- Evolution is a bankrupt speculative philosophy, not a scientific fact. Only a spiritually bankrupt society could ever believe it.… Only atheists could accept this Satanic theory.
- This is attributed in The Skeptical Inquirer, Vol. 12 (1987), p. 129 to a Jimmy Swaggart Ministries booklet titled The Pre-Adamic Creation and Evolution (1986), except the part after the ellipsis, about Satanic theory, is not presented as a direct quotation, and appears to be a paraphrase or interpretation of Swaggart's thoughts.
Similar statements do appear in some of Swaggart's books:
- Actually, evolution is a bankrupt, speculative philosophy — it has never been, and is not now, a scientific fact.
- Questions and Answers (1985), p. 99
- Evolution is a bankrupt, speculative theory (a guess) — not a scientific fact. And only a spiritually bankrupt society would stubbornly persist in such foolishness.
- Rape of a Nation (1985), p. 94
- Actually, evolution is a bankrupt, speculative philosophy — it has never been, and is not now, a scientific fact.
- Although the attribution given above is widely repeated in this form on the internet, it appears to be a misquotation. ~ Ningauble (talk) 17:27, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
