Umaru Musa Yar'Adua (16 August 1951 – 5 May 2010) was the second President of Nigeria's Fourth Republic. He served as governor of Katsina State in northern Nigeria from May 29, 1999 to May 28, 2007. He was declared the winner of the controversial Nigerian presidential election held on April 21, 2007, and was sworn in on May 29, 2007. He was a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).
