Sahitya Akademi

India's National Academy of Letters

Sahitya Akademi (established in 1955) is the apex institution in India for the preservation and promotion of Indian languages and literature. It confers annual awards for the most outstanding works of Indian literature. Despite receiving Government grants its management had been largely independent of Government control during its initial decades.
