Samarkand Al-Jabri (1973) is an Iraqi poet, short story writer, and visual artist. She was born in Baghdad and graduated from the College of Fine Arts in 1998. She has written poetry since the 1980s and published under a pseudonym until 1996. In 2008, she won the first prize in the Sharjah Award for Arab Creativity for her short story collection “Two Little Bears.”

I am a clear Iraqi human voice that holds good news. I write poetry about home and Iraqi women who concerns of childhood and the suffering of the Iraqi people in particular. In addition, my writings about the creative Iraqi woman wherever she is, even if she is at home, she remains creative.
[When you attend literary events outside your homeland, how do you observe the presence of the Iraqi writer, educative, and poet?] In the homeland, there is a broken heart, and outside the situation is worse without a solution. Inside this broken heart rooted creativity within the Iraqi creator that s/he carries with her/him like the fingerprint because s/he fully believes that glory does not belong to the poet but to the poem. The educated Iraqi feels his responsibility wherever s/he goes, so he is in a crisis, never resting and does not disavow Iraq, or rejoice it, because of the greatness of her/his homeland.

أنا صوت إنساني عراقي واضح مبشِّر بالخير. أكتب الشعر عن الوطن وعن المرأة العراقية وما تحمله من هموم الطفولة ومعاناة الإنسان العراقي تحديداً، إضافة إلى كتاباتي عن المرأة العراقية المبدعة أينما حلّت، حتى لو تقوقعت داخل منزلها، تبقى مبدعة.
[من خلال حضورك فاعليات أدبية خارج حدود وطنك، كيف تنظرين إلى وجود الأديب والمثقّف والشاعر العراقي هناك؟] في الوطن جرح عميق، وخارجه جرح أعمق لا يلتئم، بل ينزف الدماء دائماً ومعها أيضاً الإبداع المتأصّل داخل المبدع العراقي يحمله معه كبصمة يده أينما ذهب، لأنه مؤمن تماماً بأن المجد ليس للشاعر بل للقصيدة. يشعر المثقف العراقي بمسؤوليته أينما ذهب، لذلك هو مأزوم لا يرتاح أبداً ولا يتنصّل من العراق بل يفرح عندما يتألم له لأنه بذلك يؤكد عظمة وطنه.
