Talk:A Few Good Men
Too Much Dialogue
editIt seems to me that there is a bit too much dialogue included on this page. I realize that certain scenes are very key to the film and quite riveting to watch. But I think we've included too much here. I'm specifically referring to the next to last piece of dialogue on the page (that includes Col. Jessep's courtroom appearance) that seems way too large and should probably be trimmed. ~ UDScott 12:26, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
There's now even more dialogue. The page has close to 9000 words, which I would guess might be half the dialogue, or even more. Can this be legally acceptable? Antiquary 12:17, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Too Little Dialogue
editY'know, I can understand removing the huge sections of dialogue that used to be on this page, but can you really justify removing the entire sections of Galloway, Markinson, and Ross, not to mention trimming Kaffee's section down to a single line? Furthermore, while I don't think the entirety of Jessup's transcript to be put on here, surely we can put on a couple more key bits of dialogue between him and other characters. I'd add it back myself, but I don't want to incur the wrath of Wikipedia. ~ Kingdok 09:11, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- The page was trimmed for copyright concerns, as seen in Wikiquote:Limits on quotations. A quotation page must strike a balance: on the one hand, there are all those quotes which editors might like or think important; on the other hand, there are limitations which we ought to respect so as not to infringe on copyrights. Since the natural tendency of editors is to add and never subtract, we have had to create limits which, we would hope, are not unreasonable. - InvisibleSun 19:38, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- I understand the rules, but it still seems excessive to trim it down to so few quotes, especially when countless other films are allowed so many more, not to mention books, themes, and people. While it's not really fair to point out every single page that does follow Wikipedia's quote limitations, I find it impossible that no one involved in copyright cleanup has noticed movies on the front page, such as Star Wars or Fight Club, that greatly exceed the limitations.
- I know that the rules are the rules and that nothing I say on here is going to change them, but it all seems too ridiculous to not comment on. I mean, why even have Wikiquote if we're going to limit them like this? ~ Kingdok 02:44, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
- If you check out the page entitled Category:Pages which need their copyright status checked, you'll see that we haven't ignored the need to trim Fight Club and the Star Wars pages: they've already been tagged for trimming. Our aim isn't to allow some pages to have "so many more" quotes than others; it's merely that we haven't gotten to them yet. There aren't all that many of us here doing the work, so it will take a while to trim all the ones that need trimming. If our efforts seem severe, there are concerns to be kept in mind: 1) that there are difficulties in accommodating copyright limitations, which tend to be unpredictably defined and applied, forcing us to err on the side of caution; 2) that a Wikiquote page should be seen as only the quotable highlights of a film, book, program, etc., and not as something which pretends to be as rewarding as the original work; and 3) that a quotation is, by its nature, fairly brief. A Wikiquote page, if well edited, should make you want to turn to the original work. We make allowances (far too many, I would argue) for longer, well-known bits of dialogue, but the general emphasis is always for brevity. - InvisibleSun 03:17, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Trimming notice
editAs part of the Wikiquote:Copyright Cleanup Project, this article has been trimmed to a maximum of 12 quotes for a 138-minute film. Additional quotations could be added so long as an equal number are deleted. See Wikiquote:Limits on quotations for guidelines. - InvisibleSun 19:38, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
