Wikipedia RfA
editHi, Gordon. I got your request for support on your Wikipedia request for administrator status. I'm afraid I'm going to have to decline. One of the essential criteria I use for contemplating potential admins on Wikiquote is the breadth of both article and adminstrative edits that a user has done, and I'd use the same principles for any WP RfA. In fact, that's a major reason I haven't asked to be a WP admin myself — to date, the majority of my article edits have been on song lists and TV episode articles (not a great indicator of a broad encyclopedic editing practice), and my adminstrative edits (e.g., moves, VfDs) have been relatively rare. I see that you are being rather unfortunately savaged by quite a few folks who are bringing up the concentration of your votes around a fairly narrow set of topics (however conscientious you've been on these), which is the same pattern of edits I've seen for your work here on Wikiquote. The best I could manage at this time would be a Neutral vote, as I've been impressed by your research and your diplomacy here, but even so, my input would probably not be any real help. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 03:37, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
Images
editHi, Gordon. None of your personal images have copyright tags. I would appreciate it if you uploaded those pictures to commons under a suitable free license if you want to use them here. Thanks ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 12:28, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your support, I guess? It's nice to know that sometimes people can be respectful even when they don't agree with you on an issue like this. Catamorphism 05:27, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Your pages
editWill you at least upload your images to Commons instead of here? Cbrown1023 talk 10:31, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- You certainly may, if you wish. I am sure the licensing permits you to do so. However, I do not understand the advantages to having it on commons as opposed to where it is now. Is it not the same difference legally and practically, as it applies to us? (I have heard that commons is sometimes used but forget the differences and specifics -and I don't want to make a simple situation more complicated than necessary.) Thank you in advance for your clarification here -and thank you for your concern and attention to detail.--GordonWattsDotCom 11:21, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Two points on the images. First, the advantage to Wikiquote of moving images to Commons is that Commons gets the responsibility for policing license issues. Considering our tiny admin staff and plethora of maintenance issues, this is a major benefit, which is a significant reason Wikiquote has been removing images for the past year. Second, as I mentioned at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/GordonWattsDotCom, only Image:GordonWatts.jpg appears to be a likely non-copyvio. The other 2 images seem to be from copyrighted works, but do not have an explicit source provided. (As a lawyer, I'm sure you realize that "image of me" is not a legal statement of who owns the image.) Image:GordonThen.jpg appears to be a montage of yearbook pictures. You may have assembled the montage (although even this is not actually stated) and therefore claim a derivative copyright, but the original images are probably copyrighted as well, limiting your legal right to assert GFDL. Likewise, Image:GordonEnhancedPicRally.jpg appears to be from a newspaper, which is almost certainly copyrighted by someone else. The only argument you might make is "fair use", but the Wikimedia Board of Trustees has declared it rejects fair-use arguments for images used only in the user namespace, as they do not provide a necessary illustration of the project's content, only of its auxiliary (courtesy) pages. Consider also that it should be no challenge for a user to provide their own free image of themselves, voiding any argument about irreplaceability of a copyrighted image. Other images used just because they say something about the user's activities are not necessary to the project's purposes. This is even more apparent when the images include the user's activity in controversial events, which are what earn the label of "soapboxing". In short, there is no need for such images, especially on pages which are provided to users as a courtesy but which are still required to serve the interests of the project. As far as being singled out, I am not aware of any other users we currently have these problems with, but any such brought to the attention of the community should be pursued as well. In practical terms, solving problems on a 10000-article project with only a few frequent editors is basically a game of Whac-A-Mole — we deal with them as we find them and have time to address them. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 12:17, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- One other point: Cbrown1023 is not asking if we can upload to Commons, but if you will. As there are no specific sources stated, no one else can be asked to make the required claim of right to assert GFDL. Without explicit source statements, we are now required to delete images, even without a formal policy about where they should go or what license they should be provided under. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 12:22, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Jeff expressed my sentiments pretty well (although he was expressing his :) ). Cbrown1023 talk 21:16, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you both for the replies. I just took a look at one of my yearbooks, and it does not show any copyright info at all, but I agree that this is a borderline gray area, so I would not object to the yearbook montage (Image:GordonThen.jpg) being deleted. The "GordonEnhancedPicRally.jpg" was emailed to me by someone as a gift. I don't recall who, but it was not under copyright to my knowledge. This image can go both ways. I don't mind if it is deleted, but I don't see any harm in keeping it. GordonWatts.jpg is a picture that a friend took of me with my camera. I would vote to delete the yearbook pics, to keep the business suit pic and to enter a "Neutral" vote on the Rally pic. I shall cast my votes after I see all the latest posts on that page. That should take care of the Commons upload issues, I hope.--GordonWattsDotCom 02:40, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Result
editPer our compromise, I have closed the VfD discussion, delete the images, and have had your renamed (to User:GordonWatts). Cbrown1023 talk 14:34, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- I saw also that you deleted the practical joke links on the top of my page. I thought they were funny, but I can live without them, so I am OK with that. "I am Gordon Watts, and I approve this message." I only wish that Wikipedia was more fair and flexible like this. (If you peruse my WikiPedia activities, you will see a small number of admins violating numerous rules -and a large number of admins and arbiters doing nothing.) I think the compromise here, at WikiQuote, is OK for all parties.--GordonWatts 02:17, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed
editHello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called GordonWatts. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name GordonWatts~enwikiquote that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
