Strategies

Well, I'd like you to share my secret ... technically it isn't my own strategy :-p My own is a combined one with "Recentchanges" method and "Newuserlog" - on the latter you may see "contribs" colored in two ways: blue and red. And blue contrib links mean they made at least one edit. Then I click their talk pages if those links are still red (and not they are therefore not yet welcomed). --Aphaia 14:28, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm sure none of these welcoming strategies are original with any of us. I was just referring to who uses them, not who started them. The only thing I started was a total registered-user welcoming campaign here, and I don't recall announcing anything, just doing it. (We didn't even have a formal Welcoming Committee until Essjay started his policy buildup effort a couple of months later.) I only started doing welcomes myself when I noticed Aphaia and others doing it apparently through RC. This update will make you all happy...

I spent a couple hours today on AWB, searching through the new users log and welcoming users that hadn't been welcomed yet. As of right now (03:21, 7 February 2007 (UTC)), all of the users have been welcomed (over 5000). I only welcomed about 20 during that AWB run tonight, so that means that you guys did a real lot. Anons

Statistics as of January says 60% of edits were done anonymously. It's a very high ratio comparing with other English projects (on ENWP 30%, on ENWT, WB, WS 10%>).

We are better to pay more attention to anoymous editors? Or there is no urgent need to change?

I assume we don't have a welcome template for them yet... we have many anons editing the English Wikiquote and welcoming them would be helpful for them. They might even want to create account! Any ideas on a welcome template for anons (if it hasn't been created yet...)? -- RyanCross (talk) 21:18, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Actually, we do. Oddly enough, it's {{anon}}, also known as {{welcomeip}}. Typically, one uses it like so:

{{subst:welcomeip}} ~ ~~~~

(I'm not crazy about a name like "anon", since it doesn't imply what it does about an "anon", so I prefer "welcomeip". But since we typically do substitutions for welcome templates, it really doesn't matter which name you use.) Hope this helps. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 05:34, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
