Split reverted, overquoting

edit

I've reverted User:Cbrown1023's split of this article into individual seasons. I assume that the reason is was split was that the individual page was getting large. However, the reason that it was getting large is because of overquoting, not sheer number of episodes (as is the case with The Simpsons and Stargate SG-1, for example). As a general rule, no episode should have more than about 8 quotes; some of the ones here are up around 20. Too many quotes per episode, whether on one page or several, makes it more likely for the content to be considered a copyright violation, something that we must be careful to avoid. In this case, the best course of action for reducing the size of this page is to trim each episode down to only a few, pithy quotes. —LrdChaos (talk) 16:47, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've begun the process of trimming the quotes on this page -- I've gotten through the first season so far. ~ UDScott 17:53, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Season 2 is done. ~ UDScott 19:56, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
This page needs to be watched, as some have tried to put back many of the quotes I cut - recent edit activity had the first two episodes back up to around 20 quotes per episode before I reverted the changes. We need to keep this at a reasonable level. ~ UDScott 01:16, 20 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Season 3 is done. As of now, the page has a reasonable amount of quotes per episode, and does not represent a copyright violation. BUt it should be watched to prevent quote creep from occurring. ~ UDScott 16:29, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've had to add the checkcopyright tag back to this page - it is once again in a state of overquoting. ~ UDScott 17:45, 10 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Limit on Quotations and Page Size (380kB now)

edit
  • Should be 5 per episode, which as far as I can tell it is. The page size is now 380kB over 8 seasons.
  • Even IF the pages were split into individual seasons, they'd still be about 48 kB long, and I can see from previous discussion that splitting was unpopular (or seems to encourage overquoting).
  • Do you want me to split it anyway? Or should it be trimmed further? Soph (talk) 21:29, 4 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
I would recommend that you go ahead and split it into pages for the individual seasons - but we must remain vigilant so that the number of quotes do not start to creep up again (which has happened several times in the past). To that end, wWhen you do create the individual season pages, please also create a talk page for each and place the Quote limit tag - {{quotation limit|type=tv|length=60 min}} - on each to warn about remaining within limits. Thanks! ~ UDScott (talk) 00:15, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Split Complete

edit

Seasons 2 and 3 are both still very big (100k each) even though, as far as I can see, they both conform to 5 quotes or less per episode. I think part of the problem is:

  • a) The sheer number of episodes.
  • b) The quotes themselves are very long quotes (quotes should aim to be about 250 words or less).

Please remember to observe fair use policy to avoid breaching copyright.

As with your work on other pages - great work once again on making this split. Thanks! ~ UDScott (talk) 13:07, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Meredith's Voiceovers

edit

I propose a new page for Merediths voiceovers; mostly because they take up 2/5 quotes per episode, and also personally because they're always much better quotes than the rest of the episodes. Anyone else agree or am I being weird? Soph (talk) 03:09, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

My opinion is that that might be a bit much. I would rather keep them with the episodes as they are. ~ UDScott (talk) 13:05, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Not weird, but probably not a good idea. Forking multiple pages for the same production makes it difficult to manage the limits on quotations in aggregate. See also Wikiquote:Fictional characters and the discussion behind it. If the soliloquies are the best part then that is the part to quote, and forget the less quotable bits. ~ Ningauble (talk) 13:15, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
