Merge proposal of Wisdom of Sirach to here

edit

To the best of my understanding the Wisdom of Sirach and Book of Ecclesiasticus (d:Q155980) are the same subject and the earliest created article should have been extended rather than a duplicate created. On the English Wikipedia the linked target Sirach is a redirect to Wisdom of Sirach (d:Q155980) which is also a redirect target of Ecclesiasticus which is the redirect target from this article. I propose a merge, and I will perform the merge as a last resort (or if anyone agrees to do post merge clean up or collaborate on a pre-merge target) but I'd prefer a volunteer to undertake this if they feel technically comfortable to do it. Note there was a failed proposal to an alternate target which suggested this merge as an alternative. -- User:Djm-leighpark(a)talk 21:24, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I agree with the merge; the two pages are about the exact same book. Since the other article only has five edits in the history (not counting the merge proposal) this does seem like the right target. Antandrus (talk) 21:44, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
(side note: ugh: no chapter or verse numbers, or translation source, on the other page!! oy veh, that will require some cleanup) Antandrus (talk) 21:47, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I have looked again at the merge and agree with issues raised above. In this case it is first necessary the particular translation used can be verified. The creator included the Wikisource link when creating the article on 16:51, 20 March 2022. The Wikisource redirect and article "Syrach" seem remain unchanged since that date; and is ambiguous in suggesting translations. As such that is not a helpful source for that translation. The net result is that content is not fit to be merged here and left unchanged; and pragmatically most people capable of working out what is what from that would probably prefer to do a w:WP:TNT which would probably be less effort. I am minded there are five ways to deal with this. One is to leave things as is which at best simply defers a maintence problem. The second is to raise a VfD which involves wide community time and effort on how to deal with this. And the third option is to go through with the merge, which in essence seems agreeable to everyone and then to remove the newly added content which is not up to standard - while seemingly a strange option this retains the content and reference to the history. The fourth way to is convert to a redirect. The fifth is to merge across the {{wikisource}} template as the only pragmatically relevant content. The last will preserve history etc etc and is consistent. About to execute that. -- Djm-leighpark(a)talk 21:41, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
  •  Y Done: A trivial merge has been completed due to issues above but the merge does allow for anyone wishing to view the original content can still find it there and it can still be copied here if the translation is explicitly identified and inline sources (ie verse numbers/page numbers) identified for the quotes. -- Djm-leighpark(a)talk 22:20, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
