Jurist redirect edit

Hi Kalki/2023,

I noticed that a long time ago you redirected Jurist to Jury. I believe this redirect should be removed since the word Jurist has no connection to juries. I hope I am making sense?

Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:15, 10 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have now made the redirect to Law — I have not yet checked if that is entirely appropriate to all the pages currently linked to it,. ~ ♌︎Kalki ⚓︎ 00:21, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for all the work you have done on enwq over the years, including the daily Quote of the Day which you seem to be shouldering all by yourself. Ottawahitech (talk) 23:47, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Kalki/2023: As I said above you have worked hard for many years on the daily Quote of the Day. However, in my opinion, the choice of an image with a very prominent swastika on the front page of wikiquote, does not do you , or any of us, credit. But you already know my views on this topic, sigh... Ottawahitech (talk) 00:47, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I consider attempts to absolutely forbid or condemn any use of any notable symbols historically representing various forms of fascism, authoritarianism or tyranny, even in conjunction with statements clearly and strongly critical of these or any other forms of idiocy and idolatry "built on the most flagrant lies", are themselves forms of idolatrous error or censorship with which I myself strongly disagree. The quote by the very notable social psychologist sociologist and philosopher Erich Fromm (who happened to be a German Jew who had to flee Germany because of the rise of Nazism) from his work The Sane Society, promotes the growth of intelligent rationality and broad ranges of discerning ideas, rather than foolish "escapes from freedom and into a new idolatry" of those who would promote blanket suppression of any expressions, or even indications of fact, deemed to be inappropriate by any of the many diverse modes and forms of authoritarianism to their particular timid or bold preferences or agenda. I was going to respond with just that statement, but will also quote in full the quote of the day which mentions a few historically famous forms of tyranny, at least two of which were also indicated by the image used:
Fascism, Nazism and Stalinism have in common that they offered the atomized individual a new refuge and security. These systems are the culmination of alienation. The individual is made to feel powerless and insignificant, but taught to project all of his human powers into the figure of the leader, the state, the "fatherland," to whom he has to submit and whom he has to worship. He escapes from freedom and into a new idolatry. All the achievements of individuality and reason, from the late Middle Ages to the nineteenth century are sacrificed on the altars of the new idols. ...built on the most flagrant lies, both with regard to their programs and to their leaders.
In conjunction with this I used an image I have long perceived to be representing a vigorous rejection of various forms of ruthless dictatorships, by whatever ideological idiocies they seek to establish themselves. ~ ♌︎Kalki ⚓︎ 00:42, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

enwq history edit

Hi Kalki/2023

I happened to find the talkpage of, I think, the first ENWQ admin, and in it a reference to you, which, I think, means you were the second admin ever in enwq. Just wondering if this is correct?

Do we have a page somewhere documenting the history of this wiki? Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 01:28, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I became the second admin here, after Nanobug (talk · contributions); at this point I do not know that there currently is a dedicated project page to the history of the project, and other than the archival pages, perhaps only various summaries of various sorts on various user pages. ~ ♌︎Kalki ⚓︎ 00:17, 2 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Quote of the Day for 1 April, 2023 edit

Hi there, yesterday I added a suggestion for Quote of the Day for 1 April, 2023 (it was a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt). I see now that my suggestion has been replaced with a suggestion from you. Can you please explain the process for QOTD? From reading the pages it appeared that there was a process for making suggestions and ranking them but in this case there was no ranking, just a replacement without discussion? TIA. MurielMary (talk) 23:39, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

The Eleanor Roosevelt quote you suggested had actually already been used as the QOTD in 2021 on October 11. You seem to have learned from the suggestion pages the proper ways of adding suggestions to the date pages — I had considered your latest proposal, but could not find an original source of the remark, nor a secondary source I found reliable enough at this point, and used another.
Yesterday I had left on an all day trip after picking the QOTD for April Fools Day, and not been back to my computer until a few minutes before picking the next QOTD a short while ago, when I noticed your remarks.
The quotes have been selected from among suggestions provided or added in response to current events (usually the recent deaths of notable persons or other significant events). The current system of ranking of suggestions, usually with some relationship to the date or to recent events, was devised in the earliest years of the project, and you seem to have used that on your latest suggestion — but the QOTD should also be adequately sourced.
Thanks for your suggestions, and the Zola one you made is also one I would like to eventually use, if it or a similar translation can be adequately sourced. ~ ♌︎Kalki ⚓︎ 00:44, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

The Protocols and The Plot edit

I was wondering how much information from the page for Will Eisner I should add to the page for The Protocols of the Meetings of the Learned Elders of Zion, considering it is an unusually influential and unusually blatant piece of plagiarism. Attributing the author (Mathieu Golovinski) and including passages from the source it was plagiarized from (Maurice Jolly's The Dialogue in Hell between Machiavelli and Montesquieu), seem like obvious and non controversial improvements; however, should I also include Will Eisner's analysis of individual passages alongside those passages? I've never seen a page where individual quotes have their own about sections, however I'd be lying if I said organizing it that way wouldn't help readers more easily understand the true nature of this lazily written text's ignorance and evil.
Thank you for your time, should you be able and willing to respond to this question. CensoredScribe (talk) 15:30, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Reverted edit on Wikiquote - Martin Luther King edit

Hello @Kalki, thank you for making the changes it was an error.. I was translating the article in Hausa language and I was supposed to make the changes their not in English Wikiquote. Best Uncle Bash007 (talk) 13:36, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I realized that such had probably been the case. ~ ♌︎Kalki ⚓︎ 15:38, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Isn't the Obama quote too long? edit

Hi Kalki/2023 Thanks for adding this new quote. I was wondering if we are allowed to add such long ones here?

Thanks in advance. Ottawahitech (talk) 00:29, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

It was longer than I usually prefer, but various trimmed options I considered left out too much context, and I decided to go with this slightly trimmed version of his remarks.
My rather old iMac's display is suddenly misbehaving very badly today, and I sometimes can barely read or use the pages — and it looks like I will need to get a new mac within a few days — but I am struggling to do some final tweaks here before going to non-computrer tasks for the night. ~ ♌︎Kalki ⚓︎ 00:37, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Is this the English wikiquote or the American one :-) edit

Hi Kalki/2023, As I have already told you (I think?), I am very grateful to you for maintaining the main page of this wiki diligently for so many years. I know you are very short of (volunteer) time to contribute here, but in light of today's Biden quote as quote of the day, it seems to me that there are a lot more American-rah-rah quotes on the front age than, say, British ones?

thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:37, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
