I have loved Stowe ever since I first went to see it when I was 20... I hope my happy days at Stowe will continue. There is no end to the things one can paint there and dream about.
There's one very odd thing about painters who like drawing architecture. They hardly ever like drawing the architecture of their own time. I know perfectly well that I would rather paint a ruined abbey half covered with ivy and standing among long grass... and also I would rather paint a new house when it's twenty years old than when its new.
Abstraction is a luxury that has been left to the present day to exploit.
