Tons of quotes edit

I added tons of quotes and the confirmed templates. We'll have to wait for the rest of the seasons to be released on dvd format in order to know which episodes fall under season 3 and onward. I am also following the guideline, not exceeding 10 quotes per episode as this is the wikiquote policy. - Zarbon 01:51, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikiquote policy is to avoid copyright violations. Keeping quotes down to 3-5 per episode is our usually quoted rule of thumb to attempt to do this, because there can be no formal number (except zero) to ensure no copyright violation. Zarbon mispresents Wikiquote policy here by treating an offhand comment about maximum quotes in rare circumstances (more often suggested as "8") as an acceptable level for a single person to add to each episode. Please read the detailed discussion "Example trimming: The New Threat" below for why a number like "10 quotes per episode" is far from acceptable. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:39, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Buu edit

I believe that the quotes on this page should be moved to the Dragon Ball Z page, and make the Buu page a redirect here. ~ UDScott 17:05, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Wiki-star: If they can be moved even better but we still need a section with only manga quotes! Go Scott! Go Scott! it's your birthday! it's your birthday! ... Wiki-star
Actually, I think you are right that these probably shouldn't just be merged into this page for the anime, but rather a page should be created for the manga, and then these Buu quotes can be moved there. ~ UDScott 17:28, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Wiki-star: Deliciously said! though i thought you understood that in the start. Wiki-star
Yes, I guess I misunderstood. My apologies. But I still feel that there shouldn't be a page just for Buu and instead there should be a page for the manga, perhaps with the Buu page redirecting there. ~ UDScott 17:31, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Seconded UDScott. --Aphaia 17:43, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Wiki-star: yes, you could copy/paste the stuff that's on Buu onto DBZ and then merge. How 'bout it? I don't have WP:OWN problems about it. Wiki-star

For the record, I removed from Buu "

  • Wiki-star: lol!". It is not appropriate to put into our website. If you think it worthy to note, please use other website instead. Here we consider this kind of innate remark as vandalism. Thanks --17:45, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Protection edit

The article page is protected due to edit war. For editors intereted, please have a constructive discussion here on the talk page. Thanks. --Aphaia 18:15, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • There is not much to add, other than the obvious fact that wiki-star is a major vandaliser, sockpuppeteer, and reverting menace. He has forced me to go through the same lengths on wikipedia in order to stop him from reverting and vandalising. As the sole cause of my being banned on wikipedia, for reverting and edit warring, I am more than obligated to warn the admins here of his menacing tactics. It's best to ban this threat now along with the ip address so further vandalism can be prevented. Anything that this vandaliser says should not be taken seriously. He has been following my activity and trying to have me banned for reverting his vandalisms. Just take a look at his user page and you will see that his goal is to "get revenge" as he has stated, by continuously and nonchalantly reverting and vandalising my contributions. - Zarbon 18:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay, this page is huge! Over 300 kb's?! edit

Time to cut it down to the true norm. Even I had trouble trying to remove the expired tag with all the loading and loading, etc. I do disagree with Zarbon's merging of Dragon Ball Z: Broly Second Coming, Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound & Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon, hence, I restored those articles. I mean, c'mon, 300 kb's?! This is like the largest article on the damn wikiquote. Dudes, the three I just named should get the quotes from here put onto them, each to their correct ones. I won't just copy/paste the quotes, I need y'all to work together on this or else there's a prob. Link 19:37, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

This page along with the sopranos page are my heart and soul. I've pretty much devoted hours to their creation, and bringing them to their highest potential, to the zenith of every notable and quote-worthy quote in the series. I've maintained not to cross ten quotes per episode. I've pretty much added all the quotes on the page except for the very few in the "unknown episodes" section. I will be adding all the rest up to the end of season eight as well, which is the final season. Everything will be included nice and neatly in one page. I am also not going to cross the ten-quote max for each episode so as not to break any consensus. If you have any other issues, please bring them up here before doing anything on the page itself. Also, bare in mind that it's normalcy to experience some lag if you have a connection slower than cable. About the movie articles, the reason why I rebounded the movies was that they should remain in the dbz context, same as db movies will be on the db page and the dbgt movies will be on the dbgt page. Also, I don't think there's any reason to have more than ten quotes, even for the movies, since I pretty much nitpicked very very carefully to nab all the best quotes from each and every one of the movies. There really aren't that many more better quotes to add for any of them...that's why I think it's pointless to reserve separate pages for the movies. It's only thirteen chapters longer than the original two hundred and ninety one that there will be in the long run. - Zarbon 00:35, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dude, first you ain't had to rearrange the header to your liking and you're acting like the page is yours. I'm trying to be proving my point across here. Wikiquote is not censored man. Don't know why you call it your "heart and soul" but it is waaayyy tooo bigggg. And yes I do have a connection slower than cable, therefore, a page this size can not pass. Don't use lag as an excuse and the "ten quotes rule" do not explain this case. Listen to what I said before: separate them into different articles. Wait, Dragonball was in sagas right? Separate them in sagas and movies into their own articles and keep the pages. I'll tell Poetic Decay to comment here yo. Link 14:00, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me, what's wrong the the article?! Sk8terhata

What do you mean? Besides the fact that it's too damn long. Link 14:45, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I meant why you wanna delete it? Sk8terhata
Delete it? Nah man, I do want to cut it down to a better and smaller size. Making each section (or saga rather) into its own page will decrease it from 300 to who knows? I'm aiming for at least the standard 32 kbs. Link 14:52, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well? Sk8terhata
No, why do you want to delete it? It is fine the way it is. Plus Zarbon put all his sweat and blood into it. Sk8terhata
Why am I getting the feeling you're Zarbon? Funny, you were just created and here you are talking to me? Link 14:58, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Respond!!! Sk8terhata
God, you take so damn long to answer! I'm not some guy named Zarbon, but I do like dbz! Sk8terhata
Calm down dude. I'm actually reading something else on Wikipedia while watching this page. Also it is more convenient to sign with 4 tildes other than type your name and wikify it. What is it you're not agreeing with? Link 15:05, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

As Link said, this page is far too long for its own good. That's why I started breaking up the movies into separate articles. We can't have every last Dragon Ball Z-related media on this page; they have to be split. As for the sagas, I'm not sure what to do with those at the moment. // DecaimientoPoético 16:34, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I am going to ignore the idiocy posted above by another of wiki-star's sockpuppets > sk8terhata. Now, I warned you not to remove the content from the page. There is going to be 291 episodes and they will all be on this page. The 13 movies do not need separate pages. If you want to give them their own, you can go ahead, but don't remove them from this page. Another reason why I don't want these links is because you transformed their names to Kuririn and Buruma and other japanese types. I don't want those names here. This is English wikiquote, and when I added all these quotes, I want them to remain in the English format. That's why I don't want those separate pages. If you want, you can have those separate pages, but don't take away from this page. Here, it will be all English names only. - Zarbon 17:07, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Unless you're talking about this page, I didn't "transform" the names; I added each characters English name, kanji, and romanji. And I still think the movies and other media need separate pages. It's only the most logical thing to do, when taking into consideration that the page we're currently arguing about, if you will, is almost 300 kilobytes and most computers simply can't handle that.
Also, it's pointless to have separate pages if you're still going to keep the content of this on this one. That's exactly why I made the separate pages with the same exact content as we used to have here and added links to each of those pages. // DecaimientoPoético 18:32, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Let me say this to clear things up, if you want the movies to have separate pages, you seriously need to remove the kanji, romanji, etc. I don't want those in the pages because this is english wikiquote. if you want that, post it in japanese wikiquote or something. When I add these contextual quotes, i want them in the english version. After all, none of the quotes from english version are exact duplications of the japanese quotes. And never in the english version is krillin called out as kuririn. That's what makes me angry. - Zarbon 20:06, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Really Zarbon, chill. I said we should have the movies in their own links and the sagas/arcs too should have their own pages. Nobody has to change any names because we're going by the popular dub by FUNi. Look, the only quotes going here are the ones from non-notable films, like the Bardock movie and ... I don't know. The first strike boxset can be in its own page too. Whatever truly keeps this page smaller is benefited. Link 20:21, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Try to remember that this site isn't censored. Why the fuck are you removing the curse word from the header? I'm trying to prove a point here dude. Damn straight, leave it alone. Link 21:40, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I particularly don't like curse words. People who look at these pages shouldn't read the word "fuck" all over the place. It's degrading. Especially a page related to dbz, which ranges from the age groups of 5-50. The fanbase is young as well, and to put words like that here is just not suitable. Also, I don't like the pages being split because of the romanji and kanji. And the separations of character quotes to dialogue quotes. They are all dialogue quotes. These minor separations are annoying and un-needed. If you can deal with the pages not being in those formats, then I don't have a problem with them being separate. - Zarbon 03:56, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
curse words offend me too. we should remove all curse words from this forum. Sk8terhata
get lost you vandal. Link, Poetic, please ignore his stupidity. - Zarbon 17:16, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
No offense Zarbon, but I hate you so much. you're always mean to people like me. just because I joined does not make me a sockpuppet. If you gonna call people names then uou might as well say Poetic and Link are sockpuppets, no offense you guys. Thats just an example, stop with the unsupported accusations like Jeffq said. If there's anyone stupid here its you, but I dont mean that as a verbel attack. I'm only 12 anyways, I still go to school and I am still learning English and some Spanish by my girlfriend. Leave me alone, please. Sk8terhata

Example trimming: The New Threat edit

In order to assist this article's editors in determining how to trim and reformat the material to follow Wikiquote guidelines on formatting and avoiding copyright violation, I have signficantly edited down "The New Threat". I've reduced the 10 quotes (including 2 scene transcriptions) to 3 concise quotes. I'm sure this will seem like a horror to DBZ fans, but it's important to note that Wikiquote is not a transcription service, providing detailed information and lengthy quotes not memorable outside the immediate fan community. It is intended to collect the most memorable words and phrases of people and creative works.

I'll list specific changes here to give you an idea of why I made them:

Trimming

  • Raditz vs. the farmer: While this might be a memorable scene, there are very few quotes that stand out. The only thing remotely arguable as a memorable phrase is the "What a fragile breed of people" line. The rest is merely relating the scene, which is only interesting if you can see it in your head, which the vast majority of Wikiquote readers cannot do. And frequently repeated phrases like "Your power level is X" are absolutely unmemorable, just like saying "Ah, I see you are 7 feet tall".
  • That hat! That's Gohan's...
So, do you have a name? I'm Gohan...
Mommy! Daddy! Help me!: All of these lines are basic conversation or exclamations. They are either incredibly mundane or totally unoriginal, so they make for poor quotes, even if they are essential scene elements.
  • Daddy? I lost my hat. […] Silly. No you didn't. It's on your head. Again, a cute scene. Its value is primarily visual, not textual, so it makes for a poor wiki-quote.
  • You actually managed to singe some of my leg hair. I deleted the stuff around this quote becuse it was a complete scene transcription, which is verboten for copyright reasons. Even if it weren't, it's mostly the same kind of ordinary "you think you can take me" — "you have no idea what you're up against" conflict dialog that only rabid fans of a show are going to be able to recall in 2 years. (In fact, based on my experience correcting similar fan-heavy quote articles, these kinds of "quotes" are so unmemorable in and of themselves that they are almost always badly misquoted. There are plenty of shows of which I'm a rabid fan that I've had to trim for the very same reason.)
  • It must be the largest power level on this planet. It's Kakarot.
I hit 'im full force and he didn't even flinch. This guy could be a problem. These kinds of quote are often included because they advance the plot. This is another common kind of quote that is of little use to Wikiquote. Quotes should not try to retell important parts of the story, any more than Wikipedia plot synopses should try to retell the whole thing. Again, it's the memorability of the words, not the scene, that matters.

The three remaining quotes are pithy essences from the episode that are at least arguably memorable and unique. The first two ("fragile breed", "singe some of my leg hair") are more traditional quotes, while the last one ("Have you forgotten your pride, Kakarot?") is a short speech which may be representative of the character in a way that stands out for the series. (I don't know myself.)

Episodes should try to include no more than 3-5 quotes. (Rare exceptions of up to 8 might be made for special episodes, but it should be understood that rare means very few times, and that this is not an average. In other words, you can't say 10 episode have only 2 quote each to justify including 30 quotes or more in another episode. Each episode is a separate copyrighted work.) There is no requirement that each episode include at least one quote. Some episodes may offer nothing that really stands out. The goal is to select the very most funny or moving turns of phrase that can be found in the work.

Formatting

General formatting details can be found at Firefly (TV series)/Format, one of several article subpages that lists formal formatting practices. (Unfortunately, we still haven't gotten around to creating a single generic page with all this information.) Two quick changes to make, based on what I found in this episode:

  • Context information, like "Piccolo blasts Raditz ineffectively", should NOT be included in the quote lines. With very rare exceptions, anything following the quotee name should be exactly what they say. (Read the Format page I mentioned for an explanation why.) Instead, if it is essential to identify the scene within the show or to explain what is being discussed, it should be a complete sentence that goes in a separate line, indented like the quote lines, italicized, and placed within "square" brackets, like so:
    [Piccolo blasts Raditz ineffectively.]
  • The very rare situations when you need "stage directions" (like [to himself]) should be no more than 1-3 words typically, and not sentences. In other words, they should stay as much as possible out of the way of the quote's words. Sound effects and head motions (like [nods]) are almost never needed; delete them on sight. Anything more than a couple of words is almost always a context line that should be either deleted outright (preferred) or at least moved into a separate line as discussed above. Always remember that it's the quote's words that are important, not the setting, the scene, the sounds, the music, the pictures, or anything non-textual.

See the Format subpage for more details.

Cooperation

Editors must also always keep in mind that nobody owns or controls the article, and that many different people will have many different ideas of what are the best quotes. In general, I try not to add more than 1 or 2 quotes to any TV-show episode myself, so that others have "room" to add their own favorites. If the number of quotes for any episode gets too high, it is a good rule of thumb to stop adding any quotes unless you are prepared to delete one for every one you add. This will force you to be properly selective. Any disagreements, of course, should be discussed on this talk page.

I hope this example will inspire editors to continue the work of weeding and reformatting this article in order to avoid having it tagged for copyright violation or even summarily deleted. If copyvios aren't handled in a timely manner, Wikimedia Foundation members may delete most or all of the article, or other Wikiquotians can replace its content with a {{copyvio}} tag, forcing a compete rewrite. Don't let this happen! ~ Jeff Q (talk) 05:57, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good, I will add much more quotes in a few weeks. Do not delete it Wikistar. You may be watching my contribututions but you know we had a deal. You break it, and I will make sure you never get a good nights sleep. Uglyguy2006 15:06, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Seasonal Breakdown of Page edit

In response to UDScott and BD2412 tagging the page, I will gradually and eventually break down the page into seasonal pages. The same was done to "The Simpsons" pages, eventually leading to seasonal breakdowns. This will allow for the copyvio to no longer exist and trimming will not be required as all the episodes will be limited to seasonal pages. Zarbon 14:20, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Major Trim edit

Other than the apparent seasonal breakdown in order to create a better, easier, and more accessible resource, I have also began trimming the pages to more than half the amount. Whereas some episodes had 10-15 quotes as I had added them all prior, I will keep most of the most memorable quotes and remove the rest, so as not to cross 5 quotes per episode and avoid a copyvio. I should be done with the trim process soon, and all the episodes should have 5 quotations maximum when I am done with the trimming as opposed to 10-15 as I had added before. Zarbon 19:57, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

What about the Ocean episodes? edit

I noticed that the Saiyan and Namek Sagas are going by the FUNimation redub instead of the original, Ocean version. Shouldn't those be included too? Like, a different section or even an entirely different page? Cause I'm sure MOST of us knew and liked the Ocean version, no matter how good the FUNimation redub is it still won't replace the Ocean dub of the first 53 episodes (Arrival of Raditz, the World's Strongest Team, Goku... Super Saiyan?, etc.) 24.65.118.20 02:46, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Since the Ocean episodes are entirely different, not only by dialogue but also based on their actual episode titles, the best bet is to have them separately if they most definitely need to be used (53 episodes)...but I'd avoid it myself and will not be doing that because the Funimation dub primarily dubbed the entire series and I'm only including all the most recent and most accurate translations. Many of the Ocean dub translations and dialogue were inaccurate compared to the original Japanese audio, if anything. So they can't be incorporated into the Funimation dub because they are a different dub entirely. The best bet would be to include them on a separate page, but I wouldn't recommend it as it would be very limited. - Zarbon 21:14, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
i am inclined to agree. Lets cut through the ol' crap cake herre and stick with the Funimation dubbing! They didnt change that much from the newer uncut edition but DBZ Kai, now thats another story! Wait a shit, u must be utilizing the uncut version so yes, let us avoid the campy Ocean dub altogether. I might take it upon myself to make Kai but, nah, it will be a hassle. 166.147.123.32

I have to say something edit

It is about time that we broke this page into sagas or watever ya call it. Wen I was anonymous editor I could touch this but (full) protection was applied. I would like to re-organize the links to alphabetical order if posible, but bottom line, if things will keep to this manner then never mind. i am going to probably make a "Battle of Z", however , some suggestion would be nice first. Thanks for taking it upon urselves for separating the various movies. I will maintain the quotes in the fashion they're currently in.
