Criminal Minds (2005–2020) is an American television show, airing on CBS, about an elite squad of FBI profilers that analyzes the country's most twisted criminal minds and anticipates their next move before they strike again.

The Fisher King (Part 2) [2.01] edit

Gideon: "The defects and faults of the mind are like wounds in the body; after all imaginable care has been taken to heal them up, still there will be a scar left behind." French writer François La Rochefoucauld

Reid: People tell me their secrets all the time. I think it's because they know I don't have anyone to betray them to. Except my mother. I... I tell her pretty much everything.

Morgan: Detective, I've seen kids missing for a decade and their rooms look exactly the way they did the day that they left. Parents don't just pack up their kids stuff and put them in boxes in the garage. Parents don't give up, ever. What the hell is going on here?

Randall Garner: Ask the question, I'll be healed and you may take the grail. Just ask the question, Sir Knight.
Reid: I can't.
Randall Garner: Heal me.
Reid: Mr. Garner, a fisher king wound cannot be healed by somebody else. It's... it's not a wound of the body. It's a wound of the memory, a wound of the mind. It's... it's a wound that only you can find, and a wound that only you can heal.
Randall Garner: Just ask the question.
Reid: There's only one question that matters, Mr. Garner. There's only one really important question. Can you forgive yourself?

Reid: "It has been said time heals all wounds. I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone." Rose Kennedy

P911 [2.02] edit

Hotchner: She runs the Crimes Against Children Unit in Maryland.
Morgan: Always wanted to meet her.
Katherine: Really? I heard she was a bitch.
Gideon: Nobody ever called you that, Katy.
Katherine: Well, not to my face.

Gideon: Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children."

Katherine: I gave up on him. A year ago, I gave up on looking for him – there were so many other kids.
Gideon: Katie, I'm sure you did what you could.
Katherine: Do you ever ask yourself how you make a decision like that? How you come to the conclusion that it's time to move on to the next kid? I mean, how do you give yourself that kind of permission? What's happened to that boy in the year I stopped looking for him?

The Perfect Storm [2.03] edit

Gideon: Mark Twain wrote, "Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel. He is the only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it."

Morgan: Put the weapon DOWN!

Reid: Wow. She obviously did nothing to protect Amber from the abuse. She... she feels betrayed by her mother and now receives extreme sadistic pleasure in watching the same thing that happened to her. Strange. In this case, the abused actually became the abuser.
Garcia: That doesn't happen a lot?
Reid: One in eight.
Garcia: We found the one.

Hotchner: Philosopher Khalil Gibran wrote, "Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars."

Psychodrama [2.04] edit

Haley: [discussing Jack's medical condition] At home with my mom. I didn't want him here while we were talking. Look, I know this job is important to you, but we're important, too.
Hotchner: You don't have to tell me that.
Haley: I don't want you to wake up some day in some random city and realize that you don't know your own son.

Hotchner: "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." Oscar Wilde

Greenaway: [reading the headline] Stripping Bandit. That's terrible. That makes it sound like the bandit's doing the stripping.
Reid: What would you call him?
JJ: Pervert.
Greenaway: Scumbag.
Morgan: I'd call him an ass.
Hotchner: Hey, focus, please.

Hotchner: "The basis of shame is not some personal mistake of ours but that this humiliation is seen by everyone." Milan Kundera

Gideon: Save one life, we save the world.
Hotchner: Yeah. Well, one thing that I didn't tell the trainees.
Gideon: What's that?
Hotchner: We do not get paid enough.
Gideon: You got that right.

Aftermath [2.05] edit

Gideon: Helen Keller once said, "Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it."

Hotchner: You tend to forget, don't you?
Gideon: What?
Hotchner: All the different moods on the plane. I think the mindset's different when the victims are still alive.

Reid: I thought maybe... you might want to talk.
Greenaway: Don't go all profiler on me.
Reid: Elle, you got shot in your own home, and then came back to the BAU like nothing even happened. Thinking you might want to talk isn't profiling, it's Psych 101.

Morgan: Oh, one last favor. Look up the words "sexy" and "brilliant" in that computer of yours, and tell me what you come up with.
Garcia: Look at that, it's me.
Morgan: You are a goddess, woman. Ciao. [turns off his phone and sees the women in the waiting room staring at him] It was a... it's a work call.

Hotchner: [after Lisa Blake's rape] Excuse me, how bad were her injuries?
CSU Tech: She's lucky, they're relatively minor.
Hotchner: Do me a favor? Don't tell her that she's lucky.

The Boogeyman [2.06] edit

Hotch: Plato wrote, "We can easily forgive a child who's afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light."

Greenaway: I really wanted to be a part of the team.
Hotchner: You were.
Greenaway: But when I needed the team, I was all alone. I was alone in the one place that I have the right to feel safe, and that's my home. Just like those women in Ohio who were attacked had a right to feel safe in their homes.

Garcia: Yeah, this is true. All complaints filed were false alarms, but then there is that matter of his missing wife.
Reid: Wife? What wife? When did she go missing?
Garcia: Almost fifty years ago.
Reid: No record of her ever being found?
Garcia: I got two words for you, my friend, Rear Window. That guy probably chopped that lady up into delicious, bite-sized little pieces. Think about it. She may have never left the premises. [whispers] She may still be in the house.
Reid: Garcia, I'm sitting here in the dark alone. Thanks.
Garcia: While you're waiting for a potential murderer to come home? Kind of dangerous. Kind of sexy.

Morgan: You really are afraid of the dark.
Reid: I'm working on that.
Morgan: You should work a little harder.

Greenaway: [after turning in her credentials] You know, when I first started this job, the sound of my phone ringing, a call from the Bureau, I used to get so excited. The blood would race through my veins. And now, that same sound, it paralyzes me. I'm not the same person anymore. That night at Lee's, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.
Hotch: Even though you killed someone?
Greenaway: I guess that's it, then. You know, when I first joined the team, I couldn't figure out why you never, ever smile. Now I think I'm actually gonna miss that.
[Greenaway exits Hotchner's office, picks up her box of personal belongings and leaves the bullpen]
Hotch: I'm gonna miss you too.

North Mammon [2.07] edit

JJ: Legendary basketball coach John Wooden said: "It's not so important who starts the game, but who finishes it."

Reid: You don't believe the girls are missing?
Sgt. Sikes: It's not really the kind of thing that happens around here, you know?
Gideon: You'd be surprised to know how many times we hear that.

Garcia: He who seeks the "Queen of All Knowledge" speak and be recognized.
Reid: Garcia, we're sending you some cigarettes.
Garcia: Why not a flesh-eating virus? It'll be faster and far less painful.
Reid: We need some butts rushed to the lab for DNA analysis.
Garcia: Oh, Reid... I love it when you say "butts." Send away, sugar. Bang bang for now.

JJ: "The ultimate choice for a man, in as much as he is given to transcend himself, is to create or destroy, to love or to hate." Erich Fromm

Empty Planet [2.08] edit

Gideon: Robespierre wrote, "Crime butchers innocence to secure a prize, and innocence struggles with all its might against the attempts of crime."

Reid: [referring to the bomber's phone call warning of an attack "where it all began"] So Seattle's "where it all began."
Morgan: We just need to figure out what "it" is and, off the top of my head, I can think of grunge music and overpriced coffee.

Morgan: Hey, Dollface, ready to work some magic for me?
Garcia: Challenge me, you beautiful behavioral analyst.

Gideon: I'd like to attach a protective detail for you Dr. Cooke, until we find the guy.
Dr. Emory Cooke: No, thank you.
Gideon: Excuse me?
Dr. Emory Cooke: Really now. Do I seem like the sort who would want to be followed around all day by a government goon squad? I don't think so.
[Dr. Cooke leaves as Morgan enters]
Morgan: Goon squad?
Gideon: Ever talk to someone who wants to continually show you he's smarter than you?
Morgan: [motions to Reid] Every day.

Reid: I need to stop by a bookstore and get a copy of Empty Planet. I want to reread it before we talk to the author. I haven't read it since I was six.
Morgan: Six? I was still riding my Big Wheel at six years old.
Reid: Do you mind? It will only take 10 minutes.
Gideon: To buy it or read it?
Reid: Uh... both, actually.

The Last Word [2.09] edit

Gideon: Elbert Hubbard once wrote, "If men could only know each other, they would neither idolize nor hate."

Hotchner: Mam, we've just been assigned your daughter's case. We're in the process of gathering information, but so far no witnesses have come forward.
Betty: Well around here guns go off like those damn car alarms, every 15 minutes. Nobody's stupid enough to talk, nobody cares.
Reid: We do.
Betty: You wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for them [gestures towards the children in the other room. [picks up newspaper and reads from it] "Heinous crimes against upstanding members of the community." Nobody writes about prostitutes being shot, because they won't admit they think they're cleaning up the place.
Hotchner: You're right. Cases like your daughter's usually go unsolved, the problem is people aren't looking for them, because they don't know that they're missing. Part of her job was to stay below the radar. Doesn't mean she was any less important.

Gideon: [to the Mill Creek Killer] If killing those women made you an artist, the things you did to them after they were dead, what does that make you? I mean, really, it just doesn't seem very artistic, does it?

Hotchner: Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Remember that all through history there have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they seemed invincible. But in the end they always fall. Always."

Lessons Learned [2.10] edit

Gideon: Dale Turner mused: "Some of the best lessons are learned from past mistakes, the error of the past is the wisdom of the future."

Jind Allah: Is it your intention, Mr. Gideon, to become a man of faith and revert to Islam?
Gideon: I am a man of faith. I have repented, I pray regularly, and I practice charity. I have never committed violence against you, so how is it that my faith would allow you to live and worship as you please, and yours would take my life and snuff it out?

Gideon: We receive comfort from our prayers.
Jind Allah: We?
Gideon: Human beings [pauses]... I say something wrong?
Jind Allah: You placed us on the same level.
Gideon: Aren't we?
Jind Allah: Well, here, I am thought of as less than human.
Gideon: And in your jihad, I am.

Gideon: Those people tonight... they were innocent. They never hurt you.
Jind Allah: They hurt me by existing.

Gideon: Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "In order to learn the important lessons in life, one must each day surmount to fear."

Sex, Birth, Death [2.11] edit

Reid: T.S. Eliot wrote, "Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act, falls the shadow."

Reid: There's nothing in the juvenile offender records.
Garcia: So you think like a high school kid.
Reid: I was 12 and I hadn't been though puberty when I was in high school.
Garcia: Okay, reset. I think like a high school student. You think like a profiler.

Prentiss: [to Hotchner] Well, I think politics makes people distrustful. I think it makes them hate themselves. I think it tears families apart, and damages people. So if there's nothing else, I would like to get back out on the street and find out who's killing these women. Sir.

Reid: T.S. Eliot wrote, "Between the desire and the spasm, between the potency and the existence, between the essence and the descent, falls the shadow. This is the way the world ends."

Reid: How many people's lives did I risk in the future?
Gideon: Profiles can be wrong.
Reid: What if it's not? What if next time he kills somebody?
Gideon: Then you catch him.

Profiler Profiled [2.12] edit

Derek Morgan: "All secrets are deep. All secrets become dark. That's in the nature of secrets." Writer Cory Doctorow

JJ: [while discussing evidence against Morgan] This is all just coincidence.
Det. Gordinski: A hell of a lot of coincidences.

Hotchner: We can't have people on this team who have secrets.
Gideon: Come on, Hotch. We all have secrets. Would you want us profiling you?

Morgan: You trying to say something to me right now.
Gideon: Only if you're hiding something. You need to trust us. Trust us enough to tell us about it.
Morgan: Gideon, it's not about trust. It's about having a little privacy. I got the right to keep something to myself. Look at us, man. We practically live together already.

Carl Buford: [about molesting Morgan as a child] Derek, I never hurt you. You could have said no.

Buford: I pulled you out of the gutter.
Morgan: I pulled myself out of the gutter! All the way to the FBI! I DID THAT!
Buford: Are you saying I had nothing to do with making you who you are?
Morgan: No, Carl. Actually, I'm saying that you have everything to do with making me who I am. Because of you, I'm somebody who gets to spend the rest of this life making sure that guys like you go down.

No Way Out [2.13] edit

Gideon: Aristotle said: "Evil brings men together."

Frank: [to Morgan] Beauty can cover a multitude of sins, but underneath we all look exactly the same.

Gideon: [opening a bag with a head inside] Who is this?
Frank: I believe the correct question would be "Who was this?"
Mark: You are a crazy son of a bitch.
Frank: We are all sons of bitches.

Reid: To get away with murder, you simply don't tell anyone.
Prentiss: The only people he told were the people he killed. And then he took from them what he needed: cash, credit cards...
Reid: I'm going to call Garcia and see if anything Catherine Hale owned was used after her death. [dials phone]
Prentiss: [to herself] And then he moved on to his next victim.

Frank: My hope is that one day you'll feel the way I do too.
Gideon: If I ever find myself feeling the way you do, I'll kill myself.
Frank: Call me first. I'd love to pick your brains.

The Big Game [2.14] edit

911 Operator: 911, what's your emergency?
Tobias: [whispering] I'm at 1527 Chestnut Drive.
911 Operator: I know where you're calling from, sir. What's your emergency?
Tobias: Th-They are too greedy. They have too much.
911 Operator: Too much what?
Tobias: Stuff, p-possessions, things they don't need.
911 Operator: Are you calling because these people have too much stuff, sir?
Tobias: No, I'm calling because Raphael... [as Raphael] That's enough. [as himself] I don't want to! [as Raphael] He's calling because Raphael is going to kill the sinners that live here.
911 Operator: I'm sorry, did you say somebody is killing someone? [no response] Sir? Hello? Hello? [a scream is heard in the background]

Prentiss: [watching Morgan dance between two women] Hey, Morgan, be careful. The one in the back could take your wallet!
Morgan: That's all right. I'll be a broke, happy man!

Gideon: Condemned murderer Perry Smith said of his victims, the Clutter family, "I didn't have anything against them, and they never did anything wrong to me, the way other people have all my life. Maybe they're just the ones who have to pay for it."

Reid: Referring to oneself in the third person is not uncommon for an unsub. Ted Bundy gave thoroughly detailed accounts of his murders, but he never actually admitted doing any of them, he'd just say, "the killer."

Reid: You all right?
Gideon: What?
Reid: You seem unhappy.
Gideon: I am unhappy. Tired of people using religion... to justify the terrible things they do.

911 Operator: 911, what's your emergency?
Tobias: [as Raphael] Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and then commit adultery with her, into great tremulation.
911 Operator: Excuse me?
Tobias: 222 Smith Road. Raphael must teach more sinners the way of the Lord. [hangs up, unplugs a nearby laptop, and takes it upstairs]

Reid: Actually, I, ah, really have to, um, you know, go.
JJ: You do?
Reid: For like 30 minutes.
JJ: Why didn't you say something in the car?
Reid: [to Tobias] Do you mind?
Tobias: My father doesn't like it.
Reid: Your father? You're like... 30.
Tobias: At what age should one start disrespecting the wishes of their parents?

Revelations [2.15] edit

Hotchner: "There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins." Ecclesiastes 7:20

Reid: Thank you for burning those...Keeping us safe.
Tobias: Don't try to trick me.
Reid: I would never try and trick you.
Tobias: You're a liar.
Reid: I'm not a liar.
Tobias: Lying's a sin.
Reid: I'm not a liar.
Tobias: This will be over quickly if you just confess your sins.
Reid: I'm not a sinner.
Tobias: We're all sinners.

Hotchner: [desperately] We're not getting any closer.
Gideon: Reid's brilliant. He'll figure out how to survive.
Hotchner: You know I always take advantage of Reid for his brain, but I never actually teach him how to deal with things emotionally.
Gideon: You lead by example.
Hotchner: What kind of example is that?
Gideon: [solemnly] He'll make it.

JJ: Any more sign of Reid?
Garcia: He just posted the last murder online. It had over 17,000 hits in the first 20 minutes.
JJ: I wanna see it.
Garcia: No, you don't.
JJ: Don't tell me what I want and don't want. [Garcia looks at her in surprise] If I can't watch this, I have no business being in the field.
Garcia: JJ, it's not a competition.
JJ: I, I need to see it.
Garcia: If you stop being affected by things you [pauses for a moment] lose parts of yourself, you know?

911 Operator: 911, what's your emergency?
Tobias: [as Raphael] 3514 Leavenworth. Raphael has killed them before their lies can free more sinners. [hangs up]

Hotchner: All right, everybody, right now, what's my worst quality? [silence from team] Okay, I'll start. I have no sense of humor...
JJ: You're a bully.
Hotchner: I'm a bully.
Morgan: You can be a drill sergeant sometimes.
Prentiss: You don't trust women as much as men.
Hotchner: Okay, good. I'm all these things, but none of you said that I ever put myself above the team because I don't. Ever.

Fear and Loathing [2.16] edit

Gideon: "From the deepest desires often come the deadliest hate." Socrates

Det. Ware: Don't you ever wish it didn't matter?
Morgan: It?
Det. Ware: Color.
Morgan: Judge me by the content of my character.

Hotchner: What the hell happened?
Jeff: I didn't know he was a cop. I saw this black car parked in front of our house and this black guy with a gun sneaking around the yard.
Hotchner: So you shot him?
Jeff: I was scared. I've got a family.
Officer Cale: So did Detective Ware.

Reid: "The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living." Cicero

Morgan: It's called empathy. And it's a good thing.
Reid: It's not. It's got me all messed up. I don't know how to focus, I can't do my job as well. So, what do I do?
Morgan: You use it. Let it make you a better profiler... a better person.
Reid: A better person.

Distress [2.17] edit

Gideon: "Our life is made by the death of others." Leonardo da Vinci

Garcia: Are you lonely in the Lone Star State? And are you wearing chaps?
Morgan: Only in your dreams, Garcia.
Garcia: Oh, not necessarily. I have Photoshop.
Morgan: Hey, hey, behave. Focus your little twisted mind for me, okay?
...
Morgan: And, Garcia? I'd better not ever find any Photoshop pictures of me.
Garcia: Oh, trust me, my vision, you will never find them.

Reid: [at the homeless shelter] Do you keep a list of everyone who comes through here?
Angie: We have a sign-in sheet but we don't force anyone to sign if they don't want to. Some who do don't even use their real names. Elvis eats here a lot.

Gideon: The first recorded war was 2700 BC. Probably earlier wars, but writing hadn't been invented yet.
Hotchner: Almost five thousand years of killing each other.
Gideon: One thing human beings have been consistently good at.

Hotchner: "If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace." Thomas Paine

Jones [2.18] edit

Gideon: Robert Kennedy once said, "Tragedy is a tool for the living to gain wisdom, not a guide by which to live."

Prentiss: How could their friends not see anything?
Morgan: It's like when the lion preys upon antelope.
Prentiss: You lost me.
Morgan: Well, that's because you, Emily Prentiss, have never been one of the antelope.
Prentiss: Oh, scratch that. You totally lost me.
Morgan: Okay, check this out. The antelope travel in packs; so the lion just sits and waits. Waits for just one of the antelope to break away from its herd. So when he's alone, vulnerable, and completely unprotected, that's when the lioness strikes, that's when she makes her move.
Prentiss: Wait a minute, her move?
Morgan: Prentiss, there's only one thing that's gonna make a straight man leave his friends on guys' night out, and it'll make him leave every time.

Morgan: Are you gonna tell me why you missed that flight to Galveston?
Reid: I already told you, there was no cell reception.
Morgan: Right.
Reid: What?
Morgan: Reid, any time you want to come up with a better answer, I'm standing right here.

JJ: You are the best ever.
Garcia: Aw, and you're the most perceptive.

Gideon: [to Reid] I have been playing at this job, in one way or another, for almost 30 years. I've felt lost; I've felt great. I have felt scared... sick... insane. I don't know... I guess the day this job stops gnawing at your soul and... hands, your hands stop feeling cold, maybe that's the time to leave.

Ashes and Dust [2.19] edit

Hotchner: "The torture of a bad conscience is the hell of a living soul" John Calvin.

Reid: Statistically, 94% of all serial arsonists are male, 75% are white and few, if any, are ever caught.
Prentiss: Few? You don't have a percentage?
Reid: 16%. Those 16% set 30 plus fires before they're ever apprehended. I'm trying to be more conversational.
Prentiss: Oh. It's not working.

Gideon: When he arrives, bring the fake bodies right past us, nice and slow. I want him to get a good look.
Lt. Vega: Remind me never to play poker with you guys.

Hotchner: I catch killers, I save lives, I'm a hero until my key hits my front door and then I'm just the father and the husband who's never there.
Gideon: Yeah, I got that one.
Hotchner: Here's the thing. When I'm home, I'm in this silent panic. Because I know that I have to be as good as I can as fast as I can. Because any minute, the phone is going to ring and my time is up. And that panic is exactly what I saw in Abby.

Hotchner: Gandhi said: "Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever."

Honor Among Thieves [2.20] edit

Emily Prentiss: An old Russian proverb reminds us, "There can be no good without evil."

Ambassador Elizabeth Prentiss: How are you enjoying your assignment to the BAU?
Prentiss: Well, enjoying is an odd description.
Ambassador Elizabeth Prentiss: Is it?
Prentiss: Well, we, um, deal with some pretty horrible things.
Ambassador Elizabeth Prentiss: I thought that was where you wanted to be.
Prentiss: It is, definitely.
Ambassador Elizabeth Prentiss: Then you do enjoy it.

Arseny Lysowsky: [to Gideon and Reid] Would you like something to eat? This borscht is exquisite. It's my mother's old country recipe.
Reid: Didn't you forsake all your relatives when you swore the Thieves' Code?
Arseny Lysowsky: I didn't forsake her recipes.

Gideon: Natalya was a part of this.
Morgan: How did I not see this coming?
Reid: How could any of us, man? She sought us out. We were so blinded by the fact that she trusted us, we never considered not trusting her.

Prentiss: "Happy families are all alike. Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Leo Tolstoy

Open Season [2.21] edit

Prentiss: (Brings beer and Brad from the bar) Ladies, this is Brad! A real FBI agent!
Garcia: Really?
Prentiss: Really!
JJ: No way!
Garcia: That's exciting! What's it like in Quantico?
Brad: It's, eh, quite impressive!
JJ: What department are you in?
Brad: That's classified.
JJ: Oh (winking at Garcia and Prentiss) it must be really tough keeping all those secrets.
Brad: It's a skill like anything else. Carpenters are good at building stuff, measuring. FBI is good at keeping secrets and kicking criminal ass!
Prentiss: Well, somebody has to do it! Oh, do you have to carry your gun and badge with you everywhere you go?
Brad: Affirmative.
Prentiss: Can we see it?
Brad: See what?
Prentiss: Your badge.
Garcia: Please.
Brad: I am sorry, that's...
Garcia, JJ, and Prentiss: Classified, of course.
Prentiss: (takes out her badge) Tell me Brad, does it look anything like this?
JJ: (takes out her badge) Or, uh, this?
Garcia: (takes out her badge) Or maybe this?
(Brad walks away)

Hotchner: Broken nose, and bark's embedded in his face; looks like he ran into a tree.
Morgan: Now how do you miss a huge tree?
Hotchner: Too busy looking behind you.

Gideon: "One man's wilderness is another man's theme park." Author unknown.

Gideon: Most hunters put animals out of their misery. The men we're looking for - they don't show any mercy.
Morgan: These guys take pleasure in watching their casualties die a slow death.

Prentiss: British historian James Anthony Froude once said, "Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself."

Legacy [2.22] edit

Hotchner: What's this?
Gideon: It's genius
Hotchner: You have Chaplin on film?
Gideon: My great-granddad was an accountant at one of the first movie studios
Hotchner: He lived in California?
Gideon: No, no, no, Chicago. Essanay Studios, closed 1920. Back then, 4 out of 5 movies made in US were made in Chicago. They closed down, they let my grandfather take a... , eh, a couple of extra prints home
Hotchner: They "let" him?
Gideon: Well, that's a family story, we're sticking to it

Hotchner: "Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity, nothing exceeds the criticisms made of the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed." Herman Melville

Morgan: What was it the Yorkshire Ripper said about his victims?
Reid: The women I killed were filth. Bastard prostitutes that were littering the streets; I was just cleaning up the place a bit.
Morgan: [about the unsub] He's a house cleaner.
Reid: Mission-based killer who believes his murders are helping society.

Capt. Wright: I can't believe he did this.
Hotchner: Well Detective Mcgee is pretty sure that these people are missing, sir.
Capt. Wright: [Scoffs] No Detective McGee is...
Hotchner: A little obsessive-compulsive?
Capt. Wright: Oh, you noticed that, huh?
Hotchner: Doesn't mean he can't be a good cop.
Capt. Wright: I thought assigning him to keep an eye on Skid Row would be harmless. Well, most of those people only cause trouble for each other.

Capt. Wright: Look, I'm sorry he got you to travel all the way here.
Hotchner: Sir, we're happy to help with the problem.
Capt. Wright: What problem?
Hotchner: Sir, 63 people missing from a localized area is unusual.
Capt. Wright: Are you kiddin' me? Bums, whores, junkies. Can these people even be missing?
Hotchner: You seem hostile to the idea that these people could be in trouble.
Capt. Wright: No, what I'm hostile to is a member my command recruiting the FBI to handle a case that I don't even believe is happening.
Hotchner: You know, the note her received could be an Unsub reaching out. It's not uncommon.
Capt. Wright: Or it could be another cop who's pissed off that McGee got an award.
Hotchner: Sir, this type of Unsub is relatively easy to catch. Nobody else has to get hurt.
Capt. Wright: As far as I know no one has been hurt.
Hotchner: Sir, I have some experience in this field, and I believe that your problem's only going to get worse.
Capt. Wright: Oh, well, thank you. we'll keep an eye on that. You have a safe trip home.
Hotchner: What if they were cheerleaders?
Capt. Wright: Excuse me?
Hotchner: Or teachers, or mothers? How did you put it, "Can bums even be missing?" Well, sir, they can. They can be hurt, they can be scared, and they can be killed.

J.J: Hotch, it's federal.
Hotchner: What?
J.J: If we want this case, it's ours. It's federal. This letter came from across the river, from Kansas City, Missouri.
Hotchner: Interstate communication.
J.J: Puts it in federal jurisdiction.
Hotchner: [to Captain Wright] Sir, this is now a federal case. I would like to retain Detective McGee as a consultant.
Capt. Wright: Whoa, whoa. You're not opening any investigations in my jurisdiction.
Hotchner: I don't wanna fight with you, even though this is a federal case. If we develop any information, I will come to you and your men will make the arrest.
Capt. Wright: And why would you do that?
Hotchner: Because that's how we operate.

Hotchner: We're going to provide a psychological profile of the man we're looking for. It contains some unusual, specific personality traits that someone out there is bound to recognize.
Gideon: Which will make him relatively easy to locate. Long-lasting, negative impression he leaves on anyone he might meet.
Morgan: We have a term for the killing behavior this unsub displays: cleaning house. Fixing what's wrong with the world.
Reid: He's deeply rationalized this behavior, and while he certainly knows the killing is wrong, he truly believes that he's doing the world a great service.
Morgan: Ultimately, this type of unsub becomes a loner. There won't be too many people that can still tolerate him. Now, if he does have a relationship at all, the person will not be his equal. It'll be someone subservient to him.
Reid: He'll be... fastidious, tending toward obsessive-compulsive disorder, and he'll have an overwhelming sense of indignation towards the things that he's judged to be wrong. He wouldn't even consider the reasons why someone might disagree with him.
Detective One: He sounds like a real jagoff.
Morgan: Exactly. Class "A" scumbag.
Prentiss: Detective McGee started noticing the disappearances a year ago. The Unsub probably had a stressor at this time. The death of a family member, or someone who had some semblance of control over him. Right now, no one has control over him.
Reid: It's probable that he isn't currently working after this many victims and the devolution that it brings, a job just wouldn't leave him time to practice his true calling.
Capt. Wright: Which is...?
Hotchner: A predator. A killing machine. By now, it's become all he thinks about.

Morgan: [to Mona, a homeless woman] Be careful, you hear me? This world needs all of its beautiful ladies, and that means you, too, Mona.
[Mona smiles and walks away]
Prentiss: You're a good guy.
Morgan: Ya think?
Prentiss: Yeah, you make the people around you feel good.
Hotchner: Well, he's no Charlie Chaplin.
Morgan: Oh, again with the Chaplin.
Prentiss: How'd you guys do?
Hotchner: Well, Reid got propositioned by every prostitute we talked to, but we didn't find anybody who thinks they'd seen the unsub.

Reid: It's odd. If the Unsub were out here, he'd stand out. You know, people would recognize the description.
Prentiss: So where does that leave us?
Capt. Wright: Right where I thought we'd were.
Hotchner: Captain?
Capt. Wright: You said this guy would definitely be memorable. You were adamant. So if no one out here remembers him, according to you, he doesn't exist.
J.J: That's not exactly what we said.
Capt. Wright: It's what you implied.
Hotchner: What do you think happened to them, Captain?
Capt. Wright: I told you, I don't think anything happened to them.
Hotchner: Oh, that's right. You think they all got houses and jobs.

Hotchner: Sit down. I've been standing on the other side of that glass thinking about what to do with you, Steven. And this morning I decided to save your life. You're gonna tell me where my killer is. You're gonna give me an address, and you're gonna tell me how to get inside without raising an alarm. You're gonna draw me a map if I need one. And you're gonna do this because he's never been nice to you. He constantly insults you and belittles you. He emasculates you and makes you feel ugly and stupid and worthless. Nothing you ever do is right. Never good enough. You hate him, Steven. And you're also going to tell me because you know you screwed up last night. He told you that your paramount concern was not to attract the attention of the authorities, and you know the punishment will be severe. Nobody knows better than you what he can do to people. I've spent a long time studying monsters like your friend, and I can promise you he's gonna do things to you that even you can't imagine.

Hotchner: "Nothing is permanent in this wicked world, not even our troubles." Charles Chaplin.

No Way Out II: The Evilution of Frank [2.23] edit

Man in line: You're killing me here. Make up your mind.
Gideon: [Picks up his phone] Hey, back off, pal.
Hotchner: [On the phone] What did I do?
Gideon: [To Hotch] I wasn't talking to you. [to the flower vendor] I guess roses.
Hotchner: Are you on a date?
Gideon: No, Uh, Hold on -- Hold on the roses, will you?
Hotchner: And you didn't tell me?
Gideon: Tell you what? I'm not on a date. I'm just buying flowers.
Hotchner: For who?
Gideon: Old college friend. Hotch, tell me something, do roses say the wrong thing?
Hotchner: What do you want to say?
Gideon: Welcome, Hi, Good to see you, sorry I'm so damn late.
Hotchner: Ah, roses say more than that.
Flower Vendor: Face buddy, you want some action... it's the roses.
Hotchner: She's right.

Gideon: Hey, Hotch, you're the best Unit Chief I know.
Hotchner: Jason, I'm the only Unit Chief you know.

Gideon: "I choose my friends for their good looks, my acquaintances for their good characters, my enemies for their good intellects." Oscar Wilde

Hotchner: You've not seen what I've seen.
Erin Strauss: You chose the BAU.
Hotchner: True. I enjoy my work, even when in the pursuit to understand why a person feels the compelling need to brutally torture, murder, and dismember a child. Mother, father, entire family. The unsubs devoid of any morality, humanity, remorse, when caught often come to believe we're the only ones who understand them. And they're right, we do. Otherwise, how could we catch them?

Gideon: I'm coming in.
Hotchner: No, do that and this investigation moves inside an interrogation room and by the time the cops catch up we're going to be looking at more dead bodies. He's going to change who he goes after, he has to. We know who Frank is, we don't know the why - you help us find out the why and we'll catch him.

Garcia: [talking to herself while waiting in her car for Gideon] Nervous whistle. Stop it. Everything is... everything is cool, Garci. Gorgeous tech kitten found in lonely, dark parking lot, throat slashed ear-to-ear. Horrific. Tragic. With the very files of one of the most prolific serial killers ever. Tonight he remains at large, the blood of Quantico's finest...
Garcia: Oh God! Oh my God!
Gideon: Drive.
Garcia: You're right, drive! Yes drive! Drive where?
Gideon: Just drive.
Garcia: Just drive, just drive...

Prentiss: Why did you leave Frank? What changed?
Jane Hanratty: He did. Frank changed. He changed just like Agent Gideon said. And he was so angry with Agent Gideon because he knows Frank better than anyone else, and Frank knows that, too.

Gideon: Sarah was a doctor. She was a mother of three boys.
Frank: Hello, Jason.
Gideon: She worked and ran a treatment center for patients with terminal cancer.
Frank: Do you know the birder's term "twitching," Jason?
Gideon: She dedicated her life to easing the pain of others.
Frank: The pursuit of a previously located rare bird.
Gideon: You took the lives of hundreds. All because your mother was a whore?
Hotchner: Mary Louise Breitkopf. Single mother, German immigrant, lived on the upper east side of Manhattan. She gave birth to her only son, Frank Breitkopf, a bright but ultimately strange boy. A boy that only a mother could love. His needs were such that even the three jobs she worked didn't provide for this special child, a child she wouldn't let out into the world. And when she turned to the world's oldest profession, the boy witnessed every terrible visitation.
Gideon: You're not a rare bird, Frank. Nothing special about you. You're common, pedestrian... boring.

Hotchner: Once again, the team had battled a monster; and won.
Erin Strauss: The future of the B.A.U is not in the balance here. The residual impact as a result of the investigations into the crimes and criminals you pursue is. Every cause has its effect.
Hotchner: You think I don't know that?
Erin Strauss: I believe you are no longer effective in your post.
Hotchner: The modern furniture, the strategically placed magazines, the framed diplomas, the art on the wall, are all in conflict with your family photos. You have three children, but you favor the middle one, your son.
Erin Strauss: What do you think you're doing?
Hotchner: Of course, you love all your children; but not like your son.
Erin Strauss: That's enough.
Hotchner: The bonsai you obsessively nurture is to compensate for feelings of failure as a mother.
Erin Strauss: Agent Hotchner! I said that is enough. My position is not in question here. As your superior, I am questioning your ability to lead your team.
Hotchner: My team? Let me tell you about my team. Agent Morgan fought to protect his identity from the very people who could save him. Why? Because trust has to be earned, and there are very few people he truly trusts. Reid's intellect is a shield which protects him from his emotions and, at the moment, his shield is under repair. Prentiss overcompensates because she doesn't yet feel that she's a part of the team. She needn't worry. Every day, Agent Jareau fields dozens of requests for our team and every night, she goes home hoping she's made the right choices. Garcia fills her office with figurines and color to remind herself to smile as the horror fills her screens. And Agent Gideon in many ways is damned by his profound knowledge of others. Which is why he shares so little of himself yet he pours his heart into every case we handle. I stand by my actions and by my team. And if you think that you can find a better person for the job, good luck.
Erin Strauss: Agent Hotchner...
Hotchner: How do I know you favor your son? I'm good at my job.

Erin Strauss: I put you in the BAU. I knew how badly you wanted it. Everyone did. You were never exactly shy about letting us know. But there were those who didn't think assigning you to the BAU was a good idea. They thought you were too reckless... I believed in you, however. It's time to pay back the faith I had. Your team is in trouble. They've lost sight of the big picture. I believe they are reckless and, at times, out of control. It's time for Agent Hotchner's career to come to an end. And if you want to stay in the BAU, Agent Prentiss, you're going to help me make that happen.
