Invincible (TV series)

American animated superhero drama web television series

Invincible is an American adult animated superhero streaming television series, based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley which premiered on Amazon Prime Video. The show follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson and his transformation into a superhero under the guidance of his father Omni-Man, the most powerful being on the planet. During his transformation, Mark finds himself struggling between his personal life and superhero duties, where he will be forced to prove that he can be the hero which his father is. The series stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J. K. Simmons, as the Grayson family, while the rest of the cast serve as the recurring characters. In April 2021, Amazon renewed the series for a second and third season.

Season 1 edit

It's About Time edit

[Mark and Nolan are playing catch while throwing a baseball around the world]
Nolan Grayson: You seem tired.
Mark Grayson: I'm fine. Just got... a lot on my mind, I guess.
Nolan Grayson: Oh, yeah? So, what is it?
Mark Grayson: You're just gonna keep prying if I'm evasive at all, so, um... I'm scared, Dad. What if I can't do this?
Nolan Grayson: [hearing a whooshing] You hear it?
Mark Grayson: I do.
Nolan Grayson: Get ready. [Mark grabs the baseball] Were you nervous?
Mark Grayson: A little.
Nolan Grayson: But you caught it?
Mark Grayson: I did.
Nolan Grayson: Being a superhero is no different. This is the beginning of a long journey for you and me. Along the way, you're gonna need to do things you don't want to do, or might not think you can do. It's okay to be scared. It's natural to doubt yourself, but if you can push through that, and do what needs to be done, you'll do just fine. Do you think you can do that, Mark?
Mark Grayson: Yeah. [throws the baseball around the world, hitting and wrecking the top of a mountain, and Nolan grabs the baseball]
Nolan Grayson: Son... kids your age think they're invincible, and it holds them back, makes them careless. The thing is... you're different. You actually are... [hands Mark the burnt baseball] .. invincible.
[feeling inspired, Mark smiles. Next scene, he is on Art Rosenbaum's lab]
Mark Grayson: Got it.
Art Rosenbaum: Okay, kid. Let's get to work.
[next scene, Mark is in his new suit, and flies around the city, with sequence followed by the song "Broken Boy" by Cage the Elephant. Then, he sees an explosion on the distance]
Invincible: Crap.
[Invincible flies off for the situation, which involves Killcannon having a shootout against the police]
Killcannon: You guys think you might have bitten off more than you can chew? [points at a building he zapped] That building has a hole in it, look! [the policemen continue shooting his armor, until Killcannon prepares to shoot again]
Policeman: Shit! [avoids the shot, but is knocked unconscious]
[just as Killcannon is about to fire again, Invincible emerges and punches through several walls]
Invincible: [checking the rooms, which are clear from citizens] Whoa... All clear? [continues pouncing Killcannon, and defeats him] You might as well give up. I'm-- [title card is presented]

[the Guardians of the Globe are summoned to their facility]
The Immortal: Darkwing, why did you call us here?
Darkwing: [confused] Me?
War Woman: So none of us signaled the alert?
Green Ghost: Oh, God, what's going on? Is it bad?
[Red Rush suddenly notices someone flying towards the Immortal, and saves him. The attacker is revealed to be Omni-Man, to the Guardians' shock]
The Immortal: Omni-Man?
[the Guardians, starting with War Woman, begin fighting Omni-Man, with Red Rush preventing his attacks. Then, Omni-Man grabs Red Rush and begins squeezing his head with his bare hands, horrifically crushing his skull]
War Woman: NO!!
The Immortal: NO!! [Martian Man wraps himself around Omni-Man, and the remaining Guardians] WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS?! [he and War Woman begin beating Omni-Man violently, until he breaks free, and overpowers War Woman before grabbing Darkwing's leg, and smashing his head to pieces against the floor. Then, he tosses Darkwing's body to Green Ghost]
Green Ghost: (horror-struck) Oh, no...!
[immediately, Omni-Man drives his fist through Green Ghost's skull, killing her, and uses her body as a shield against Aquarus's water attack as Martian Man recovers]
Aquarus: [to Martian Man] Are you alright?
Martian Man: I live.
The Immortal: [helping War Woman up] Someone must be controlling him. He would never do this.
War Woman: Regardless, it's him or us.
The Immortal: I choose us.
[the fight continues with War Woman slamming Omni-Man's face with her mace. After punching her away, Omni-Man grabs her mace, and smashes Aquarus's head with it, killing him. An enraged Martian Man roars, and once again traps and subdues Omni-Man briefly while the two remaining Guardians, The Immortal and War Woman, batter him, drawing whole puddles of blood in the room. Eventually, Omni-Man rips Martian Man's head to pieces, punches a hole through The Immortal's stomach, and breaks War Woman's neck]
The Immortal: (exhales and whispers) Why? Why!
[without saying a word, Omni-Man decapitates the Immortal and, heavily injured, collapses himself in exhaustion]

Here Goes Nothing edit

[after a flight around the city, Atom Eve welcomes Invincible to the Team Teen's headquarters]
Rex Splode: Oh, hey! It's the iceman.
Atom Eve: Rex...
Rex Splode: Couldn't have won that fight without you. Oh! Except we did.
Dupli-Kate: They got old. And ran away.
Rex Splode: Still counts.
Robot: Welcome, Invincible. My name is Robot. Apologies for Rex Splode. He's...
Rex Splode: Unbelievably awesome.
Robot: Incorrigible.
Atom Eve: And rude.
Rex Splode: And bored of this.
Dupli-Kates #1 and #2: [unison] I'm Dupli-Kate.
Invincible: Invincible. Which one of you do I look at when we talk?

Omni-Man: [confronting the Flaxans in their home-planet] You don't seem to understand. Earth isn't yours to conquer. [he then proceeds to savagely lay waste on the Flaxans' world]

Who You Calling Ugly? edit

Omni-Man: [in a speech for the Guardians of the Globe's televised funeral] I've fought the unimaginable in defense of this world. I've battled alien tyrants, defeated nightmares from the deep. Gone toe to toe with ancient gods... but no matter what threat I faced, I knew I wasn't facing it alone. Darkwing. Aquarus. War Woman. Green Ghost. Red Rush. Martian Man. Immortal. The Guardians of the Globe. Today, we have lost titans, protectors, heroes, and we are left to wonder... who will save us now? I will, and so will others like me. New heroes answering the call. New champions ready to risk everything to keep this planet safe. All inspired by these great souls who came before us. You will have moments of doubt, of fear, of uncertainty, but in those moments, have faith... [lifts off] and look to the sky. [flies away]
[next scene, the Graysons attend to the Guardians' private burial along with Eve, and the Guardians' loved ones]
Mark Grayson: We seriously have to put everyone through this again?
Samantha Eve Wilkins: The big one's for show, but the public can't know where the actual bodies are buried. Souvenir hunters.
Mark Grayson Jesus.
Nolan Grayson: I was never a Guardian of the Globe, but it was the Guardians who welcomed me when I first arrived on this planet. They were my mentors. My comrades. My friends. They knew the reality of this life. Martian Man was exiled from his own people. War Woman was from a different age. Darkwing... [chuckles ruefully and clears throat] Well, Darkwing made his own kind of solitude. It was a rare, lucky few of us who found someone who understood our path, even rarer if they accepted it. I hope they will rest in peace, but at least they will rest together.
[the coffins are buried in the holes, as Red Rush's widow Olga, still sobbing, tries to reach her husband's coffin, with Cecil and Ferguson trying to stop her]
Olga: Get your hands off me! [screams in anguish as she falls off]
Donald Ferguson: Olga, please, calm down.
Olga: You wouldn't even let me see him. Josef is finally standing still, and I still can't see him!
Debbie Grayson: [to Mark] I'd better...
Mark Grayson: Yeah. [Debbie comforts Olga]
Samantha Eve Wilkins: [to Mark] You okay?
Mark Grayson: Me? I... I dunno. It just doesn't seem real. [noticing Olga] That could have been my mom, putting my dad in one of those holes, or me. If this could happen to the Guardians of the Globe, it means that none of us are... [title card is presented with sober music]

Rex Splode: Okay, just to make it clear, there is no universe in which I wake up at 6:00 a.m., and the world isn't on fire. Come on, Robot. We don't need this boot camp bullshit. It's us.
Robot: We're not on the Teen Team any longer, Rex.
Black Samson: Exactly. I'm sure you've had a lot of experience wrangling teenagers, but I was with the Guardians from day one.
Rex Splode: Wow, thanks, Dad. Maybe if you didn't lose your powers, you might've been there to help the Guardians on their last day.
Black Samson: I don't know you yet, so I'm going to assume that was a joke, and I don't need to beat your ass until all you wanna do is call me "Dad" again.

Neil Armstrong, Eat Your Heart Out edit

[Nolan confronts detective Darkblood in his office]
Damien Darkblood: Wondered if you'd come.
Nolan Grayson: You were in my house. You frightened my wife.
Damien Darkblood: You murdered seven people.
Nolan Grayson: Maybe it was you. Maybe you came to finish the job you started with the Guardians. You're the demon, after all.
Damien Darkblood: Hmm... and demons know evil when they see it.
Nolan Grayson: If you threaten my family again with your conspiracy theory bullshit...
Damien Darkblood: You'll kill me?
Nolan Grayson: I won't have to. Who do you think they're gonna believe? Me or you. [covers next to the door]
Damien Darkblood: [exhales, growling] Won't give up, Nolan. Can't hide truth. Wife already suspects. How long until son does, too?
Nolan Grayson: Go fuck yourself, Darkblood. [boosts out of the office]

That Actually Hurt edit

Battle Beast: I was promised this world offered worthy opponents! But, oh, how you disappoint. Killing you is an act of mercy.

You Look Kinda Dead edit

[a drunken Doug Cheston awakens in a laboratory]
Doug Cheston: What the...? Hey, where am I?
D.A. Sinclair: Oh, hello. [chuckles] I know, you're confused, but I'm sure you're used to that. Just stay quiet and still, and soon you'll be feeling better than ever.
Doug Cheston What? What's going on?
D.A Sinclair: You're going through a metamorphosis, a miracle that will take you from useless boil on the behind of this crooked world, to a brave explorer charting a shining future - for all humanity...
Doug Cheston: [interrupts] Nerd! [guffaws] Who talks like that?! You do! You're a nerd, nerd! [soon finds out he is trapped in a table] Hey! Let me up, asshole! If this is some joke, or some weird sex shit, my dad's gonna sue you into the Stone Age! [lights reveal unfinished cyborg prototypes; horrified] Oh, Jesus! Oh! Oh, shit! [he then notices one of his hands is replaced with cybernetic limbs, and screams in panic] WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!
D.A. Sinclair: No histrionics, please.
Doug Cheston: WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO?!
D.A. Sinclair: Or I'll be forced to...
Doug Cheston: OH, MY GOD!!! [Sinclair slices Doug's throat with a knife]
D.A. Sinclair: I think we can all agree you're better without vocal cords... and don't worry about those prototypes. You're going to be different. You're going to be beautiful. You're going to be...
[title card is presented]

We Need to Talk edit

[William is driving in the neighborhood until something lands violently in the road, causing him to stop his car]
William Clockwell: What the hell was that? [the dust clears, revealing the subject to be Omni-Man; stammering] O-Omni... Uh, Mr. Grayson... Are you okay? You look kinda, uh... recently on fire.
Omni-Man: [pats William's car roof, and looks at the backseats] Where's Mark, William? You were supposed to drop him off an hour ago.
William Clockwell: Uh, Amber dumped him, and he didn't like my advice, so he went to go find Eve.
Omni-Man: Call him.
William Clockwell: His phone's broken. There was this attack at the college, and... and all of a sudden, we were... [interrupted by Omni-Man punching the car roof]
Omni-Man: Where's Eve?
William Clockwell: Uh... Mark said she got a place out in the woods, a couple hundred miles west of here. [notices Omni-Man's hands] That's not... blood on you, is it? [Omni-Man flies away in silence] Bye?

Omni-Man: This is pointless! You can't stop me.
Cecil: Yeah, you're right. I can't. But I can do the same thing I've been doing since I figured out you were a lying piece of shit: I can buy us a little more time.

[after a brutal battle, Omni-Man savagely impales the Immortal's chest with a single punch, with the world watching in horror on live television. Immortal sticks his thumbs into Omni-Man's eyes in an attempt to blind him. In agony, Omni-Man eventually manages to kill the hero once more, tirefully and horrifically bisecting him and dropping his halved body]
Invincible: [bewildered with the shocking scene] Dad?
Omni-Man: [with bloodshot eyes, he addresses to his son] Mark... we need to talk.

Where I Really Came From edit

[Mark attacks Omni-Man, believing that he was in mind control, until he stops]
Omni-Man: It's me, Mark. It's just me. This isn't how I wanted to do this, but I don't have a choice. It's time for you to know where I really come from: [flashback set in Viltrum plays; voice over] I am from Viltrum, but it's not the planet I've told you about: We have created a perfect civilization, but it took all of our strength, determination, and courage to get there. [flashback shows the Viltrumites battling and killing each other] In order for our people to reach their full potential, we had to remove the weak from our society. It was a long and difficult process. [next scene shows numerous Viltrumites dead, with the strongest of them, including Conquest, standing victorious] When it was over, our population was cut in half but what emerged from the ashes was unstoppable. [next scene shows a Viltrumite fleet in space] By the time I was born, Viltrum was already the greatest empire in our galaxy. We decided to make it the only empire in our galaxy. [next scene shows the Viltrumites battling and killing other aliens, and conquering their worlds] Once I was old enough, I joined the war effort. It was hard, but I believe in our cause. Some species resisted, of course, but no one could withstand us for long. Soon, our empire encompassed thousands of planets, but as territory grew, our forces were stretched thin, and our expansion stopped. [a group of Vitrumites are shown discussing] We needed a better, more efficient way to conquer worlds. [in another scene, Nolan is with a group of Vitrumite agents standing being monitored by their one-eyed general] Our most trusted officers were each given a planet to weaken by themselves. I was one of those lucky few. [Flashbacks show Nolan flying to Earth, and a young Mark riding a bike with Nolan and Debbie watching him; voice over] I couldn't tell your mother why I was here. [flashback ends] But that time's come to an end, and now, we need to get Earth ready to join the Viltrum Empire.

[as Invincible and Omni-Man fight, Atom Eve enters the Guardians of the Globe's room]
Rex Splode: Eve! [embraces Eve] Oh Jesus Christ, you're okay.
Atom Eve: I'm fine. What's happening with Mark and Omni-Man?
Rex Splode: Omni-Man's kicking the shit out of him. The world's gone fucking nuts.
Rudy Connors: Indeed. I truly hope Mark lives up to his name. To face his father and survive, he'll need to be...
[title card is presented with sinister music, and with the title being almost completely covered in blood]

[after a destructive battle across Chicago, Omni-Man has brutally beaten Invincible to near death, until he remembered Mark's childhood]
Omni-Man: [angrily as Invincible lies bloodied in the ground] Why did you make me do this?! You're fighting so you can watch everyone around you die! Think, Mark! You'll outlast every fragile, insignificant being on this planet. You'll live to see this world crumble to dust and blow away! Everyone and everything you know will be gone! What will you have after 500 years?!
Invincible: [weakly and soberly] You, Dad. I'd still have you. [Omni-Man remains silent, as his angry expression changes to a more remorseful one] Dad... [now repentant, Omni-Man flies away from Earth, tearfully]

Allen the Alien: So... you're a Viltrumite? But you don't work for them? And your dad tried to take over the planet but then left? He just left? That's nuts, man.
Invincible: Yeah. As far as we can tell, my dad is just gone.
Allen the Alien: That is super weird for a Viltrumite. They don't just give up. They're relentless. They destroyed my world when my people rebelled against them. They blew up our planet rather than lose it.
Invincible: Jesus... I'm sorry.
Allen the Alien: Don't be. From the sounds of it, I'm the one who should be apologizing. If I'd checked my orders properly, I would've seen that Earth was flagged for Viltrumite takeover. I could have warned you.
Invincible: I would have just gone to my dad and told him everything. Who knows what would have happened then?
Allen the Alien: I can't imagine what you're going through. Literally. Like, I have no concept of it. With my home world gone, my people had to create breeding camps just to stop us from going extinct. I've never even met my father.
Invincible: After the last few days, I'm jealous.
Allen the Alien: The Coalition of Planets will want to hear about you. A power struggle's brewing in the farthest reaches of space.
Invincible: What kind of power struggle?
Allen the Alien: The Coalition is trying to unite enough worlds to stop the Viltrumite empire. The thing is... no one's even heard of a Viltrumite abandoning their post. It's insane. It just doesn't happen. This could be the advantage we've been looking for.
Invincible: Sure. Let me know if I can do anything to help.
Allen the Alien: I don't get why you're smiling?
Invincible: Just thinking about everything I've been through. How huge it all feels. But the fact it's just a small part of something much larger makes it all seem more... manageable. I don't know. But it helps.
Allen the Alien: Sorry to rain on your parade. That happens on Earth, right? Anyway, once they find out your father took off, the Viltrumites are gonna come for you. Trust me, when they set their sights on a planet, they don't give up without a fight.
Invincible: I'll be ready.
Allen the Alien: I hope so. What's the plan in the meantime?
[montage of scenes of various villains to the tune of "Hate To Say I Told You So" by The Hives, and Cecil watching as Sinclair produces more Reanimen; cut back to Invincible and Allen]
Invincible: Finish high school, I guess.
Allen the Alien: Oh, all right. Good. Sounds good. [cut to black] What is high school?

Invincible Presents: Atom Eve (Special Episode) edit

Eve (Age 12): I see it all now. Every single molecule around us. I can touch them, taste them, control them. I could rearrange your cells to make you whole new people from the monsters you are. You've ruined my life. Took everything from me. Killed people I didn't even know I loved! I am Samantha Eve Wilkins, and I DEFY you to even REMEMBER who I am!

Season 2 edit

A Lesson For Your Next Life edit

Invincible (Alternate Universe): People of Earth... we know you all feel like we're the bad guys because my dad and I took over your planet. But you're going to be part of the Viltrum Empire now. That means no one goes hungry, no one dies from cancer, and no one ever messes with Earth again. Look, I didn't get it at first either. But I came around and you will come around, too. And in the long run, you'll thank us. But you need to remember, the more you resist, the worse this gets. We didn't destroy your cities. You destroyed them by fighting back. Your new Viltrumite rulers are on the way and it's time to join us in welcoming them. And if you still think you can stop us, don't forget I'm... Invincible.

(in a mid-credit scene, one of the Maulers bursts out of the debris)
Mauler: I told him not to take off the damn helmet! (we see that half of his body is horribly disfigured. Then, he hears a groaning nearby) Brother? Is that you? (he digs up the debris to see who it is. He exclaims in shock to see Levi, whose body is horrifically scarred, and his brain overextended) How are you even breathing?
Angstrom Levi: (labored breathing) What...? What did he do to me?!
Mauler: You did that to yourself. (referring to his own scars) And this to me.
Angstrom Levi: He did this. Made me a freak. He ruined everything! (groans in pain) He killed so many... people I knew. People I loved. (tears up) Millions dead because of him.
Mauler: (scoffs) Your brain's scrambled. You've lost track of what memories are yours and which come from the others.
Angstrom Levi: They're all my memories! All of them!
Mauler: You need a hospital.
Angstrom Levi: (coughs up blood, panting) No. I need revenge. I need to make him PAY! I WON'T REST UNTIL I'VE KILLED...!!!
(the show's title card is presented, now in a black background with red letters. It begins crackling. Back in scene, Levi is shown teleporting away)
Mauler: Fine. Go. Don't worry about me. Just had half my body melted helping you mutilate yourself. That's the last time I work for anyone else ever!

In About Six Hours, I Lose My Virginity to a Fish edit

Invincible: What is it with you and historical monuments? S... Uh, Professor Seismic, right?
Doc Seismic: Doc Seismic. I never taught.

Invincible: I can't marry a fish. I have a girlfriend.

This Missive, This Machination! edit

Thaedus: (after Allen tells the Coalition of Planets about Mark's existence and his conflict against Nolan) Viltrumite against Viltrumite? That has not happened since the great purge.

(upon arriving in Thraxa, Mark is met with Thraxa's ruler. To his shock, Thraxa's ruler is Nolan)

Omni-Man: Hello, son. It's been a while.
Invincible: Dad?

It's Been a While edit

Omni-Man: Mark! Loo-- I made a mistake. And I've thought about you every day since--
Invincible: A mistake?!
Omni-Man: Son...
Invincible: No, you don't get to call me that anymore!
Omni-Man: What do you want me to say, Mark?
Invincible: You could've started with "I'm sorry"! You know what? Don't bother, alright? It wouldn't mean anything anyway. I hope you like it here with your new friends. I guess they don't know you the way that I do. Fuck you.

Omni-Man: Nowalzog wasn't lying to you; his people do need your help. Let me tell you why--
Invincible: I don't care!
Omni-Man: I know that's not true.

[Omni-Man shows Mark his alien little brother.]
Invincible: You gotta be f-- [Cue title card. It cracks, another piece falling. Back to Mark.] Fucking kidding me!

Kregg: Good, you're alive.
Invincible: My dad... what are you doing--?
Kregg: Don't speak. Listen. My name is General Kregg. You've survived your first true battle in proving yourself worthy of your Viltrumite heritage.
Invincible: Go fսck your--
Kregg: [punches him in the face, then nonchalantly shakes the blood off his hand] Your father will be executed, and you will return to Earth. You will assume his mission and prepare the planet for our rule. I know this may not appeal to you, given your sympathies, so I'll put it like this: you can kill a few humans to convince them to capitulate, or we will kill millions if we arrive to find you or your planet still defiant against us. We will check on your progress soon. And unlike your father, we do not change our minds. Good luck on your mission.

This Must Come as a Shock edit

Thaedus: I am the only Viltrumite to ever rebel against the empire. At least, until you told me about Invincible. Allen, I need you to go back to earth and bring Invincible here. He is the key to turning the tide of this war.

It's Not That Simple edit

I'm Not Going Anywhere edit

Allen the Alien: (after taking a punch from Anissa, and surviving without any major injury) Last time that hurt a lot more.
