Country Or nationality

edit

We have two categories:

I am not sure when to use which. Anyone? Ottawahitech (talk) 16:32, 22 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

I believe we should consolidate these into one category - I would nominate Category: People by nationality, as that one seems to be more established and has more subcategories already created. ~ UDScott (talk) 18:31, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't believe those two categories are the same. There are Norwegians by nationality who are no longer residents of Norway and who acquired a new citizenship and renounced their Norwegian nationality. These people are obviously from Norway, but I am not sure if they can be classed as Norwegians by nationality Ottawahitech (talk) 16:54, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I guess I do not disagree, but I'm not sure that saying a person is from a certain country is any different - if they moved away and got citizenship from another country, which one would you say they were from? The problem still exists either way, IMHO. I just suggested using the one because it was more established. I don't know that I feel strongly for either one, but if Category:People by country is selected, I would suggest moving all of the subcategories for Category:People by nationality over to Category:People by country, and making the former a redirect to the latter. ~ UDScott (talk) 16:33, 11 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
One thing I will note is that Wikipedia does draw this distinction and uses nationality as we have here. The sorting by country is more used for people that migrated or settled elsewhere (without having the nationality of that country). This is the rationale that has been used here. ~ UDScott (talk) 16:39, 11 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
