I think a lot of these are from the Shock and Awe DVD, I'll be viewing it again soon so will hopefully remember to update this page.

Re-Added the quotes below. Unsourced quotes from live shows, etc. are acceptable under wiki rules. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.150.6.100 (talk)

  • Go without a coat when it's cold; find out what cold is. Go hungry; keep your existence lean. Wear away the fat, get down to the lean tissue and see what it's all about. The only time you define your character is when you go without. In times of hardship, you find out what you're made of and what you're capable of. If you're never tested, you'll never define your character.
  • Don't do anything by half. If you love someone, love them with all your soul. When you go to work, work your ass off. When you hate someone, hate them until it hurts.
  • If you hate your parents, the man or the establishment, don't show them up by getting wasted and wrapping your car around a tree. If you really want to rebel against your parents: outlearn them, outlive them, and know more than they do.
  • Nothing brings people together more than mutual hatred
  • It's sad when someone you know becomes someone you knew
  • Sometimes the truth hurts. And sometimes it feels real good.
  • Half of life is fucking up - the other half is dealing with it.
  • D.J. Fuckface puts on a record of someone else's music and calls himself a musician. No. He's a record-player-player.
  • And he busts all the French he knows. Entrepreneurs. Courageous...Space...Entrepreneurs. Presumably, these astronauts are actually men who buy and sell quantities of the heavens.
  • SYRIA? - I mean honestly - SYRIA???
  • When in doubt, go toward the smoke. on approaching a riot during his 2007 visit to Islamabad, Pakistan. [3/15/2008 - Fargo, ND]
  • My feelings for you shame me into silence. The truth of this and your name will never be revealed. It is you who has made me realize the failure of my life. The thought of you fills me with longing and at the same time, a burning humiliation that produces scar tissue and dead brain cells. Your existence mocks me and I am unable to confront this. You have no idea of any of this. None of this is your fault. It is completely with me. It is you who makes me see what I really am. I am weak and out of touch with myself.
  • Somewhere someone is thinking of you. Someone is calling you an angel. This person is using celestial colors to paint your image. Someone is making you into a vision so beautiful that it can only live in the mind. Someone is thinking of the way your breath escapes your lips when you are touched. How your eyes close and your jaw tightens with concentration as you give pleasure a home. These thoughts are saving a life somewhere right now. In some airless apartment on a dark, urine stained, whore lined street, someone is calling out to you silently and you are answering without even being there. So crystalline. So pure. Such life saving power when you smile. You will never know how you have cauterized my wounds. So sad that we will never touch. How it hurts me to know that I will never be able to give you everything I have.
  • It is no surprise to me that hardly anyone tells the truth about how they feel. The smart ones keep themselves to themselves for good reason. Why would you want to tell anyone anything that's dear to you? Even when you like them and want nothing more than to be closer than close to them? It's so painful to be next to someone you feel strongly about and know you can't say the things you want to.

His Nietzesche quote is real & listed on Nietzesche's page, should it be linked to? Friedrich Nietzsche > Twilight of the Idols (1888) > Ohne Musik wäre das Leben ein Irrtum. [Without music, life would be a mistake.] Maxims and Arrows, 33.

  • I grew up in D.C....and I worked at this theater, and my manager was gay. He used to make me stand out by the ticket booth and any time someone who looked like Yul Brynner walked by I was supposed to bang on the glass. And he would come look. If the guy was hot, he'd make a face. If the guy was ugly, though, he's say 'Henrietta! What were you thinking?' Then one day he got fired and I didn't understand why. My friends were like, 'Because he's gay, Henry.' And I was like 'Yeah, and...?' I just didn't get it. And I got so angry then, and I felt the injustice, it's the same injustice that I'm feeling today.
    • Anecdote told at "WedRock" benefit concert for gay marriage equality.
  • ...And I was standing there screaming "Fuck" at the top of my lungs
    • Referring to a 1999 trip to the Via Dolorosa, regarding his amazement at seeing one of the last places where Jesus Christ was seen walking.
