Eddie Segoura
editEddie, you seem to be misunderstanding several things about Wikiquote, and I'd like to clear these things up so we can benefit from your contributions here. First, let me apologize for not posting the following comments on your talk page at the same time I posted them to the pages of the two anonymous editors who contributed to non-VFD edits of Eddie Segoura:
- Editors using IP addresses 205.188.117.13 and 69.112.54.11 (at least one presumably being Wikipedia user EddieSegoura) created or edited a quote article titled Eddie Segoura. It was quickly nominated for deletion as having a non-notable subject. Please note that this is not a criticism of quoteworthiness. Wikiquote's Main Page introduction clearly states that it is a compendium of quotes from notable people and creative works, like any significant quotation publication (e.g., Bartlett's, Oxford), just as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for notable topics. We no more accept personal quotation articles from WQ editors than WP accepts articles about WP editors. Like Wikipedia, we do allow editors to place such information on their user pages; in fact, we encourage folks to add their own (or their friends' or any favorite) quotes to there. Please read Wikiquote:FAQ for more information. Also, please note that, like Wikipedia, we do not allow removal of VFD tags after nomination until the vote is closed. Thank you for your cooperation. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 08:55, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
There is no easy way even for sysops to connect IP addresses to user names (which is usually a good thing), thus the wording of the text. It was my intention to notify you of these practices, in the hopes that you would recognize that Wikiquote is no different from Wikipedia, in which I'd seen you have already been participating. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten that you (as your user ID) had not edited the article, but had posted a VFD vote; otherwise, I would have posted the comments above here as well.
Please do not take this personally, Eddie. Neither users nor sysops have the "right" to remove VFD tags before vote closure. When someone nominates an article for deletion, the community is obligated to consider its merits in the context of Wikiquote policy for a minimum of 2 weeks, unless there is a specific case that permits speedy deletion. Even if speedy deletion seems warranted, a sysop must use careful judgment to avoid controversial early closures. This is standard practice both on Wikipedia and Wikiquote (although our deadline is longer because our smaller community needs more time to review articles). Therefore, we are very likely to quickly restore deleted VFD tags, even if it takes us a few days to get to reviewing the article for potential speedy deletion. And even though this seems to be a "no-brainer", as virtually no WP or WQ editor is notable enough to warrant a main namespace article on themselves, we nearly always err on the side of policy. You should not feel embarrassed by having a self-quote article under review or deleted; it's just a policy that you apparently were unaware of.
As I mentioned, I noticed that you've edited on Wikipedia for several weeks. Consider the likely reaction there if you were to write an autobiographical article about yourself. (I'm assuming you aren't famous; if I'm wrong, then you may have a legitimate reason for both a WP and and WQ article. But the community would need some evidence of this.) Someone would very likely post an AFD (article for deletion; WP's version of VFD) request there, and the WP community would then make a case for whether you have sufficient notability to warrant an article, just like Wikiquote. (They might actually be a bit ruder, but that's because people are less likely to consider themselves worthy of world encyclopedia articles, so the folks who do this are often vandals, which WP suffers from even more than WQ.) Unfortunately, we at Wikiquote do have some difficulty making people understand that we aren't a compendium of quotations from everyone in the world, any more than Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that lists everything known in the world. Both projects have notability and verifiability requirements.
I apologize for "talking your ear off" about this. (If you spend more time with us here, you'll come to see that verbosity is one of my major sins.) But I don't want you to have such a bad initial experience with Wikiquote. I'm convinced you just didn't realize the "no-vanity article" policy, and made an not-uncommon mistake by placing a personal quote in a main-namespace article. The VFD, not incidentally, gives you time to create a user page and move your quote there, with no hard feelings from the community. (Take a look at my user page to see I have my own quotes as well; it's rather common practice here.) I hope that we can look forward to your ongoing participation here as well as on Wikipedia. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 16:48, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- After reviewing Wikiquote:Speedy deletions, I see that case #7, which is really about redirects (automatic browser redirections to a different wiki page), implies that editors (not just sysops) can move articles that are more appropriate as user pages to a user-page title. (Sysops can then speedy-delete the redirects in a few days to remove the article from the main article space.) If you like, we can move the current Eddie Segoura to User:EddieSegoura and delete the VFD tag. Let me know if this suits you, or if you have any questions about this or any other Wikiquote matter. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 17:09, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Wow, what an overwhelming amount of feedback! In any case, redirecting or moving is fine. The deletion request was made by another anonymous IP. I felt the correct course of action was an RfV, rather than ambush the new page with deletion.
P.S. I'm actively pursuing a Sysop promotion on Wikipedia so I'm trying really hard to make as many contributions as a can. It's unfortunate every site needs a separate account, though. -- EddieSegoura 04:37, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed
editHello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called EddieSegoura. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name EddieSegoura~enwikiquote that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
