Protips

edit
  1. Turn on subtitles, this makes easier the transcribing process.
The subtitles can also be read in source form in the GCF store "portal content.gcf", in portal\resource. It's called closecaption_english.txt.
  2. Try putting the quotes in chronological order.
  3. GLaDOS says a lot of stuff, you may wish to separate things by "chapter" (level). try listing trailer and stuff she can say at any time (don't break camera stuff) before the chapters though. -Aknorals 16:32, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Careful with subtitles, though, they're not perfect. For instance, at the beginning of the last chamber, GLaDOS clearly says "The Enrichment Center is required to remind you that you will be baked, and then there will be cake." (as listed here too) but the captions say "The Enrichment Center is required to remind you that you will be baked [garbled] cake." Hard to say which version is funnier. There are one or two other minor discrepancies in the captions, so just use them for assistance, not as the final word. 82.95.254.249 17:32, 26 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cake sphere

edit

Should the cake sphere's quotes be formatted like that? I'm pretty sure they're separate sentences, and not just one. 76.24.76.172 19:26, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

The captions for the sound(s?) are pretty long, and most sentences appear at the same time, so I would assume it's okay to leave it as it is. --Darthkillyou 00:18, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Cake" sphere

edit

It isn't cake sphere. It's crazy sphere. You can find that in the GCF files. —This unsigned comment is by 84.251.152.203 (talkcontribs) 17:37, 30 November 2007.

Not entirely. The closed caption file calls it "portal.glados_core.crazy", but the sound files for it are named "escape_02_sphere_cakemix-*.wav" though. Also don't know if it should be on the main page and if so, in what format, but here's all its lines, separated with slashes. They're sorted by the numbers in the file, which should be chronological.

  • One 18.25 ounce package chocolate cake mix. / One can prepared coconut pecan frosting. / Three slash four cup vegetable oil. / Four large eggs. One cup semi-sweet chocolate chips. / Three slash four cups butter or margarine. / One and two third cups granulated sugar. / Two cups all purpose flower. / Don't forget garnishes such as: / Fish shaped crackers. / Fish shaped candies. / Fish shaped solid waste. / Fish shaped dirt. / Fish shaped ethyl benzene. / Pull and peel licorice. / Fish shaped volatile organic compounds and sediment shaped sediment. / Candy coated peanut butter pieces. Flush the toilet

edit

At the beginning of the game, if you flush the toilet a turret-like voice says "Your business is appreciated" Done.

If you're trapped in some room, GLaDOS says something and free you:

The quote you get when trapped is "Through no fault of the enrichment center you have managed to trap yourself in this room. An escape hatch will open in 3.. 2... 1." However, I don't think this is a "cream of the crop" quote worthy of inclusion in the article. Rulesdoc 18:01, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, flushing the toilet it will say "Your business is appreciated" But it hardly seems noteworthy...

Excessive quoting.

edit

Just a reminder of what Wikiquote is not We don't want or need every word of the turrets or GlaDOS from the game. Selected quotations, the cream of the crop, is ok. A transcription of every word is not. -- Greyed 23:33, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

As for your views on quoting Portal cannot have enough quotes, as it is a small game and taking out the "insignificant" quotes would make it look like a stub article. PatPeter 20:31, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Copyright violations trump stub. No one will be sued for stubs. Furthermore, no, it would not. We do not need every word that the turrets say. They're not that important. -- Greyed 21:34, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I just removed some of the in-game quotes that, quite frankly, weren't that interesting. "Mind the gap" doesn't make any sense on its own, and isn't nearly as representative of the game and/or GLaDOS as, say, "In dangerous testing environments, the Enrichment Center promises to always provide useful advice. For instance, the floor here will kill you. Try to avoid it." EVula // talk // 15:40, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm inclined to agree that there's still an excess amount of quotes in this article, compared to how many quotes have typically been listed for just one single game. Also, I'm sort of concerned about the "Cake Recipe" section and the "Still Alive" section. I'm not too sure the entire cake recipe is something that would belong on Wikiquote, and also, wouldn't listing the entire lyrics for "Still Alive" be considered a copyvio? (By the way I'm Zidane2k1 on Wikipedia, I just don't have my own account here yet.) --71.137.8.194 06:05, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I support the removal of the cake recipe and the song. I'm not sure about the other deletions, but I won't revert them as opinions may differ.--Cato 06:49, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have reverted this article to Sceptre's 22:54, 1 August 2008 (UTC) version, which removed a huge amount of quoting. I would recommend that anyone who honestly believes that so much quoting is not a blatant copyright violation make their arguments here before restoring this material. As it is, based on the typical amount of original, meaningful dialog that can be found in electronic games, the length of this article may still be copyvio-bait. Continued efforts to use this article as a transcription of much if not most of the dialog from this game, instead of only a select set of pithy statements notable to non-fans of the game, may result in the article being tagged as a copyright violation, which would require that it be rewritten from scratch. Please focus on only the very best, not everything but the kitchen sink. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ummm...

edit

Why was the contents menu removed and why has it not been reinstated?

Things to do:

  • At the end of every quote give a reference as to where in the game it took place, so that we can always keep them in chronological order.

Link to the German article

Hello, there The German article has nothing to do with the game portal. Could please someone delete the linking?

Mess Up's

edit

Hi Everyone. GLaDOS messes up sometimes. like f-f-f-f-f-fling fling -fling yourself!!! Should these be included? or how about when you take a camera off the wall. that should be included. thanks

Missig quotes from the final fight

edit

Some of my favorites are still missing. During the final fight there's a comment for every destroyed "GlaDOS-part". Favorite: Something like the moral- or ethics-CPU. The comment nicely illustrates the history of the other employees. "It was installed after I flooded the Enrichment Center with the deadly neurotoxin to make me stop flooding the Enrichment Center with the deadly neurotoxin" (Something like this. Don't remember exactly)

Mud in the Cake?

edit

I have checked the entire closed captioning file and have played the game, and I don't remember there ever being mud in the list. Am I just mistaken?

Excessive quoting, again

edit

Can we please edit down the newest revision instead of restoring an old revision? Although the page is in dire need of shortening, picking some old revision and overwriting all work done in the meantime is not the way to go. This loses formatting, corrections, links to translated pages, etc. Instead, edit the newest revision and delete uninteresting quotes from it. – Vpsilon 18:11, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The following remarks are copied from User talk:Ningauble#Portal:

I undid your redoing of Sceptre's "copyright" revision to Portal. What Sceptre did was to restore a very old revision of the page, overwriting grammar fixes and links to translated pages added in the meantime. To fix copyright issues, please edit down the newest revision so that not all this work is lost. – Vpsilon 11:20, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Can you please lock the Portal page? I've tried to contact Sceptre via his talk page, but he continues to restore outdated revisions. Although I agree that the page has copyvio issues, it's impossible to resolve them in a constructive way when Sceptre's overwriting everything. – Vpsilon 15:09, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I undid your Portal revisions, again. Please see Talk:Portal (game) and reply before changing it. – Vpsilon 18:16, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
There's a reason why I reverted to an "outdated version": the long version is a near-complete transcript. It violates Valve's copyright. There is no fair use defence for the long version. End of. Sceptre (talk) 22:48, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agree completely that the long version is indefensible. What I disagree with is restoring an old revision to fix it. The long version should be shortened by editing out less interesting quotes, so that the best quotes remain. – Vpsilon 08:44, 10 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

End of copied section.

Any reversion to the long version will be reverted without discussion. Copyright adherence is a Foundation policy and editors are empowered to enforce it by any means necessary. And in any case, editing down will result in a page nearly identical to this one. And why not restore to an old version? The game script hasn't changed, even with the Portal 2 ARG last year, so we don't lose any new content. Will (talk) 16:56, 10 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The version you are restoring is chock full of spelling mistakes which have since been corrected. It is a gigantic waste of time to do this work all over again (case in point: the "Wall graffiti" revision following your latest reversion contains a correction). Also, the newer versions are more structured, sorting the quotes under "Test Chamber 01", "Test Chamber 15", etc. Please, fix the copyright issues in the proper way – by building upon the work of others, not by overwriting it. – Vpsilon 10:54, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
This puzzle game is noted for its short length, so we should definitely stick to the standard limit of 3 quotes for a video game. More quotes should only be included if they are shown to be widely quoted in print, and citations are provided.

For now, I strongly suggest that persons interested in this article pick your three favorite quotes, correct any typos, and dispense with the rest. It does not take a gigantic effort to copyedit a small number of quotes. Otherwise I will pick three myself, and they will probably be the wrong three. Do not continue disruptively re-adding excessive quantities of quotes: everyone agrees that it is too much. ~ Ningauble 14:18, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I should point out that that particular limit is controversial; everyone on the talk for LOQ, even you, agrees that it's probably too strict (including BD2412, who is our resident IP lawyer). If I have to pick three: "speedy thing goes in; speedy thing goes out", "shall not be mourned", and "not even a full time employee". If we don't count the graffiti, that is; if we do, I'd subsitute "The cake is a lie" with the last. Will (talk) 23:19, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Old Long Version!

edit

Excuse me if I'm doing this wrong, but this is the first time I'm editing a wiki... The old version with ALL the quotes where my fav! I have been taking quotes from this site and posting them one by one on my Facebook. Its great to have all the quotes handy. You are always looking for that one you cant find... IMO, Revert back to the long one sorted by chambers, and fix the copyright issues you seem to be experiencing. I now saved the long one on my PC in case some idiot deletes it...

The problem lies with the length of the page in the first place. If we include too much of it, it violates copyright, so we must show restraint. Nobody is an "idiot" for adhering to copyright policy. Elecbullet (talk) 03:13, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
