Before you die, you see … the ring. (taglines)

Rachel Keller

edit
  • I think before you die, you see the ring …
  • She wanted that child more than anything in the world. How could she have done that?
  • She just wanted to be heard.
  • Sometimes children yell, or cry … or draw pictures.

Aidan Keller

edit
  • She's in the dark place now.
  • Don't you understand, Rachel? She never sleeps.
  • It's going to keep going, isn't it? She'll never stop...What about the person we show it to? What happens to them?

Samara Morgan

edit
  • Seven days.
  • Round we go, the world is spinning. When it stops, it's just beginning. Sun comes up, we laugh and we cry. Sun goes down, and then we all die …
  • I love my mommy.

Miscellaneous

edit
  • Noah: [about the cursed videotape] That was very student film.
  • Richard Morgan: What is it with reporters? You take one person's tragedy and force the world to experience it … spread it like sickness.
  • Anna Morgan: All I ever wanted was you.

Dialogue

edit
Katie: Do you have any idea how many electro-rays are traveling through our head every minute?
Becca: I got a better one. Have you heard about this videotape that kills you when you watch it?
Katie: What kind of tape?
Becca: A tape. A regular tape. People rent it, I don't know. You start to play it, and it's like somebody's nightmare. Then suddenly, this woman comes on … smiling at you, right? Seeing you, through the screen. And as soon as it's over, your phone rings. Someone knows you've watched it. And what they say is, 'You will die in seven days'. And exactly seven days later …
Katie: Who told you that?
Becca: Somebody from Revere, I don't …
Katie: Who told you?!
Becca: What's your problem?
Katie: I've watched it.
Becca: It's a story, Katie.
Katie: No, me and Josh, we saw it last weekend.
Becca: I thought you were with your parents.
Katie: I wanted to tell you.
Becca: You were with Josh all weekend?
Katie: Some of his friends got this-this place up in the mountains. They were trying to record a football game. I guess the reception was so bad …
Becca: What are you talking about?
Katie: Listen to me! When we played the tape, the game wasn't there. It was …
Becca: What? Wh-What was it?
Katie: It was something else. We thought it was some kind of sick joke … and then the phone rang. It was a week ago … a week ago tonight.

Teacher: [referring to Katie] I know that Aidan recently lost his cousin …
Rachel: Yes, and I'm doing what I can to find him some good daycare …
Teacher: That's not what I meant. By all means, take your time. I know they were very close, Aidan and his cousin.
Rachel: They spent a few nights a week together.
Teacher: Did he talk to you about her death?
Rachel: Well, like you said, he's not the talkative type.
Teacher: That doesn't mean he has nothing to say.
Rachel: He knows I'm there.
Teacher: Yes, I'm sure he does. But he may be expressing himself in … other ways. I'd like to show you something. [takes out several pictures showing a girl buried underground]
Rachel: That's his cousin. That's Katie.
Teacher: Miss Keller, I'm bothered by these drawings.
Rachel: Listen, I appreciate your concern, but my son lost his best friend three nights ago and he's just trying to deal with it.
Teacher: Yes, I understand, but these pictures …
Rachel: … are Aidan's way of working it out. Of expressing himself, like you said. He'll be okay.
Teacher: You say that she died three nights ago?
Rachel: Yes.
Teacher: Aidan drew these last week.

Rachel: Would you say that I'm gullible?
Noah: No.
Rachel: Easily rattled?
Noah: Definitely not. I mean, you're a little highly strung, maybe.

Noah: You sure this is a copy?
Rachel: Yeah. Why?
Noah: The numbers are all screwed up.
Rachel: Same problem got copied, I guess.
Noah: It's impossible. The numbers of the control track, they're put on the tape whenever it's recorded, which means, theoretically, there shouldn't be any images.
Rachel: Hey, Noah, can you pretend for one minute that I don't read Video Geek Magazine?
Noah: Okay, when you record a tape, the makeup of the tracks is like a signature for whatever did the recording, like a camcorder, VCR, whatever. So the control track can tell us where it came from. But to not have one, I mean, that's like being born without fingerprints.

Rachel: Honey, the house you drew for me …
Aidan: Uh-huh.
Rachel: Where did you see it? Did you see it in your head? Is that why you drew it?
Aidan: In my head?
Rachel: Aidan, why did you draw that house?
Aidan: 'Cause she told me to.
Rachel: Who? Who told you to?
Aidan: The little girl.
Rachel: She talks to you?
Aidan: No, she shows me things.
Rachel: Did she show you the horses?
Aidan: She doesn't like it in the barn. The horses keep her up at night.
Rachel: So she still lives there?
Aidan: No, she lives in a dark place now.

Dr. Grasnik: [about Anna] She wanted a child more than anything, poor Anna. They tried hard for years, but, sometimes it's just not meant to be. Then one winter they went away; when they came back it was with Samara. Adopted, they said. Never did say from where. Said the mother died of complications. But, they had their baby, they had their horses, everything was fine. Until Anna started coming to see me. Said she was suffering visions. Seeing things. Horrible things. Like they'd been burned inside her. And it only happened around Samara. Like the girl put them there.
Rachel: Were you Samara's doctor too? [Grasnik nods] Was there anything wrong with her?
Dr. Grasnik: You mean medically?
Rachel: I mean whatever you mean.
Dr. Grasnik: When Darby there was born, we knew something wasn't right with him. But, we loved him anyway. Takes work, you know. Some people have limits.
Rachel: So, what happened to her?
Dr. Grasnik: I referred them to a neuropsychiatric on the mainland. I assume she's still there.
Rachel: You don't know? How can you not know?
Dr. Grasnik: We've been through a lot of hard years out here. Mean winters, small hauls, no fish. And that was long before the horses. See, when you live on an island, you catch a cold, it's everybody's cold.
Rachel: No offense, ma'am, but what the hell does that mean?
Dr. Grasnik: It means ever since that girl's been gone, things have been better.

Library Clerk: 1978. Man, we're really going back in time, here.
Noah: Yeah, lady at reception said it should still be here.
Library Clerk: Should be. You say you're the patient's father, right?
Noah: Yep, Richard Morgan, that's me.
Library Clerk: What is your secret?
Noah: Diet and exercise, man.
Library Clerk: No shit.
Noah: Yeah, that's all it takes.
Library Clerk: You know, I'm not an idiot. You try and walk out of here with my file, and I'll be on you like white on rice, you understand?
Noah: Yeah, man. I just want to watch it.
Library Clerk: I'm responsible for every file tape in here. I have a system. And I don't want anyone disarranging it.
Noah: I'd never … disarrange …
Library Clerk: As long as we understand each other. [he opens the tape case, it's empty] Okay, now I'm mad.
Noah: Does it say who was the last person to watch it?
Library Clerk: Yeah. It was you.

Rachel: What did you do to her?! She was your daughter! You killed Samara, didn't you? You killed her, and when your wife found out …
Richard Morgan: MY WIFE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE A CHILD!

Noah: I can't imagine being stuck down a well all alone like that. How long could you survive?
Rachel: Seven days.

Aidan: What happened to the girl?
Rachel: Samara?
Aidan: Is that her name?
Rachel: M-hm.
Aidan: Is she still in the dark place?
Rachel: No. We set her free.
Aidan: You helped her?
Rachel: Yeah.
Aidan: Why did you do that?
Rachel: What's wrong, honey?
Aidan: You weren't supposed to help her.

Dr. Scott: You don't want to hurt anyone.
Samara Morgan: But I do, and I'm sorry. It won't stop.
