Citiing sources
editThe purpose for citing sources on Wikiquote is to allow readers and editors to verify the material. Unlike refereed publications, we have no edtiorial board; like Wikipedia, we use instead reader verification of material.
I've noticed two problems with your citations of Slavoj Žižek's Iraq: The Borrowed Kettle that make it difficult to accomplish this. First, you aren't always including specific enough information, like page numbers or even just chapters. This requires folks to read the entire book to verify a quote, which practically guarantees it won't get done. (This is not a reflection on the work, but rather the time needed to accomplish an otherwise small task.) It would help greatly if you could cite the page numbers these quotes are found on.
Second, you are adding multiple bulleted quotes but providing only a single source line under the last. It may be obvious to you that this means all three are from the same book, but I can assure you that it looks more to the regular Wikiquote reader that the other quotes are all unsourced. Someone will eventually come along and move them to "Unsourced" sections. Each quote must have a distinct source, preferably as specific as possible. It is not necessary to repeat all the details of a source; one can use forms like "Žižek, Iraq" (or maybe "Žižek, Kettle") with the page number for subsequent quotes. But one should always keep in mind that quotes may be moved around, so it doesn't hurt to provide the full source information for each one. (One alternative is to use the w:Wikipedia:Footnotes system, which requires one full citation and simple HTML ref tags for subsequent cites, but that is not yet in common use here and has a bit of a learning curve. I'd be happy to answer questions about this if you are interested.)
Anyway, I hope you find this information useful. Thank you for your contributions. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 22:50, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
