Loay Elbasyouni is a Palestinian American Power Electronics engineer, Loay is currently the Senior Director of Engineering at AstrodyneTDI, a power electronics company. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Engineering in electrical engineering from the University of Louisville. he grew up in Gaza and finished his post-secondary education from Biet Hannoun School. His remarkable journey “From Gaza to Mars” and his achievements have been featured on multiple international media outlets around the world. Loay was part of the NASA team that made history in April 2021 for flying the Ingenuity helicopter from the surface of Mars, where he was an electrical and power electronics lead for NASA-JPL Mars Helicopter team. He has been awarded a number of achievement awards for his exceptional contribution to the Mars helicopter team in demonstrating feasibility of helicopter flight in the extremely thin atmosphere at Mars. Loay has over 20 years of work experience focused on power electronics in several industries, including automotive, renewable energy and aerospace. His career ranged from working at small startup, such as Coda Automotive, Azure Dynamics, and Fisker Automotive, to large companies, such as General Electrics, Dana Corp, Safran and AeroVironment. He served as Senior Power Electronics Engineer and Engineering Lead on a number of projects, including solar planes, hydrogen plane, battery pack development, motor control, DC-DC, and battery chargers. He also worked as Power Electronics and Control Manager where he managed a team of engineers for the development of power electronics in commercial aviation for customers such as, Boeing and Airbus. Prior to that he worked for a number of electric vehicle startups and on Ford’s first electric car. Most recently, Loay worked on the advance power conversion and propulsion technologies used for the development of space applications, such as the NASA-JPL Mars helicopter. He is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Power Electronics Society, and the Control Systems Society. Loay is currently in process of started anther company that utilize NASA technologies, using space to technology to improve everyday life on earth. Loay also serve on the board of several organizations and companies, and he also work as space technical expert on several TV stations.
