Song lyrics
editAll lyrics by Dennis DeYoung, except as noted.
- Lady, when you're with me I'm smiling.
Give me all your love.
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking;
Touch me and my troubles all fade.
Lady, from the moment I saw you
Standing all alone,
You gave all the love that I needed.
So shy, like a child who has grown.'Cause you're my lady of the morning;
Love shines in your eyes.
Sparkling, clear, and lovely,
You're my lady.
- When I think of Lorelei, my head turns all around.
As gentle as a butterfly, she moves without a sound.
I call her on the telephone, she says be there by eight.
Tonight's the night she's moving in and I can hardly wait.- Lorelai, written by Dennis DeYoung and James Young.
- Time after time I sit and I wait for your call.
I know I'm a fool but why can I say.
Whatever the price I'll pay for you, Madame Blue.
Once long ago, a word from your lips and the world turned around.
But somehow you've changed, you're so far away.
I long for the past and dream of the days with you, Madame Blue.
Crystal Ball (1976)
edit- Where do you go at the end of the day?
Where do you go, when you spend time away?
To islands in the tropic sands?
Or pleasure trips to distant lands?
You're searching for a dream.
Well maybe it's me.- Mademoiselle, written by Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw.
- I used to like to walk the straight and narrow line.
I used to think that everything was fine.
Sometimes I'd like to sit and gaze for days through sleepless dreams
All alone and trapped in time.
All alone and trapped in time.- Crystal Ball, written by Tommy Shaw.
The Grand Illusion (1977)
edit- Welcome to the Grand Illusion;
Come on in and see what's happening.
Pay the price, get your tickets for the show.
The stage is set, the band starts playing;
Suddenly your heart is pounding,
Wishing secretly you were a star.
- So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because you never win the game,
Just remember that it's a Grand Illusion
And deep inside we're all the same.
We're all the same…- The Grand Illusion
- And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it.
You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it.
How can you be such an angry young man?
When your future looks quite bright to me.
How can there be such a sinister plan
That could hide such a lamb, such a caring young man.- Fooling Yourself, written by Tommy Shaw
- I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea.
I've got to be free, free to face the life that's ahead of me.
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard.
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore.
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try to carry on.
- I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad.
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had.
We live happily forever, so the story goes.
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold.
But we'll try best that we can to carry on.- Come Sail Away
- Well are you really who we think you are?
Or does that smile seem to wear you down?
This girl who you once were is screaming jump out.
This dream that you must live—a disease for which there is no cure.
This roller coaster ride you're on won't stop to let you off.- Miss America, written by James Young
Pieces of Eight (1978)
edit- Sing for the day;
Sing for the moment;
Sing for the time of your life.
Come for an hour;
Stay for a moment;
Stay for the rest of your life.- Sing for the Day, written by Tommy Shaw
- Give me a job, give me security;
Give me a chance to survive.
I'm just a poor soul in the unemployment line;
My God, I'm hardly alive.My mother and father, my wife and my friends,
You see them laugh in my face.
But I've got the power and I've got the will;
I'm not a charity case.- Blue Collar Man, written by Tommy Shaw
- Oh mama, I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law.
Lawman has put an end to my running and I'm so far from my home.
Oh mama, I can hear your crying; you're so scared and all alone.
Hangman is coming down from the gallows and I don't have very long.- Renegade, written by Tommy Shaw
Cornerstone (1979)
edit- Hard times come, hard times go,
And in between you hope and pray.
The scars don't show
'Cause life is strange and so unsure.
The days you hardly make it throug,
You swear that there's a curse on you.
'Cause nothing seems to fi
And things won't go your way.
You know you've had enough,
You've got the right to say
Why me, why me?
- Babe, I'm leaving, I must be on my way;
The time is drawing near.
My train is going, I see it in your eyes;
The love, the need, your tears.
But I'll be lonely without you.
And I'll need your love to see me through.
Please believe me, my heart is in your hands
And I'll be missing you.You know it's you, Babe,
Whenever I get weary and I've had enough,
Feel like giving up.
You know it's you, Babe,
Giving me the courage and the strength I need.
Please believe that it's true.
Babe, I love you.
- Oh the river is deep;
The river it touches my life like the waves on the sand.
And all roads lead to Tranquillity Base
Where the frown on my face disappears.
Take me back to my boat on the river
And I won't cry out anymore.- Boat on the River, written by Tommy Shaw
- I'm so confused by the things I read, I need the truth.
But the truth is, I don't know who to believe.
The left say yes, and the right says no.
I'm in between and the more I learn,
Well, the less that I know.- Borrowed Time, written by Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw
Paradise Theatre (1981)
edit- Whatcha doin' tonight, I got faith in our generation.
Let's stick together and futurise our attitudes.
I ain't lookin' to fight, but I know with determination
We can challenge the schemers who cheat all the rules.- Rockin' the Paradise, written by Dennis DeYoung, James Young, and Tommy Shaw
- Is it any wonder I'm not crazy? Is it any wonder I'm sane at all?
Well, I'm so tired of losing; I got nothing to do and all day to do it.
I go out cruisin' but I've no place to go and all night to get there.
Is it any wonder I'm not a criminal?
Is it any wonder I'm not in jail?
Is it any wonder I've gotToo much time on my hands, it's ticking away with my sanity.
I've got too much time on my hands, it's hard to believe such a calamity.
I've got too much time on my hands and it's ticking away from me.
Too much time on my hands, too much time on my hands.- Too Much Time on My Hands, written by Tommy Shaw
- 'Cause, nothing ever goes as planned.
It's a hell of a notion,
Even Pharaohs turn to sand.
Like a drop in the ocean,
You're so together and you act so civilised.
But every time that things go wrong you're still surprised.
You've done your duty, you've paid a fortune in dues.
Still got those Mother Nature's Blues.
- Tonight's the night we'll make history, honey, you and I.
And I'll take any risk to tie back the hands of time.
And stay with you here tonight.
I know you feel these are the worst of times.
I do believe it's true.
When people lock their doors and hide inside,
Rumor has it it's the end of Paradise.
But I know, if the world just passed us by,
Baby, I know, you wouldn't have to cry.
- The best of times are when I'm alone with you.
Some rain some shine, we'll make this a world for two.
Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime.
We'll take the best, forget the rest
And someday we'll find these are the best of times.
These are the best of times.- The Best of Times
- Mirror, mirror on the wall
The face you've shown me scares me so.
I thought that I could call your bluff,
But now the lines are clear enough.
Life's not pretty even though
I've tried so hard to make it so.
Mornings are such cold distress,
How did I ever get into this mess?I'm snowblind, can't live without you.
So fine I just can't get away.
Now I'm snowblind, snowblind, snowblind.- Snowblind, written by Dennis DeYoung and James Young
Kilroy Was Here (1983)
edit- Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo.
- The problem's plain to see: too much technology.
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanise.The time has come at last
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
To throw away this mask.
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
So everyone can see
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
My true identity…
I'm Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy!- Mr. Roboto
- I flip the switch on my laser video
And there's the man staring back at me.
He starts to speak in a voice so righteous
About the sins of society.He's got answers to all my problems,
Says he'll decide what I should hear and see.
I try to change to another station,
But all I get is more of his morality.
Edge of the Century (1990)
edit- Every night I say a prayer
In the hopes that there's a Heaven.
And everyday I'm more confused
As the saints turn into sinners.All the heroes and legends
I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay.
And I feel this empty place inside,
So afraid that I've lost my faith.Show me the way, show me the way.
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away.
Please show me the way.
Return to Paradise (1997)
edit- Cause paradise is any place where I can be with you
And leave behind the sorrow and the pain that I've been through.
Safe in your arms,
Safe from the world tonight.
For you are my paradise.
