Wikipedia, but I thought I'd include a page about this controversial figure given his unorthodox views on race. A couple of questions - are there any guidelines on which quotes should be included? Does Wikiquote have a similar concept to notability with Wikipedia? In answer to your questions: yes, there is a notability concept at Wikiquote (I believe this person meets the threshold) and yes the quotes should be listed in chronological order. As for what quotes to include, it's a bit subjective, but the quotes should be of a nature that they stand on their own as something memorable and are not just used to fill a page. For example, even if the person is undoubtedly notable, everything they say is not necessarily worthy of inclusion - as an example, it would be pretty pointless to quote Abraham Lincoln were he to describe his favorite recipe. No worries - I wouldn't say they are mistakes so much as a learning curve. It wasn't a bad start, just needed a little refining. Take a look at the templates for the different types of pages and look at other pages to get the lay of the land. Congratulations on becoming a Wikiquote sysop and bureaucrat. I noticed you deleted my page: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Ideas_without_execution_are_hallucinations

I am new to posting on Wiki sites and am trying to learn the protocol. I notice the reason given was:

Speedy deletion: Housekeeping as described here: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/WQ:SD

From reading that page I see that "Housekeeping" includes: "Non-controversial maintenance tasks such as temporarily deleting a page in order to merge page histories, performing a non-controversial page move like reversing a redirect, or removing a disambiguation page that only points to a single article."

Can you please explain in more details the reason for this deletion? This seems an important quote I have heard from several sources and I am trying to track down the source. I heard it was Thomas Edison though I could not find it on that page: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison so therefore I created this article to track it down, until the actual author is found, at which time it would move to that page. I also posted this as a discussion here: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Talk:Thomas_Edison

Is that the proper place for this rather than creating a separate article? (Hopefully you won't delete it over there too! :^) Can you please explain? Again I am simply trying to learn the protocols.

Perhaps using the 'Housekeeping' reason was not entirely correct, but in the end, having a page for a single quote for which no source or even author is entirely known is not the right way to go. Instead, it would be good to post something on a place like the Village Pump or even the Reference desk. Also your posting on the Thomas Edison talk page was a good move as well, and perhaps someone will find a source. That's fine, but without those words being sourced somewhere (for example cited in a newspaper or magazine article), there is no way to prove that he actually said them. How to enter the person description when there's also a page on Wikipedia?

I'm not sure I completely get your question, but to redirect a page, you just need to use the following: #REDIRECT[[xxxx]], where you fill in the xxxx with the target page. As for the introduction where the person is described, that is usually taken from the wikipedia page (usually a shortened version of the WP intro - no more than a sentence or two, since if someone wants to know more, they can simply go to the WP page, which is linked. I need your help.

There seems to be an edit war going on in Thomas and Friends and Shining Time Station. In the former, the user continues to add the wrong lines, and in latter, the same user removes an episode even though there is no limit to how many episodes per Wikiquote article. Hey Scott, Not sure what else do I need to do in order to keep the new entry I have made on Uri Meiselman. He's not the biggest star in Israel, but he does appear in Hebrew Wikipedia under his Album entry. http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%90%D7%91%D7%A8%D7%9E%D7%A7

My PROD tagging was based on my inability to verify the quote or the notability of this person. That's not to say that I am not wrong on this (which is why I used PROD instead of outright deletion). What is needed is a better source - a link to a site in English would be ideal. See if you can find something like this and then the tag can be removed. That page was deleted months ago, so I decided to collect some of his quotes on my page and then I recreated the page today, which is the eighth anniversary of his death :'('''''' (R.I.P. Joe). I hope it is now "eligible" to "stay" on Wikiquote because Joe really deserves a page here. I'm sorry if I made you work hard, but I'm new to Wikiquote style and formatting. From now on I will follow the formatting style and layout of Joe's article.

No problem - it was actually a well thought out page and will surely stay now. I just tried to clean up a little bit of the redundancy in the sourcing notes and make it a bit more visually appealing. I also removed the bibliography section (not that what was cited is not good, but rather that it is better placed on his wikipedia page than here).
