Unsourced quotes

I removed the unsourced quotes since Gorbachev is a living person, and in general unsourced material about a living person shouldn't be included. How do we know he said any of these things without sources? Steve Dufour 22:38, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

I much prefer to preserve and build upon most of what exists rather than simply remove it from consideration. We have had sections for unsourced quotes of people since the beginning of the project over 4 years ago. Ideally quotes should be sourced, and I strongly recommend making attempts to source quotes added to pages, but if quotations are widely attributed to a person then people should be able to place them on Wikiquote pages in "Unsourced" sections. I rarely add "unsourced" quotes anywhere anymore, and much of my work here now involves sourcing what I have time to, but I do not recommend the removal of quotes which are not obvious vandalism (as at least one of them appeared to have been), especially if they are widely attributed and easily found in a general internet search or Google Book Search. I would much prefer people to take interest in adding interesting source quotes and sourcing things already here properly rather than either adding or erasing unsourced material. ~ Kalki 00:41, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Coming from Wikipedia where there is almost a paranoia about unsourced material on living persons, it seemed kind of odd to me that here that lists of unsourced quotes would be given about them. I could see it about an historical person where it couldn't be confirmed or disproven that they said them. But for living persons it seems like there could be problems. This is doing the rounds on social media, without source: "The [unsourced] most puzzling[unsourced] development in[unsourced] politics during the[unsourced] last decade[unsourced] is the apparent[unsourced] determination of Western [unsourced] European leaders to[unsourced] re-create the Soviet[unsourced] Union in Western[unsourced] Europe."
