Abuse filter issue
editHi deliriousandlost. I saw your grievance at Jeffq's talk page about the abuse filter. I am sorry that you were bitten by a false positive when you were only trying to be helpful. It is our fault because we are using the filter without having much expertise in how to use it well. (We are a small project without a lot of technical expertise, and the more experienced folks at en.wikipedia have been reluctant to share their knowledge for fear that outsiders would run amok and abuse the filter there.)
The suspension of autoconfirmed status is only temporary, lasting a random number of days up to one week. If you want to perform edits that require autoconfirmed status you can wait a few days, or you can ask a bureaucrat to manually confirm your account. In the meantime, I am going to tweak the filter so this will not happen again.
It is probably no consolation to you that this is only the second reported false positive since we began using the abuse filter ten months ago. I sincerely apologize for the unpleasant experience our bungling has caused. Please be assured that you are welcome to contribute here. ~ Ningauble 15:12, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I see that Ningauble has already replied to your request. I hope that helps. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 18:10, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well this is awkward; you two moved the conversation here and i would normally reply where it started to ensure comprehension of context should it be quoted :D
- Since Ningauble mentioned it was tweaked i just gave it a test. Result: No effective change.
- Warning: This action has been automatically identified as harmful. Unconstructive edits will be quickly reverted, and egregious or repeated unconstructive editing will result in your account or computer being blocked. If you believe this edit to be constructive, you may click Submit again to confirm it. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Page blanking
- As no diff is created and the details of the filter log are not visible to myself here is the proposed before
<!-- Schizombie --> <div style="float:left; border:1px solid #bbb; margin:1px"> {| cellspacing="0" style="width:238px; background:#f6f6f6" | style="width:45px; height:45px; background:#fff; text-align:center; font-size:14pt; color:#fff" | | style="font-size:8pt; padding:4pt; line-height:1.25em" | This user has a page on Wikipedia. |} </div><noinclude> </noinclude>
- This is the proposed after that is triggering the abuse filter.

- As you can see it is not having a net minus affect on the displayed content of the page. I am attempting removal of content that i put there as a temporary work-around pending the user's rename on ENWP. I also again tested the "click save again to confirm this edit" and as you can see from my log it fails.
- Having the expertise from ENWP is not always a good thing. There there are filters for any edits to some pages, some very quirky filters, and of course also some very proper ones. I was labelled as a "Possible tireless sock creating film pages of non-existing films" by a filter for creating an article on a TV movie that has notable cast members. :P One thing that is different is that on ENWP one can examine the details of their own or others' filter logs. Here is my ENWP abuse filter log. I reverted blatant vandalism for the third, created a good faith stub for the second, and messed up undoing an edit for the first one (something i then un-undid).
- I hope this helps you see some of the issues with the filter. Yeahs to me for being the second to report a false positive ;)
- To whomever found the quote from Joss Whedon re FOX forgetting to cancel dollhouse after season one, THANK YOU.

- I'm not very active on Wikiquote right now. I highly recommend you take this to Wikiquote:Administrators' noticeboard so that someone who is up-to-speed on abuse filters can help you with this. I would make one point: Wikiquote, like many non-WP projects, tends to have only a tiny fraction of the participation of the main project. This tends to lead to simpler processes and somewhat longer resolution times. I'm really not familiar with abuse filters at the moment, and Ningauble's post suggests to me that our admins might still be getting used to them. Post to WQ:AN and please be patient with us. Thank you. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 00:56, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
- I changed the filter so that it will no longer suspend autoconfirmation. I do not know if there is a way for the filter to examine the size of displayed text with transclusions, it is just looking at the wikitext. Since the renaming was confirmed here, I went ahead and made the edit at User:Шизомби for you. ~ Ningauble 16:37, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
