Pete Buttigieg

Peter "Pete" Paul Montgomery Buttigieg (pronounced /ˈbʊtɪdʒɪdʒ/, born January 19, 1982) is an American politician and former military officer who is currently serving as the United States secretary of transportation. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana from 2012 to 2020, which earned him the nickname "Mayor Pete".

Buttigieg ran as a candidate for president in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries, launching his campaign for the w:2020 United States presidential election on April 14, 2019. He became one of the first openly gay men to launch a major party presidential campaign.

  • At the end of the day, rights in this country have been expanded because courts have understood what the true meaning of the letter of the law and the spirit of the Constitution is. That is not about time traveling yourself back to the 18th century and subjecting yourself to the same prejudices and limitations as the people who write these words. The Constitution is a living document because the English language is a living language. And you need to have some readiness to understand that in order to serve on the court in a way that will actually make life better.
