This quote is ascribed to Arthur Schopenhauer by Albert Einstein in his book The World as I See It, and though it represents fairly the core lemma of Schopenhauer's essay On the Freedom of the Will, the phrase "Der Mensch kann tun was er will; er kann aber nicht wollen was er will" cannot be found in Schopenhauer's 1839 original essay.
