English dub only? edit

Hi. I'd like to know if it's cool to add quotes from the fansubbed japanese episodes that haven't aired in the US yet or if we should keep it strictly to quotes from the English dub. I already noticed there's a quote from Uchiha Obita that can't have come from the US english dub.

I don't know if translated quotes are worth it as they won't reflect what the english dub says later on. But I would like to add some.

Phorque 18:27, 6 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The english dub normally screws up the meaning and often changes it entirely so that it can fit the movements of the mouth. The fansubbed versions are often more accurate to the actual Japanese, which is the true quote, not what Viz makes them say. In fact, I would move to get rid of anything that isn't in the manga, since otherwise it is not canon.

Maito Gai edit

Should Maito Gai's name be changed on this page to Might Guy as it has been on nearly every other Naruto page? 67.81.118.118 03:14, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yo, the real name's thanks to me... I may not be logged in so sorry if it won't tell you who I am... but I couldn't take looking at Might Guy. I'm currently trying to fix all the other naruto pages now.

According to one of the special books (I think it was Hiden: To no Sho), the name IS Might Guy. Maito Gai is just the same thing with a Japanese accent. --Alexie 03:28, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes you are right, it is the same thing. However, I as the true deffinition of Otaku (one who is obsessed to an unbeliveable point) feel that that's almost the same as saying "Well it's not a kyuubi, it's a nine tailed fox, one's just Japanese." Again I will stress the almost in that sentence, as we are on the English wiki boards I understand the need to Anglicized it. I guess I'll stop my crusade of fixing the names here too. I have one final request, there is one actual erorr in the article. The name Hyuuga, Neji and Hinata's family name in fact has two "U's" in it. So I'll keep the Anglicized order so long as you give Hyuuga it's second "U". Thanks, and if you were wondering here are some sources for the double "U" info: http://home.wanadoo.nl/debbie.kiki/ http://www.willvolution.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=90&sid=5dcac08c2467dd6d8b684c4256fd8b4d http://www.narutofan.com/index.php/content-character%20biographies,hyuuga%20neji

Although you're correct about Hyuuga having two Us, you're over-looking something. In the English version of the manga, it is spelt with a ū which represents "uu". So technicaly, either way is correct. Another thing is that Might Guy is supposed to be Might Guy, not Maito Guy. Maito Guy is just a fansub and, I believe, mistranslation. I'm going to go through the page and change the names of the characters from their Japanese versions to their English ones. // PoeticDecay 16:40, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
actually, you are wrong. It IS Maito Gai. In Japanese, there are no separate consonants besides "n". All consonants are followed by a vowel, as I said, except for "n", so there is absolutely no way to spell "Might" without an "o" at the end and there is no way to spell "might" literally since there is no symbol for "ght", but this can be done phonetically, resulting in "Maito". That IS his name. Not Might. The same goes for "Guy". It must be spelled "Gai" since that is the only way to spell it sounding like "Guy".

Haku quotes edit

There should be a section for Haku. He has a lot of notable quotes. Especially, the monologue about dreams when he's in the mirrors. - Brian

NPOV edit

Can someone fix this piece of NPOV-less crap?

You do know that "POV" means "point of view", right? I don't see how it's possible to have something written in a POV way on Wikiquote. // PoeticDecay 21:07, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Scratch that. I know what you are talking about. It should be fixed now. // PoeticDecay 21:07, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

No hinata quotes edit

shouldnt there be quotes on hinata she has said some pretty notable things

I added some quotes from Manga chapter 98. Any additional quotes would be good.

Naruto: Shippuu-den edit

Now that Shippuu-den's started, are we making a seperate section for that? I notice that Naruto himself at least already has a couple of quotes from post-timeskip/Shippuu-den/Part 2/whatever you wanna call it.

It's fine the way it is. Naruto's still Naruto, you know? If you want to add a quote from Shippuden, simply add it under the character's name. // PoeticDecay 00:34, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
You know what? I take back what I said earlier. I heard some pretty notable quotes from Shippūden and thought that it might be a good idea to make a page for it after all. Quotes from Shippūden can be seen here. // DecaimientoPoético 18:56, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup edit

This article is a horrible mess. It purports to be about not one, but two sets of creative works, and makes no apparent distinction between them. It follows no obvious Wikiquote formatting guidelines except bulleting individual quotes, which is only accepted (for now) in films, not in TV shows or comic series. And a complete lack of specific sourcing (i.e., episode, issue/page) leaves no reasonable way to verify any of the quotes.

I ask the regular editors of this article to review Wikiquote:Templates and its subpages for specific formatting guidelines, including how to organize TV and printed-matter quotes, and do some serious reworking of the article. Thank you for any work you can contribute toward this effort. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:49, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have restored the {{cleanup}} tag for this article. I appreciate that PoeticDecay added a lead section and did some basic cleanup, but the problems of undifferentiated manga vs. TV quotes and the complete lack of specific sourcing (i.e., print issues and pages; episode titles/names, placed at least in chronological order) seem to have been ignored. (To make the sourcing problem explicit, I have moved all quotes under a standard "Unsourced" heading.) These are critical requirements to make it minimally reasonable to allow editors to verify quotes. I ask the editors of this article not to remove the cleanup tag again until these issues have been addressed. Thank you for your assistance. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 21:49, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
You said something about referencing the quotes. How should we go about this? Should we break it up by episodes, like Dragon Ball Z? By manga volumes? Give me some ideas, and I'll gladly help where I can. The only fear I have, though, is that the page will grow excruciatingly long and most computers won't be able to handle the 150+ kilobytes of quotes. // DecaimientoPoético 00:38, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
The first problem is that this is an article about not one, but two creative works. It should either be split into two articles, divided into two main sections, or otherwise have the material separated into two clear parts — one for the manga, one for the TV series. (There have been some experiments with a single article that includes a common-quote section and individual sections for where the works differ, but I don't believe they are working very well. I suspect the 2-article method is probably the best way to ensure integrity of material.)
Once this basic question is addressed, we can follow the guidelines at Wikiquote:Templates. The TV series is easy, in that we have very specific guidelines at Wikiquote:Templates/TV shows. The manga is more problematic because Wikiquote:Templates/Literary works is still focused primarily on individual books, in which one need only cite an edition and page number in the source line. Folks have been experimenting with formatting and sourcing periodicals like comics. Two methods I've seen have been:
  • Following TV-show dialogue format, as shown at Firefly (TV series)#Serenity (comic). This can be used for dialogue and individual quotes. Instead of ordinary source lines, the article is divided into sub-sections by issue, with the dialog presented in chronological order. (We should ultimately find a way to note page numbers in this format, since they are obvious and typically unambiguous, unlike timecodes, the nearest TV and film equivalent, which can vary considerably based on the media used to identify them.)
  • Adapting book format, as suggested in Groo the Wanderer. Given the quantity of quotes in this article, it would probably be necessary to use sub-sections for each issue as well, with the source lines showing only the page numbers.
I'm sure there are others that I haven't noticed yet. Energetic editors can make a contribution by helping us to develop guidelines. The major challenge for manga or any other medium/genre is to provide a means to show the exact quote and a specific reference (source) for where to find it, so that anyone can verify it with a copy of the cited work at hand.
The third problem is that, once we've organized the quotes, we have an opportunity to gauge whether we are violating copyrights through excessive quoting. Currently we have an informal guideline of limiting ourselves to 3-5 quotes per installment for episodic works, with rare allowances of up to 8 quotes. (This does not guarantee protection against copyright complaints — see Wikiquote talk:Copyrights for why — but it is at least a minimal attempt to rein in some of our outrageously excessive quoting. Wikiquote is not a transcription service for any creative work, mostly but not exclusively for legal reasons, so we try to focus on a very select set of the best quotes of a work.) I suspect that we will have this problem in this article as well. Reasonable organization of the material will allow us to fix any excesses we have.
Note that avoiding the organization will not protect this article, either. Several articles have been mercilessly slashed or even deleted, sometimes by Wikimedia Foundation folks, because of their blantant copyright violations. If we editor-fans of these works cannot contain our enthusiasm, it will be done (brutally!) for us. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 01:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fansubbed vs. English Dubbed edit

I was wondering whether or not fansubbed quotes should be changed to the English dubbed quotes when the English dubbed episodes come out. I changed an Itachi English dub quote, but in case anyone doesn't want it changed, I'll put the original one here.

Foolish little brother. If you want to kill me, hate me, detest me, and survive in an unslightly way. Run, run and cling to life. And then some day, when you have the same eyes as I do, come before me. Kimimaro kaguya 04:21, 23 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I was thinking about that myself. What about dividing the character sections into Japanese, then English quotes; or put something like (JP)/(ENG) at the beginning or end of the quote? HS Yuna 15:27, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Since the manga is the only source of true quotes, with fansubs being second and english dubbed coming in dead last in canoness, I think only manga scanlated and fansubbed canon episode quotes should be used, not even filler episodes.

Whichever quotes are used (English dub, English manga, unofficial translations, etc), they need to reflect the fact that this is a shonen manga/anime. I know Wikiquote isn't censored, but when editing any article, the context needs to be taken into account. For this reason I edited a number of "S-snakes" (if that's the correct term) in this article, along with a certain "B" word.

Another thing, while I agree that quotes should only be from canon material (i.e., no filler quotes), I don't agree that "the manga is the only source of true quotes". Some people may have never read the manga. Remember, like Wikipedia, we need to keep an NPOV here.

In any case, if there "has" to be swearing, then it should only be PG-level; something that would occur in Viz's uncut boxsets, because again, this is a shonen manga/anime.

(FYI: When it comes to swearing, I am of course, biased towards a certain direction, but the above statement was as fair as I could make it.) Brittany Ka 21:27, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Shonen, for those (like me) who would not understand the relevance of the term to the discussion. -- Greyed 21:39, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Really we should just have a english dub section and a fansub section.71.176.131.169 08:18, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Errors in the article edit

Since the article was reverted to a grammatically and punctually incorrect, POV-filled, and misspelled version for no reason and protected before such mistakes could be corrected, I request that an admin reverts the article back to this revision as to fix any such errors. If desired, the names can be kept in the Japanese format until an agreement can be made on whether or not we should use English or Japanese names, but the rest should be fixed as soon as possible. Thanks in advance. // DecaimientoPoético 01:13, 10 May 2007 (UTC) ok i know this isn't a quote itself but don't you think a quote site should have quotes and not conversationReply
