• It is somewhat presumptuous to disdain or condemn as fake that which does not appear likely.

My life has been full of terrible misfortunes most of which never happened.

According to the article by Quote Investigator (and they are usually quite thorough), this is not by Michel de Montaigne at all, but it was misquoted by Dale Carnegie.
