The Babel template allows for the addition of user language templates to aid in multilingual communication by making it easier to contact someone who speaks a certain language. Any user can place the template on their user page by following the instructions below:
- Start off with {{Babel-
- Then add the number of language templates you want to display, followed by |
- e.g. {{Babel| for three languages
- Next add one of the following codes for each language you speak or understand, separated by |, where xx is the Wikiquote code for the language. The general usage of each code level is as follows (note that not all languages have all levels):
- xx-0 if you don't understand the language at all. Don't use it for every language you don't know; only when there is some reason why you might be expected to know it.
- xx-1 for basic ability - enough to understand written material or simple questions in this language.
- xx-2 for intermediate ability - enough for editing or discussions.
- xx-3 for advanced level - though you can write in this language with no problem, some small errors might occur.
- xx-4 for 'near-native' level - although it's not your first language from birth, your ability is something like that of a native speaker.
- xx-5 for professional writers and copyeditors.
- xx (no dash or number) is to indicate that you are a "native speaker" who has grown up speaking this language.
- Then finish by adding closing braces: }}

For example, {{Babel|en|it-1}} would indicate a native English speaker with a basic knowledge of Italian, and produce the babel to the right.
You can also add stand-alone language templates by following the {{User xx-1}} format.
Currently, Wikiquote does not have many language templates. If you speak a language that does not yet exist as a template, create it! Make sure to create a respective category for the new language template.
