Clark did not say "The trouble with Michael [Heseltine] is that he had to buy his own furniture". Michael Jopling said it. Clark only recorded the remark in his diary.

However, someone who thought Clark said it once responded, "that's a bit rich coming from someone whose father had to buy his own castle". (referring to Saltwood Castle and Kenneth Clark, Lord Clark of Civilisation)
