Fallout 3 is a 2008 action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The third major installment in the Fallout series, it is the first game to be developed by Bethesda after acquiring the rights to the franchise from Interplay Entertainment. The game marks a major shift in the series by using 3D graphics and real-time combat, replacing the 2D isometric graphics and turn-based combat of previous installments.

"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely."

  • What about you? What kind of person are you going to be?
    • James
  • Come on over here. I want to show you something. See that? It was your mother's favorite passage. It's from the Bible. Revelation 21:6. "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely." She always loved that.

Finally... hope. Isn't it worth taking a risk to give that hope to people?
Narrator: For on that fateful day, when fire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Vault 101 slid closed and never reopened. It was here you were born. It is here you will die. Because in Vault 101: no one ever enters, and no one ever leaves.

Snowflake: [coughs] Terrible air down here... oh, oh! Hey! Look at that! A human! With hair! Hey, you think we can do somethin' about that?
Lone Wanderer: About what? My hair?
Snowflake: Yeah, man! That's what I do, I cut hair. I know, I know, you look around here and there ain't a lot of work to show off, right? These corpses only got half a head of the stuff, so I never get a chance to work on a full head. Come on! No charge!
Lone Wanderer: How does a Ghoul end up as a barber?
Snowflake: I prefer 'stylist' myself, but whatever works for you. Everyone has a gift, you know? I used to live in Rivet City. Folks there had enough money for me to do okay, but after I, uh... changed, no one would let me touch them. I ended up here. Of course a Ghoul with a barber shop makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine so... fuck it. I just took up Jet! At least it passes the time, you know?
Lone Wanderer: Are you taking Jet over here?
Snowflake: Well... yeah. So? What else do I have to do except get high? You think that I need to be sober to cut a Ghoul's hair? Half of the work is cuttin' the skin off. These guys don't care how they look anyway, they just humor me.

James: You remember the Bible passage, about the waters of life? It's more than just a poster on a wall. Your mother and I, we lived by that ideal. Water, clean and free, for everyone in the Wasteland! Think about that for a moment. No more radiation sickness, no more mutated crops, no more struggling just to stay alive. Finally... hope. Isn't it worth taking a risk to give that hope to people?

Col. Autumn: By the authority of the President, this facility is now under United States Government control. The person in charge is to step forward immediately and turn over all materials related to this project.
James: That's quite impossible. This is a private project, the Enclave has no authority here. I'm going to have to ask you to leave at once.
Col. Autumn: Am I to assume, sir, that you are in charge?
James: Yes, I'm responsible for this project.
Col. Autumn: Then I repeat, sir, that you are hereby instructed to immediately hand over all materials related to the purifier.
James: I'm sorry, but that's-
Col. Autumn: Furthermore, you are to assist Enclave scientists in assuming control of the administration and operation of this facility at once.
James: Colonel - is it colonel? -, I'm sorry but the facility isn't operational. It never has been. I'm afraid you are wasting your time here.
Col. Autumn: Sir, this is the LAST time I'm going to repeat myself. Stand down at once and turn over control of this facility.
James: Colonel, I assure you that this facility will not function. We have never been able to successfully replicate test results.
Col. Autumn: (kills a scientist) I suggest you comply immediately, sir, in order to prevent any more incidents. Are we clear?
James: Yes, colonel. I'll do whatever you want, there's no need for more violence.
Col. Autumn: Then you will immediately hand over all materials related to this project and aid us in making it operational at once.
James: Very well, give me a few moments to get the system online.
Col. Autumn: ...enough of these delays! (may sometimes instead say "I grow tried of waiting!")
James: It'll only be a few more moments... (explosion, sirens, everyone inside collapses) Run... run! (dies)

Colonel Autumn: You again. I can't say I'm surprised. You and your ilk seem hell-bent on destroying everything our government has worked to achieve. There's nothing to stop me from killing you this time. Let's end this.
Lone Wanderer: Give it up, Autumn. You've lost.
Col. Autumn: I beg to differ! The Enclave is at the height of its power! Once this facility is operational, the masses will flock to the Enclave for fresh water, protection, and a plan for the future.
Lone Wanderer: Why are you doing this? Why give your allegiance to a machine?
Col. Autumn: I am sworn to protect the Presidency. The chain of command must be upheld. I wouldn't expect you to understand.
Lone Wanderer: Eden betrayed you. You see this vial? He trusts me more than he trusts you.
Col. Autumn: That's not true! That plan was abandoned months ago! He would never go behind my back!
Lone Wanderer: But you know he has. He sent me to do a job that you wouldn't.
Col. Autumn: You could've stolen the vial. It means nothing! It proves nothing!
Lone Wanderer: You know I'm telling the truth. Eden, the Enclave... both have betrayed you.
Col. Autumn: I am in charge here! I am the Enclave!
Lone Wanderer: If you're in charge, then you can stop the plans of some mad machine.
Col. Autumn: Stop? Are you out of your mind? There's nothing else to be done! We will push forward, and we will prevail!
Lone Wanderer: Just walk away. It's not too late.
Col. Autumn: And you... you would just let me leave? How can I be sure you won't just shoot me once I turn my back on you? I suppose it doesn't matter much now. Very well. I shall leave you to your fate.

About Fallout 3

Life is absent where it isn't hanging on by a thread. ~ Erik Brudvig

The war did more than crumble the United States government and its infrastructure. It left behind a reminder of man's transgressions. ~ Erik Brudvig
  • When the vault door rolls back and you step into the sun for the first time, the sense of awe and wonder as you gaze across the wasteland that was once the United States' capital is palpable. Life is absent where it isn't hanging on by a thread. Few buildings remain standing, most reduced to piles of rubble. In the distance you can see what was downtown Washington, D.C., a standing but wrecked Washington Monument dominates the skyline as the tallest remaining structure. You can already tell this game is going to be extraordinary.
And then your thoughts turn to survival, just as they have for every other human; for every feral dog; for everything.
  • The war did more than crumble the United States government and its infrastructure. It left behind a reminder of man's transgressions. The effects of radiation are felt everywhere, none more strongly than in the water. Thirst and desperation are constants in Fallout 3 and you won't know the true definition of either until you drink irradiated water from a toilet to gain a few health points. Water and food can heal you, but almost everything has been poisoned by radiation. You'll have to use medicine to manage the levels of radiation you take in from eating, drinking or wandering into hot zones, creating an unending give and take that underscores the struggle for survival that everyone you meet faces.
Such pressure could make even a good man do bad things. For those who are already bad, it provides the excuse to do great evil and take advantage of the weak. You will have to decide where you fit in this world. If you want to be good, there are beggars to give water to and people that need a champion. If you want to be bad, well let's just say that you won't have any problem finding places to ruin lives. If you haven't figured it out yet, this is not a game for kids or anybody with a developing moral compass. Foul language is pervasive and that is often the smallest sin on screen. Fallout 3 shies away from sexual content and giving you the option to kill little kids, but that's about it. The world is filled with twisted people who do nasty things and you yourself are often presented with the option to perform terrible, terrible acts. Several times while playing as an evil character I found the situations so extreme and wholly wicked that I had trouble taking the low road.
  • Superficially, the world that Bethesda has created for Fallout 3 seems like Oblivion with a Fallout paint job. It has that same go-anywhere-pick-up-anything freedom, but where Oblivion often felt sparse and desolate, Fallout 3's world is teeming with the sort of mangled life you'd expect from a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Even when roaming the barren wastelands outside major cities, you're never more than a few meters from a burned-out car or a knife-wielding raider. Yes, it's something we should expect from these open-world role-playing titles — yet it's done so well in Fallout 3 that it feels novel and immersive.
  • Fallout 3's story seems like a similarly well-crafted re-creation of the classic tales of the first two Fallout games, at first, but after a few hours longtime fans will realize that the whole thing feels a bit off. It took me nearly 15 hours of gameplay to figure out what exactly felt wrong.
And then it dawned on me: Nothing in Fallout 3 is funny.
Certainly, you'd expect a post-apocalyptic wasteland to be depressingly bleak. But what the first two Fallout titles did so well was to show that even in the darkest of times, the irreverent human spirit remains.
  • It's a wasteland, but we want to have enough density, and points of interest, clutter, trash in the destroyed world. So at first glance it's barren, it's empty looking, but pretty soon after exploration you'll find every ruined house has something to poke your nose into, there's a raider camp set up over by this school--there's a lot of density.
  • Aesthetically and aurally, Fallout 3 is amazing.
The entire world is decrepit and properly nihilistic, the characters you encounter are simultaneously dirty and pretty and every sound -- from gunshots to the barking of attack dogs -- sounds simply fantastic.
