Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel

edit

Muammar al-Gaddafi Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. -I think that needs a fixing.

The quote is properly attributed to Samuel Johnson on the page, and not to Muammar al-Gaddafi who is credited with stating the quote above it. ~ Kalki (talk · contributions) 00:30, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I would be more interested in a chronological arrangement of quotes. Ash Carol (talk) 04:30, 14 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Quotes which do not use the term nationalism do not belong here and should be exported to other pages. Or if they are viewed to be indirectly related, should be put in a 2nd section.

  • I am by heritage a Jew, by citizenship a Swiss, and by makeup a human being, and only a human being, without any special attachment to any state or national entity whatsoever. - Albert Einstein, in a letter to Alfred Kneser (7 June 1918); Doc. 560 in The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Vol. 8
  • If you think in terms of people divided up into countries, you won't follow me. The idea of countries is going by the boards. Young people are getting wonderfully uprooted and they're too strong to get sucked into this 'country' crap. - Buckminster Fuller, quoted in "The View from the Year 2000" by Barry Farrell in LIFE magazine (26 February 1971).
  • Sow but one seed of primal evil in the moral soil of a nation, it will grow to be a tree as broad as the sky,—to take fruitfulness from the earth wherein it is rooted, and to cover it instead with barrenness and gloom.- Henry Giles, reported in Josiah Hotchkiss Gilbert, Dictionary of Burning Words of Brilliant Writers (1895), p. 427.

Starting to do that. Ash Carol (talk) 04:37, 14 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

I am certainly not so much a rigorist in adherences to absolutist idiocies as many are inclined to be, but can accept some of the quotes moved to that section were only tenuously related to the subject of nationalism, and might be removed altogether with little objection, but others very clearly are related to the subject, and I do not accept that a quote MUST use the term nationalism or nationalist to be clearly about nationalism, and though I was already dressed to go on an excursion, and was just checking in briefly here before leaving, noticed some significant censorship of ideas and statements of Albert Einstein, I will review the situation further before doing leaving. ~ Kalki·· 12:22, 26 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
I just moved one quote by Einstein which was clearly on the subject of nationalism which he touches upon more explicitly using that word in a couple other statements, back to the text, and a couple others by others, as well, and moved the rest here, in the subsection below, for further discussion or debate as neither using the term nationalism, nor necessarily primarily about the subject. Some might tenuously be retained, and I would have little objection, but others are more arguably primarily focused on other qualities of human thought and behavior. ~ Kalki·· 12:45, 26 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Courage, of all national qualities, is the most precarious; because it is exerted only at intervals, and by a few in every nation; whereas industry, knowledge, civility, may be of constant and universal use, and for several ages, may become habitual to the whole people.
    • David Hume, Of National Characters, part I, essay XXI (1758)
  • Our hearts where they rocked our cradle
Our love where we spent our toil,
And our faith, and our hope, and our honour,
We pledge to our native soil.
  • God gave all men all earth to love
But since our hearts are small
Ordained for each one spot should prove
    Beloved over all.

  • One Image had two quotes by two authors (Einstein & Tytler)... i removed the Einstein quote and put it along with more text for more context in another image.
  • Old on right:

Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind.
~ Albert Einstein

Patriotism always exists in the greatest degree in rude nations, and in an early period of society.
~ Alexander Fraser Tytler

  • New on left:

Patriotism always exists in the greatest degree in rude nations, and in an early period of society.
~ Alexander Fraser Tytler

Asked if he sees himself as a German or as a Jew, Einstein replied, "It is quite possible to be both. I look upon myself as a man. Nationalism is an infantile disease... measles of mankind."

Hope that's ok with everyone... if not, i trust that you'll make whatever changes you think are best. cheers Om777om (talk) 22:30, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
