Talk:Starship Troopers

This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Starship Troopers page.

I added the cleanup tag because the page does not comply with the literary quotation guidelines: it sorts quotations by person rather than by chapter. Please see GtL and Wikiquote:Templates/Literary works ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 08:43, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

No offense taken. I just started editing on Wikiquote. I'll see what I can do. Palm dogg 09:06, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bolding

edit

It's really not a good practice to bold only certain parts of a quote. I understand that the point is to emphasize a certain section of a longer quote, but if that's necessary, you should really consider just using the shorter quote. When you bold something, you are usurping the writer's perogative to emphasize what he or she wants to have emphasized, and you thereby alter the quote. This is the equivalent to imposing a point of view, which (as I understand it) is a WikiProject no-no. (It's true that simply by selecting the quote you've exhibited a point of view, but that's really as far as it should go.) When people in argumentation add emphasis to an existing quote, they're usually careful to note this in some way -- such as writing "emphasis added" at the end -- because it alerts the reader to the fact that the quoters POV is being asserted. In this clean-up I've endeavored to remove all bolding.

Pictures

edit

I would like remove the picture which accompanies the quote "A soldier accepts personal responsibility for the safety of the body politic of which he is a member, defending it, if need be, with his life. The civilian does not." It doesn't add any particular informational value, is not illustrative - and it only shows couple of fans dressing up so it doesn't relate to the really to the quote. If a picture - one from the film would make sense - but then copyright would become a problem. Am waiting for a while and if no feedback I will remove the picture. 46.7.56.247 01:29, 19 July 2014 (UTC) M.Reply

Though the cosplay models are perhaps no more genuine manifestations of the ideas and ideals of Heinlein's statements than the actors in the film were, they are certainly no less representational of some aspects of the statement which captions the image, and thus the image is clearly relevant to the theme of the statement, and they are equipped with mockup guns similar to those used in the film. This is a significant statement, but as there are other significant statements which could be emphasized with images, I will probably add a few more. ~ Kalki·· 11:48, 19 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
They're certainly very jarring. Comes off like deliberate vandalization. 152.86.91.217 22:22, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
The images are of humans in military uniforms, such as are related to the story in both written and film versions; I do not perceive it extraordinary or extraordinarily jarring to illustrate a page on a military story with humans in related military uniforms. I also restored the statement of Daniel Daly which Heinlein quotes as the epigraph of the book. ~ ♌︎Kalki ⚓︎ 23:19, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
