The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D

2005 film by Robert Rodriguez

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D (also simply known as Sharkboy and Lavagirl) is a 2005 adventure fantasy comedy film that uses the same anaglyph 3-D technology used in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez. Written by Robert and Marcel Rodriguez.
  • [sarcastically] Wow, Linus, your skills are... weak.
  • HE RUINED MY DREAM JOURNAL!!!
  • I see a--a giant, chocolate chunk marshmallow cookie, with lots of warm milk.
  • If we freeze time with the Crystal Heart, we'll be able to make it to the Dream Lair and save the planet.
  • My book of dreams. That's why everything's so messed up. He's changing it.
  • [to Tobor] I wanted all of my dreams to come true. But I only dreamt for myself. I wanted to escape my real world when the world needed my help to make it a better place. Selfish dreams shouldn't come true.
  • [as Sharkboy runs faster to the volcano, carrying Lavagirl's corpse] I know who you are, Lavagirl. You are not fire, or a simple flame. You are greater than that. Something more important, and so necessary. It is why you must live. You are not destruction. [Sharkboy dumps Lavagirl's body into the volcano] You are not evil. [Lavagirl is resurrected as the volcano erupts] (Lavagirl: Stand back.) You are… light.
  • [confronting Minus] I've become what you feared most… Minus.
  • The following story is true. It might have started as a dream, but as we saw yesterday, when we make our dreams a reality, reality becomes a dream. Sharkboy lives his dream as King of the Ocean. Where he cares for all its creatures. He searches for his father's submarine, where there is no light, except in one place where light shines almost as bright as the sun. It's where Lavagirl lives her dream as queen of Earth's volcanoes that boil at the bottom of the sea. A force of life for all living things. Sharkboy and Lavagirl don't visit me anymore. But I can visit them in my dreams. So dream a better dream, then work to make it real.

Sharkboy

  • [angrily; to Max, about the ocean being froze over] Why'd you do it, Max? Why'd you freeze the ocean?
  • I think you broke my fin.
  • [angrily] Just one punch. He'll be out like a light.
  • [to Tobor] Am I king of the ocean, or what? (Tobor: No. Sorry.)
  • [Max had just imagined a banana split boat in the land of milk and cookies] A banana split?! Still hungry, Max? How 'bout a knuckle sandwich?
  • Sugar will give you nightmares.
  • [covering Max's mouth, preventing him from waking up Lavagirl; quietly] If you wake her up, she'll reheat.
  • LAVAGIRL, THEY'RE BEHIND YOU!
  • That's terrific, LG.
  • Just let her cool down. She's blowing off steam.
  • [enraged] I'll rip his circuits to shreds!
  • Can't... fight... [roaring] MY INSTINCTS!!!

Lavagirl

  • I’m looking for Max.
  • We need your help, Max. Come with us.
  • Everything that is, or was, began with a dream.
  • Ew! Stick to rotten fish, please.
  • I'm fire. She's ice. We must be enemies.
  • [angrily lashing out at Max after accidentally burning his Dream Journal] WHY DID YOU MAKE ME OUT OF LAVA?! WHY, MAX?!
  • I know I can be good. I can feel it. But everything I touch, I destroy. Why did you make me like that? I have more potential. (Max: I'm sure you do.) And why did you make us a team? We're nothing alike. When I'm near water, I fizzle out. When he's near heat, he shrivels. We're not compatible. [While she rants, her hair starts flaming up] (Max: Your...hair's on fire.) Yeah. It does that. [Sharkboy fires water at her hair, putting out the flames] Thanks, Sharky. Maybe I really am evil. So far, everything else you dreamed has been correct. Maybe I just need to learn to accept it.

Mr. Electricidad

edit
  • What I can't believe is...you dreamt me as a big round bad guy! I'm not bad!
  • [after Mr. Electric is destroyed] He's... unplugged!
  • You made me a great teacher today. [Max: How did I do that?] A great teacher learns as much from his students as they do from him. You have...awakened me. [pats Max on the shoulder] Thank you, Max.
  • For every person who dreams up the electric light bulb, there's the one who dreams up the atom bomb.

  • Linus: Hand over the book, or you'll visit the dream world.
  • Mr. Electric: "Watt's" up?
  • Tobor: [repeated line] Yes?

Dialogue

Mr. Electricidad: [staring at the weather outside] Who knows where tornadoes come from? [turns to the students, who are drawing something on their papers] Well, when cold air mixes with hot air, they can form a tornado, as the hot and cold chase each other around and around and around.
Marissa: [draws something on her binder] I dreamt of a story kind of like Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Ice Girl and Dream Boy. Her powers come from her crystal heart.
Mr. Electricidad: [closes Marissa's binder] No more fairy tales.
Student 1: [shows a student her drawing] Pirahna Girl and Beluga Boy.
Student 2: [shows a student his drawing] Plastic Boy and Metal Girl.
Student 3: [shows a student his drawing] Barf Boy and Vomit Girl.
Mr. Electricidad: Does everyone hear me? I'm a teacher, right? Wrong, I'm an awakener. Only I'm finding it more and more difficult to keep my class awake. [Marissa sneezes] And no recess again for you today, Marissa, you have too many allergies. There are more boogers on your homework than there is homework.
Marissa: I'm just...cold.
Max: [enters the classroom and approaches Marissa's table] I'll be happy to change places with you. It's a lot warmer back there in my spot.
Marissa: But I...have to sit up front.
Max: [looks up at the air vent on the ceiling] It's just that you're sitting right under the vent. [Marissa sneezes] And it's August and you're sneezing.
Marissa: You're gonna get me in trouble.
Mr. Electricidad: Max. [Max approaches Mr. Electricidad's desk] Are you, uh, trying to make real friends?
Max: Yeah, trying, like you taught me to.
Mr. Electricidad: That's good. Just not with my daughter, okay?
[Max turns to Marissa, who waves to him. Max turns to Mr. Electricidad]
Max: No, it wasn't like that. It's just--
Mr. Electricidad: Sit down, Max.
[As Max walks to his desk, Linus walks into the classroom and sits down on his desk. Taking off his backpack and putting it down on the floor, Max goes over to him]
Max: [firmly] Give me back my journal.
Mr. Electricidad: Class has begun. Everyone in your seats.
Max: Linus took my journal!
Linus: [stubbornly] I did not!
Mr. Electricidad: Minus! I mean, Linus. You get a minus for misconduct. Give Max back his journal. [without speaking to each other, Linus angrily gives Max back his dream journal out of annoyance, then Max takes it and walks back to his desk, without saying "please" and "thank you", due to him knowing Linus may have done something to it] One more time, Linus, and we'll have to change your name to Minus.
Max: [sits at his desk, goes through his dream journal, shocked to see that Linus has scribbled over the pages after stealing it from him; furiously gets up] HE RUINED MY DREAM JOURNAL!
Linus: I did not! Mr. Electric, send him to the principal's office and have him EXPELLED!
[Max angrily throws his dream journal at Linus' head. Linus furiously turns to Max.]
Mr. Electricidad: You're in my class, not the other way around! I know everything, and you...know nothing. [points to the clock] At the end of class, both of you report to the principal's office...with your parents!
[the wind blows open the windows; Mr. Electricidad closes them, but the wind blows open more windows; Linus picks up Max's dream journal and puts it in his pocket]
Mr. Electricidad: [sees a tornado closing in] EVERYBODY DOWN! [dives behind his desk]
[Sharkboy and Lavagirl burst through the windows and into the classroom; Max peeks his head out from under his desk and sees them]
Marissa: [peeks her head out from under her table and looks at Sharkboy and Lavagirl; whispering] It's them.
[Mr. Electricidad peeks out from under his desk. Lavagirl turns her head at him. Mr. Electricidad ducks back under his table]
Lavagirl: I'm looking for Max.
[all the students point at Max's desk; the students' papers start setting on fire as Lavagirl walks over to Max's desk]
Linus: [sees his paper on fire] She's hot.
[Sharkboy viciously shreds Linus' paper, snarling]
Lavagirl: [reaches Max's desk and lifts it up, seeing Max lying down on the floor, curled up] We need your help, Max. Come with us.
Max: [gets up from the floor and follows her as she sets his desk down] What do I have to do?
Lavagirl: Go with us to Planet Drool. We'll explain on the way.
Max: We're going to Planet Drool?
[Sharkboy uses his claws to scratch a diagram of the solar system and Planet Drool on the chalkboard. Sharkboy looks at Mr. Electricidad, who recoils.]
Lavagirl: It's my home planet. Just outside our solar system. You should know, Max. You made it up.
Max: [looks at the students and then looks at Sharkboy and Lavagirl] I can't go with you.
Lavagirl: Why not?
Sharkboy: Because you're not real. Both of you are just a dream. [closes his eyes] And when I open my eyes...you'll be gone.
[Sharkboy and Lavagirl look at each other; Max opens his eyes and sees that they're gone]
Lavagirl: [both she and Sharkboy appear behind Max] We're still here, Max.
[Max jumps in fear.]
Sharkboy: If you wanna stop the darkness from destroying our worlds, come with us.
Mr. Electricidad: [gets up] You better go with them.
Max: Okay… I'll go!
[Marissa claps cheerfully for him; Max, Sharkboy, and Lavagirl run out of the classroom, with Mr. Electricidad, Linus, Marissa, and the students watching on]
Mr. Electricidad: [to the students] Everyone follow me. We're gonna go find shelter.

Max: [while Lavagirl holds an enraged Sharkboy back from attacking Max] I've seen this before. It's on the tip of my...finger. I-It's a hand! It is a hand. [Sharkboy settles down] A hand. Another hand.
Sharkboy: Yep.
Max: It's Tobor!
Lavagirl: Who?
Max: Tobor. I dreamt him up when I was a kid; A robot that could help me with my homework. I tried to build him once. Everyone kept telling me he would never work.
Sharkboy: So here he is, a forgotten dream in the Dream Graveyard.
Lavagirl: Maybe he can help us.
Max: He's supposed to be very smart. Tobor, awake!
Tobor: [awakens] Yes?
Max: He works! We can ask him anything now.
Lavagirl: Let me! Let me! Tell me something about me. I'm clueless.
Tobor: Actually, you are extremely bright.
Sharkboy: Am I king of the ocean, or what?
Tobor: No. Sorry.
Max: How do I save Planet Drool?
Tobor: The answer is in your dreams.
Sharkboy: [holding out a pipe to knock Max out] You mean if I put him to sleep, he'll dream us out of this mess?
Tobor: No. [Sharkboy hides pipe] At least, not here. Darkness is falling. Any dream of his would become a nightmare, and you don't want those becoming a reality. But if you go to the Land of Milk and Cookies...
Lavagirl: Of course.
Tobor: ...that's where the good dreams are. Where the answers are.
Lavagirl: It's perfect, Max. The Land of Milk and Cookies is a safe, sweet place. You'll be able to dream easily there.
Max: Can you take us?
Tobor: I have no body. I can't move.
Sharkboy: You move your eyes and your mouth.

Sharkboy: Max! Get down here!
[Sharkboy and Lavagirl are having difficulty controlling the Train of Thought]
Max: What's wrong?
Sharkboy: We can't control it!
Max: All you have to do is keep it track.
Sharkboy: How can you keep it on track if there is no track?
Max: [looks out; shocked] Uh-oh.
Sharkboy: Looks like another dream gone bad.
Lavagirl: [nervously] What do we do?
Sharkboy: [comedically calm] Yell? Scream?
[the Train of Thought's horn honks, and Max, Sharkboy and Lavagirl scream in terror]
Lavagirl: [opens the front door] Jump. It'll be alright.
[Lavagirl, Sharkboy and Max jump out, one by one, then the Train of Thought crashes into ice cream, and the back falls off]
Max: What does it mean when your Train of Thought... wrecks?
Sharkboy: Well... [pats Max's shoulder]...it can't be good, buddy.
Lavagirl: How much time do we have, Sharkboy?
Sharkboy: [checks his shark radar] 20 minutes. [steps in something, and takes a taste]
Lavagirl: [disgusted] Ew! Stick to rotten fish, please.
Sharkboy: [spits it out in disgust] Ugh! Chocolate! I stepped in chocolate!
[Max eats the chocolate]
Lavagirl: [happily] We're here. [the camera zooms out to reveal where they are] The Land of Milk and Cookies.
Sharkboy: [taking a short dive on a cookie] Whoo-hoo! Yeah! [puts his hand in the milk] The milk is warm. [shakes his hand dry] He'll be out in no time.
Lavagirl: [to Max] Lay down. Here's a marshmallow pillow.
Sharkboy: How 'bout dreaming us into the Dream Lair?
Max: [wakes up uncomfortably] The ground is thumping too much.
Sharkboy: My highly trained ears hear it, too. [whispers] Boom, boom, boom!
Lavagirl: Let me hear it.
Sharkboy: [warningly] I wouldn't. [Lavagirl lays her head down on the marshmallow, and it turns burnt. She angrily looks at him, but he looks away as if saying, "I warned ya."] Hothead.
Lavagirl: When you dreamt up these giant cookies, who did you expect to be able to eat them?
Max: I really didn't think about it.
Lavagirl: 'Cause if you dream giant cookies, something has to be created to consume giant cookies.
[Cookie giants, who look like Max's parents, appear from behind mountains.]
Sharkboy: [points upwards in alarm] Cookie giants!

[Sharkboy, Lavagirl and Max slide off the cake they landed on]
Sharkboy: [disgusted] Frosting. [spits it out]
Max: [looks at the Cookie Giants] Those Giants almost look like my parents.
Lavagirl: [about the Cookie Giants] They seem happy together. [to Max] Is that your dream?
Max: We had a dream of a family. It hasn't been coming true lately.
Lavagirl: Most dreams don't come true on their own. You have to make them true. It takes a lot of work. Not easy, but not impossible, either.
