  • "Bûter brea en griene tsiis." - Wa't dat net sizze kin is gjin oprjochte Fries.
    • "Butter, bread and green cheese." - Whoever can't say that is not a real Frisian.
Comma after "Bûter". It's not the non-existent delicacy of "butter bread", as it's from the time before margarine was invented. The saying is attributed to en:w:Grutte Pier. It's not in itself a proverb, but rather a shibboleth to distinguish natives from foreigners. If it may not seem much of a shibboleth, that's probably because it stems from the older butter, bread and green cheese, is good English and good Fries". (Spelling depends on the area and the era.) It's a reference to the people on both coasts of the North Sea being able to understand one-another. (The "green cheese" mentioned, is unripened; it doesn't pertain to its colour.) Siz wat? edit

Most of the "Frisian proverbs" mentioned here are not in Frisian. Some also may not be proverbs.

To start with: It's either 1 Frisian (called "Western Frisian" by most English speakers) is a language spoken in the northern Netherlands. (Almost exclusively in Fryslân/Friesland). Or 2: "Frisian" languages are spoken in specific parts of the Netherlands and Germany (and Denmark, but not currrent).
Then filter "proverbs" according to whether they are in fy: or also in frr: and stq:. Once you have thus determined what language the saying is in (this may also be related to the sources indicated), you may then correct the given meanings.
This is in English, so Frisian languages should be understandable, but let me know if you get into trouble Aliter (talk) 20:16, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal of Bökinghard Frisian to here. edit

Proposal to merge Bökinghard Frisian to here where it seems to be closely related. @Aliter: & Spannerjam for comments. Intend to implement merge in a week if no opposition. -- User:Djm-leighpark(a)talk 03:12, 2 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Per comments by Aliter below proposal withdrawn as seems it is not a good idea by itself. thankyou. -- User:Djm-leighpark(a)talk 10:47, 2 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • It is de boer al likefolle, as de ko skyt of de bolle. You have, what, five pages on North-Frisian dialects, but you suggest merging it instead with the one page that also pertains to what you would call West-Frisian? I could suggest instead to merge all proverb pages into one list, regardless of origin. Very few people would be able to read it all, but at least you'd have no trouble to determine where it came from. Aliter (talk) 10:30, 2 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
