English, Japanese, and Translation

edit

It might be better to have all three forms - the origional Japanese, the audio used in English, and the direct translations of Japanese to English, without alteration. I was suprised how different what the subtitles were (in English) from the two spoken languages... In some cases, the meaning is even arguably altered. However, this might take up too much space, or seem redundant on the page... Still, I think it's worth considering.

(I'm not entirely sure how this aspect of Wikipedia works... I'm rather new at this, so I apologise if I'm doing this incorrectly)

OVERDUB VERSION

edit

Are we putting what was actually said in the english dub version?
From:
Cloud Strife: Can sin be forgiven?
Vincent Valentine: ...I've never tried it.
Cloud Strife: [surprised] Tried it?
Cloud Strife: Tried it...
Cloud Strife: [to Marlene] Marlene, we're going home!
Cloud Strife: [to Vincent] I'll try it.
[he begins to walk away]
Cloud Strife: I'll let you know how it turns out.

change to:

Cloud Strife: Are sins ever forgiven?
Vincent Valentine: ...I've never tried.
Cloud Strife: [surprised] You mean. . . Never tried?
Cloud Strife: [to Marlene] Marlene, lets go!
Cloud Strife: [to Vincent] Well I'm gonna try it.
[he begins to walk away]
Cloud Strife: I'll phone in the verdict.

There's other places where what's shown here isn't what's on the dubbed version.

  • I'd rather it be from the English dub. Instead of this:
Yuffie: I don't get it at all! Explain it to me!
Cid: It's only between men.
Yuffie: Discrimination! Discrimination!

It would be...

Yuffie: I don't get it! Explain it to me!
Cid: This is man talk.
Yuffie: Sexist! Sexist!

Which sounds better? - 68.146.5.229 01:17, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • But contrary to how it may seem, translations of Japanese don't have to sound awkward. There are lines that are changed in the dub and lose some meaning in order to fit the mouthflaps, whereas a decent direct translation from the Japanese can preserve that. Most of the time it just says something about the translator's skill with English if the translation comes out sounding stilted. There are a few examples of that on this page, which could have the same meaning while sounding more natural, despite not being from the dub. --81.129.40.225 11:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, but there was no official sub version, was there? --70.38.103.59 04:55, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
