The guy did a Peter Pan right off of this dam, right here!

Detective Kelly edit

  • We just got word from the U.S. Marshals that our old friend Richard Kimble is alive and well and has decided to come back home to Chicago. Now, we all know what high regard we hold for this scumbag, so I am personally donating a bottle of 12-year old Scotch to whoever puts the collar on this quack.

Dialogue edit

[The Kimbles are driving home from a charity ball]
Helen Kimble: Thank you for coming with me to that charity ball. I know how much you hate those functions, but God, I love looking at you in a tux.
Dr. Richard Kimble: I just feel I look like I'm a waiter or something. [Kimble's car phone rings; he switches it to a hands-free mode] Hello?
Chicago Memorial employee: Dr. Kimble?
Dr. Richard Kimble: Yes, it is.
Chicago Memorial employee: Sorry to bother you, sir, but Dr. Stevens just went into emergency OR and asks if you could give him a hand on this one.
Dr. Richard Kimble: All right, call him back. Tell him I'll be right there.
Chicago Memorial employee: Thank you, doctor.
Dr. Richard Kimble: Yep, thank you. Good night. [hangs up]
Helen Kimble: I'll wait up for you.
[Scene flash-forwards to police station where Dr. Kimble is being interrogated]
Helen Kimble: I'll wait up for you...I'll wait up for you.
[Richard Kimble is traumatized recalling the final conversation he had with his wife]

[Kimble sees Copeland has escaped the train wreck. Copeland unlocks Kimble's handcuffs]
Copeland: Now you listen, and you listen good. I don't care which way you run. Just don't follow me, got it?
[Copeland starts to leave]
Dr. Richard Kimble: Hey Copeland?
[Copeland turns around]
Dr. Richard Kimble: Be good.
[Both chuckle and leave]

[Gerard and the sheriff are interviewing the prison guard who survived the bus wreck and train derailment]
Old Prison Guard: ...the bus rolls over several times before it settled at the bottom of the hill here. I don't know if I passed out or what, but, when I looked up, the train was bearing down on us. Fast. I don't know how, uh, it's-still kinda hazy, but, somehow I grabbed him and---and I pushed him out of the bus.
Sheriff Rollins: You're a brave man. You could've both been killed.
Old Prison Guard: Yeah, I know! But, hell, he's my partner. He would have done the same for me.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Excuse me, sheriff, I'm United States Marshal Samuel Gerard. I'd like to talk to you-
Sheriff Rollins: [sincerely] Uh, I'll be with you in just a minute. [turns his attention back to the guard]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: OK.
Sheriff Rollins: One more time. Just for the record, uh, these three are dead? [He shows the guard photos of Carlson, Copeland and Pernilla]
Old Prison Guard: Yeah.
Sheriff Rollins: And, uh, this one? [shows the guard a sheet with Kimble's mugshot; the guard looks at it closely]
Old Prison Guard: Well, everything happened so fast. Uh.... no, I don't think he made it. [The sheriff turns back to Gerard]
Sheriff Rollins: Well, looks like you came a long way for nothin'.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: With all due respect, uh, Sheriff Rollins, I'd like to recommend checkpoints on a fifteen mile radius at I-57, I-24, and over here on Route 13 east of Chester-
Sheriff Rollins: Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa, wait a minute: uh, the prisoners are all dead. The only thing checkpoints are gonna do is get a lot of good people frantic around here and flood my office with calls.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Well, shit, Sheriff, I would really hate to see that happen, so I guess I'll take over your investigation. [Rollins looks at him incredulously]
Sheriff Rollins: [scoffs] On what authority?
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Governor of the State of Illinois, United States Marshal's Office, Fifth District, Northern Illinois. [pause]
Sheriff Rollins: All right, fine. Uh, you want jurisdiction over this mess? [hands the file over to Gerard] You got it. [to his deputies] Okay boys, gather around here and listen up! Uh, we're shuttin' it down, Wyatt Earp's here to mop up.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: That's funny. "Wyatt Earp". [Biggs shoulders his way through the crowd]
Marshal Bobby Biggs: Excuse me. Sam! Sam! [Gerard looks at what's in Biggs' hands]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Oh, wow, gee whiz! Look here! [dangles a set of unshackled leg irons in front of the guard] You know, we're always fascinated when we find leg irons with no legs in them! Who held the keys, sir?
Old Prison Guard: Me.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Where are those keys at?
Old Prison Guard: I don't know.
Deputy Erin Poole: Care to revise your statement, sir?
Old Prison Guard: What?
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Do you want to change your bullshit story, sir? [Poole shows the photo of Kimble to the guard]
Old Prison Guard: [after looking at it for a few seconds] He mighta got out.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: "He mighta got out"?
Sheriff Rollins: What the hell is this?! A minute ago you're telling me was part of the wreckage! Now he might have gotten out?!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Listen up, ladies and gentlemen! Our fugitive has been on the run for 90 minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 4 miles per hour and that gives us a radius of... 6 miles. What I want out of each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's name is Doctor Richard Kimble. Go get him.

[Gerard and his Marshals are working out of a mobile base at the train wreck scene]
Deputy Poole: Chester Police just found a blood trail! Two miles, southeast.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Robert?
Marshal Bobby Biggs: Yo!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Type that blood, match it against all four prisoners. Renfro?
Marshal Cosmo Renfro: Yo!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Get a fax ID on Kimble to every local hospital. And follow with the troopers. Newman?
Marshal Noah Newman: Yes?
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: What are you doing?
Marshal Noah Newman: I'm thinking.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Well think me up a cup of coffee and a chocolate donut with some of those little sprinkles on top, will you? As long as you're thinking?

[Kimble has disguised himself as a doctor to leave the hospital, and spots a cop with his wanted poster coming down the hall; Kimble curses to himself]
State Trooper: Hey, Doc! We're looking for a prisoner from that bus-train wreck a couple of hours ago, might be hurt.
Dr. Richard Kimble: Uh, what does he look like?
State Trooper: 6'1, 180, brown hair, brown eyes, beard. See anyone like that around?
Dr. Richard Kimble: Every time I look in the mirror, pal - except for the beard, of course! [starts to leave, but then...]
State Trooper: Doc?
Dr. Richard Kimble: [hesitates, thinking he's about to get caught] Yeah? [The trooper points at Kimble's crotch to indicate to Kimble that his fly is down]

[Kimble sees the wounded guard from the prison bus arriving at the local hospital in an ambulance; he helps the paramedics who are having difficulty unfolding the wheels on the gurney]
Dr. Richard Kimble: Tell the attending he's got a puncture in the epigastric area. [Leaves; the paramedics are dumbstruck]
Paramedic: How the hell could he tell that by looking at his face?

Marshal Bobby Biggs: Sam!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: What?
Marshal Bobby Biggs: We just got a call from Harris Community Hospital. The wounded guard swears he saw Kimble outside the emergency room!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Well, that's odd.
Marshal Bobby Biggs: And an ambulance is missing.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Where's he going in an ambulance?

[Gerard and Renfro enter the sewers to look for Kimble]
Cosmo Renfro: Shit, I just bought these shoes!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Shut up, Cosmo.

[Kimble points Gerard's gun at him]
Dr. Richard Kimble: I didn't kill my wife!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: I don't care!

Cosmo Renfro: [after Kimble has just leapt off the dam to escape] What happened? Where'd he go?
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: The guy did a Peter Pan right off of this dam, right here!
Cosmo Renfro: What?
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Yeah! BOOM! [Laughs in amazement]
Cosmo Renfro: Holy shit! All Right, Can we go home now?
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: No.

Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: I wanna see a helicopter come over here, 100 feet off this river--make him aware of these wires...
Marshal Bobby Biggs: Sam, what are you, out of your mind?! He's dead!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: That ought to make him easy to catch. Hounds! I want hounds on both banks of this river for two miles upstream and downstream. You guys got a search-and-rescue team in this county? Get them down here and drag the bottom of this spillway. How come they haven't turned off the water?
Deputy Poole: Somebody from County's working on it.

State Police Captain: Marshal, I do not want to tell you how to do your job, but only one person in a million could survive that fall! The guy is fish food!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: OK, get a cane pole, go catch the fish that ate him.

[Gerard has just shot and killed Copeland, who was holding Noah Newman at gunpoint]
Deputy Noah Newman: I can't hear anything. My My ears uh.... I can't believe you did that.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: You think I should have bargained with that guy?
Deputy Noah Newman: Yeah, I do. You could've missed. You Could've killed me.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Yeah?
Deputy Noah Newman: Yeah.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: How bad's that ear?
Deputy Noah Newman: It's terrible. I'm gonna have permanent hearing damage.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Let me see it. Come here. [Newman lowers his head] Can you hear what I'm saying now?
Deputy Noah Newman: Yeah.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: [whispering] I...don't...bargain. You hear that?
Deputy Noah Newman: Yeah.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Okay.

[Gerard is on the phone in his office]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: What can I tell you, sir? Mr. Copeland was a bad man. He was gonna kill one of my kids. [listens] Well, sir, you can blame me, I mean I'm the one who shot him. [sets down the receiver and hands the file on Copeland over to another agent, then heads into a conference room where his other deputies are listening to the tapped phone call Kimble made to his lawyer] So he showed up not dead yet. [closes the doors behind him] Let that be a lesson to you, boys and girls. Don't ever argue with the big dog. The big dog is always right. [Biggs barks like a happy dog; Gerard leans back in his chair]
Deputy Poole: Yeah you've been right before. [Gerard laughs dryly]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: All right. [The techs play the phone call from the beginning; as the conversation plays, we hear a bell ringing in the background; at the point where Walter asks Kimble for his location, the rumbling of a train passing overhead can be heard]
Marshal Henry: I might be crazy, but that train sounds like an 'L'.
Deputy Bobby Biggs: St. Louis doesn't have an elevated train.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: How do you know it's an elevated train?
Marshal Stevens: You know, I think he's right. I lived under an 'L' for twenty years.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: [sarcastically] Oh, then you can explain the difference in the sound of an elevated train as opposed to a train that's running along the ground. Play that back. I wanna hear the sounds of an elevated train.
Marshal Cosmo Renfro: All right, now wait a minute. Now What cities have 'L's? uh, New York's got an 'el'.
Deputy Poole: Philly.
Deputy Bobby Biggs: We do.
Marshal Cosmo Renfro: We got an 'el', Milwaukee's got an 'el'.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Hold it right there! When the lawyer says that he sounds guilty, there's bells in the background, there's a guy on a PA. I wanna drop everything but the guy on the PA. Can you do that?
Technician: Yeah, I'll try it. Hold on. [presses a few buttons, rewinds the tape, and presses play; at the point where Walter asks Kimble "Why did you run?" a distinguishable P.A. voice comes on]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Yeah Right there.
PA Announcer on tape: [unintelligible] Next stop...
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: What's he saying? Something like "Next," uh, "stop"? It sounds like "Next stop". Do that again. [The tech rewinds, presses a few more buttons, and replays that portion of the clip; this time, the announcer is more clearly audible]
PA Announcer on tape: Next Stop: Merchandise Mart.
Deputy Poole: [repeating the announcer's words] "Merchandise Mart".
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Son-of-a-bitch, our boy came home.
Marshal Cosmo Renfro: [realizing] That bell, That bell is the bell on the Wells Street Bridge. It's six blocks away.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: I knew that was an elevated train.
Marshal Bobby Biggs: [standing up] Oh yeah, big dog, you're never wrong.

[While Dr. Nichols is driving, Kimble approaches him in bum's clothing]
Dr. Charles Nichols: Oh, my god, Richard!
Dr. Richard Kimble: How are you, Charlie?
Dr. Charles Nichols: Jesus, you're back.
Dr. Richard Kimble: I need some money.
Dr. Charles Nichols: Sure, sure. Get in.
Dr. Richard Kimble: No, I can't. Just whatever you got on you. You're hot, pal. If not now, you will be.
Dr. Charles Nichols: Have you got a place to stay? I mean, how can I help you?
[Police siren blares from a police car a few cars back]
Police officer: [on bullhorn] You have a green light, get going.
Dr. Charles Nichols: Richard...
[Nichols sees that Kimble is long gone]

Marshal Bobby Biggs: It's hinky, Sam. I mean, this guy is a college graduate. He became a doctor. I mean, he ain't gonna go through here with all this security. Hinky.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: What does that mean Biggs, "hinky"?
Marshal Bobby Biggs: I don't know. Strange. Weird.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Well, why don't you say strange or weird? I mean "hinky", that has no meaning.
Marshal Bobby Biggs: Well, we say "hinky".
[Gerard, offended by the rather un-amusing joke, looks at Henry, then Biggs]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: I don't want you guys using words around me that got no meaning. I'm taking the stairs and waking.
Marshal Bobby Biggs: [sotto voice] How about bullshit? How about bullshit, Sam?

Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Doctor Nichols, you really want to help him? You really want to be his friend? Then you'll help us bring him in, unharmed.
Dr. Charles Nichols: Why? So he can go back to prison? [clicks his tongue] If you want help, gentlemen, you've come to the wrong man. Richard is innocent and you'll never find him. He's too smart.
Marshal Bobby Biggs: [sarcastically] Oh well... we're pretty smart guys.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Yeah, what about us?
Cosmo Renfro: Last time I looked.
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Yeah, we're smart. We are. I mean, how smart could he be, really? Is he as smart as you are?
Dr. Charles Nichols: [thinks and considers his answer, smiles] Smarter.

[Detectives Kelly and Rosetti are interrogating the drug dealer Kimble has been hiding out with]
Detective Kelly: All right, let's go over it again from the top. What time did he arrive at the house?
Drug Dealer: Around 10:30 in the morning.
Detective Kelly: And he was alone?
Drug Dealer: Yeah he was alone.
Detective Kelly: And you got a good look at him?
Drug Dealer: Yeah I got a real good look. [Rosetti shows the dealer Kimble's wanted poster]
Detective Rosetti: You better be straight with me, kid. You mean to tell me that this is the guy staying in your mother's basement?
Drug Dealer: That's what I'm tellin' you.

[Kimble walking down the stairs of Chicago City Hall, when Gerard shows up a flight above]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Richard?!!
[Kimble looks up, shocked to realize its Gerard again, and is chased down the stairs then into the first floor lobby, where he tricks the guards theres a situation where they briefly restrain Gerard]
Dr. Richard Kimble: Officer, officer! There's a man in a blue topcoat waiving a gun and screaming…at a woman.
[Gerard bursts into the lobby, pushing past several people and sprinting]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: STOP THAT MAN!!
Marshal Henry: He's a US Marshal, let him go, let him go!
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Close the gates, go! LOCK IT NOW!!!
[the entire team led by Gerard chase Richard towards the exit, when he narrowly gets caught in the closing glass doors and escapes, where the glass turns out to be bulletproof]
Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Agh that door!!

Dr. Richard Kimble: [on a payphone] I found him, Chuck. I found the man who killed Helen.
Dr. Charles Nichols: [on a Hotel phone] What?
Dr. Richard Kimble: It was Me they were after.
Dr. Charles Nichols: Who? Who are "They"?
Dr. Richard Kimble: Devlin MacGregor and Lentz.

[Kimble has just entered the banquet hall and is about to confront Dr. Nichols]

Dr. Charles Nichols: Richard. I'm sorry, I'm in ‘d middle of this speech.
Dr. Richard Kimble: You almost got away with it, didn't you? I know all about it. I can prove it.
Dr. Charles Nichols: Ladies and gentlemen, my friend Richard Kimble doesn't fell well obviously, so...if you'll go on with your dessert and coffee...Richard, do you mind to step aside, and let's talk. Okay. So, uh, I'll be back in... just a second.

[Charles steps down, Richard follows]

Dr. Richard Kimble: You changed the samples, didn't you, huh? You switched the samples! After Lentz died.
Dr. Charles Nichols: Richard, let- [Richard Forces Nichols' arm down]
Host: Let's stay, stay calm, people.
Dr. Richard Kimble: After Lentz died you were the only one who had the access. You switched the samples, And the pathology reports. You kill Lentz, too?! [shoves Charles] Huh?!
Host: Can we get some security in here please?
Dr. Richard Kimble: Huh? Did You?

[turns to crowd]

Dr. Richard Kimble: He falsified his research... so that RDU-90 could be... approved, and... Devlin MacGregor could give you...Provasic.

[Final lines]
Kimble: I thought you said you didn't care.
Gerard: I don't. [They begin laughing] Don't tell anyone, will you?
