Using Italic fonts to designate a link to a page in the English Wikipedia
editMost readers like to know when a link they click leads them into a different web-site. It is easy to spot links that lead outside of wikimedia web-sites. However it is not easy to determine if a link here leads to another wiki , such as wikipedia.
I have used italics on this page so that readers can easily distinguish links that lead to the English Wikipedia as opposed most links which are to this wiki. Any thoughts or questions? Ottawahitech (talk) 15:18, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I have a question: for such a fundamental change in the presentation of links, why wouldn't you bring this up for discussion in a more central place, rather than just making the change on a single page? How do you know that "most readers like to know when a link they click leads them to a different web-site"? Or is this just your own opinion? This does not match to the established style of our site, and should be reverted. ~ UDScott (talk) 15:28, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Good questions!
- How do I know that "most readers like to know when a link they click leads them to a different web-site".
- I am sure someone can find a link to reliable source that says this (?).
- my own experience on the web has been that many readers are reluctant to click links. I speculate that at least one reason for this reluctance is a feeling that clicking the wrong link can result in harm to one's reading gadget (laptop, phone, what have you) such a computer virus
- The admin who welcomed me to this wiki years ago seemed to share my opinion on the topic
- To be continued ... Ottawahitech (talk) 16:10, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- So again, it is based on your own personal experience. If you are able to produce more information on this, it would be welcome in a discussion proposing this change - but you shouldn't just start changing pages to suit your own personal preferences. This change would affect every single page on the site and should not be taken lightly. I will revert the changes for now - feel free to start a more general discussion on the topic and propose change(s) as you see fit - just don't start making those changes without discussion and consensus. Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 16:22, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
