Richard Gifford

British writer

Richard Gifford (17251807), poet, was educated at Oxford University, and the author of the poem, Contemplation. He also wrote theological and controversial works as well.


  • Verse sweetens toil, however rude the sound;
    She feels no biting pang the while she sings;
    Nor, as she turns the giddy wheel around,
    Revolves the sad vicissitudes of things.
