  • I have loved Stowe ever since I first went to see it when I was 20... I hope my happy days at Stowe will continue. There is no end to the things one can paint there and dream about.
  • There's one very odd thing about painters who like drawing architecture. They hardly ever like drawing the architecture of their own time. I know perfectly well that I would rather paint a ruined abbey half covered with ivy and standing among long grass... and also I would rather paint a new house when it's twenty years old than when its new.
  • Abstraction is a luxury that has been left to the present day to exploit.
  • Abstraction is the way to the heart — it is not the heart itself.
